I grew up on food stamps and free school lunches. I remember going to food pantries and walking out with peanut butter and shelf-stable cheese in stark white containers with black lettering.

I didn't always like what we had to eat (I hated peanut butter!), but I was lucky enough to never go hungry.

in reply to Aleen

The Trump administration's refusal to pay SNAP benefits is galling to me on a very personal level.

I can't change their minds. I don't have billions of dollars to give to people who need help. But I can do some good. Will you join me in donating to your local food pantry?

If you want to tell me how much you've donated, J and I will contribute that amount to United Food Bank (up to $1000). We're matching $200 in donations so far!

in reply to Aleen

Don't live in the US? Donate to your local food pantry anyway! I'm sure they can use the help no matter where you are.

Everyone deserves to eat.

in reply to Aleen

We sent $50 to our local, the Nazareth Area Food Bank, this morning.

"The founder of a startup business that helps employers and parents with parental leave is asking whether it's fair that parents are taxed as individuals.

Stephanie Pow said she regularly helped parents navigate their entitlements, including Working for Families and Family Boost.

All of these supports are assessed on the basis of household income.

But when it came to tax, that is applied on an individual basis."

Benefits should be individual too.

in reply to Strypey

Either option would be better than the status quo for households like mine with a disabled adult unable to work. Not that NZ classifies ME/CFS as a disability, but that's another story.

@tim
> Either option would be better than the status quo for households

Cool. So consider the situation of a solo Dad who starts dating someone with a job. WINZ gets wind of this, declares they're now "in a relationship", and means tests his benefit entitlements against her income and assets.

Now he either has to break up with a woman he may have only just started seeing, or depend on her to support him and her kids. She has an equally stark choice.

Individual entitlements are the way.

#Klimaschutz ist keine politische Ideologie!
@_FriedrichMerz @Markus_Soeder und Konsorten

Categorical Imperative reshared this.

in reply to Hart

Stell Dir vor, die Klimaleugner hätten recht. Was dann? Dann hätten wir saubere Städte, klare Luft und sauberes Wasser.... Daher ist es keine politische Meinung. Sondern vernünftig.

There's something that didn't really crystallise for me for a long time, which I think I might have learned from Bob Harper implicitly, not sure.

If you like someone's research and want to emulate it, it is more important to read the things that they had *read* than to read the things that they had *written*.

Obviously you should read it all, but I often run into people who are banging their heads against something I wrote when I was just a beginner in a topic trying to understand it myself, and they would be a lot better off reading whatever I had been reading at the time. (A good way to figure out what someone had been reading is to look at the bibliography in their paper or note!)

@graydon @slava Graydon, you're probably the person I know who is best at doing this stuff from outside academia. Researchers have to spend lots of time creating and maintaining this metadata, whether in our heads or actually written down like you describe. The metadata makes it possible to (relatively) quickly understand where new knowledge fits in. But it's also a lot of overhead to maintain. I sometimes envy people who have a lower-overhead way of engaging with papers than I do!

@lindsey @slava The times I've really tried to map an area for my own interest relied very heavily on tools! Google scholar, semantic scholar, etc.

Lately I'm really enjoying inciteful.xyz -- for any given citation graph it also shows a bunch of canned derived queries: prominent authors, journals and institutions, most-cited survey papers that cover the most of the graph, key papers and recent papers, etc. etc.

I tried watching the new DMV show and I wasn't really into it.

I'm guessing that @sundogplanets is not going to be too pleased with this one-sided #BBC article which breathlessly parrots the boosterism for 40+ paragraphs before timidly suggesting that "Some, however, do not agree".

I once remember the BBC being better than this.

I'm weirdly resigned to the US having a major financial meltdown—stock market crash, bank runs, liquidity crisis, AI bubble pop, maybe all that&more!

If not now, in the middle of the shutdown & Trump-caused hunger crisis, then soon.

I can't see us destroying fascism before they crash...everything.

in reply to Sue is Writing Solarpunk 🌞🌱

I'm ready to #FAFO on that. The current shutdown is good training -- we're going to have to support each other during the meltdown.

More Occupy. Less Tea Party racism.

@CheapPontoon

I agree that all of this is good "training"—the word I would use is "opportunity"

Use the SNAP cutoff to lay the foundation of connection between neighbors, building community, building social agreement about feeding everyone.

We'll need that consensus when we have people in power who will implement universal right to food (because of public demand).

Many of the mutual aid networks deployed rn were built off the early part of the pandemic.

I've been saying this from the jump:

Zelensky confirms a Russian bomb strike on Sloviansk TPP just hours ago. Two people were killed, others wounded. “This is pure terror, normal forces don’t fight like this.” He noted energy support agreements with Norway, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and ongoing talks with the G7 to secure vital power infrastructure.

I'm thinking about changing how the "Reveal" system works in #TiledWords and I could use your feedback!

Currently:

- You get 3 reveals per puzzle
- Clicking the (?) next to a clue reveals the entire word

This is useful as an escape hatch but is "all or nothing" and not very fun.

I'm considering increasing the number of reveals (to 4 or 5) but making them less powerful. Here are a couple of options:

1. A reveal exposes the first and last letter. Revealing the same word a second time exposes the whole word.
2. A reveal exposes every other letter. (Second reveal shows everything.)

What do y'all think? How should reveals work? Thanks!
