Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer is under investigation after having been caught using taxpayer money for personal reasons, including a birthday party “renamed” in order to avoid greater scrutiny about using public funds. trib.al/NVZZUXp

This makes a whole lot of sense. Who the heck wants to work in a nation where delivering healthcare is constantly subject to laws deliberately designed to harm women and children? Or just people in general

Draco
A #poetry thread

i.

In the great wyrm’s house
with sable drapes
and eaves with spouts
in dragonlike shapes,

I stood to face
the beast within —
where heart had raced
from his rage-winds.

The chamberlain
who greets me there
with pale lips, thin.
In master’s lair

he drags me towards
the waiting wyrm,
whose towering hoard
of skulls that squirm

People who have never had to rent as an adult will never understand the privileges of homeownership. And it's a fucking problem. Let's discuss.

Everything below represents a stressor that renters have that homeowners just don't.

I have a 15 day grace period to pay the mortgage. That means less stress getting the payment in on time. I cannot stress enough how relieving that is.

I can just fix stuff myself if I want to. If I hate my faucet, I can just replace it with one that's high enough - too many never renters do not understand how shitty kitchen faucets are in most apartments. They are chosen for price and not utility. This is an often unrecognized stressor. It's harder to watch dishes when your faucet is too low.

I can buy stuff in bulk because I have a place to store shit. Buying bulk is cheaper. I don't have to think about how many rolls of toilet paper I have left nearly as often.

I have enough space to work on loud or messy projects. You can't build a workshop in an apartment.

I never have to worry about someone buying my home and forcing me to find alternative lodging. The relief from this is palpable - this is such a huge and often invisible stressor. It's an elephant sized stressor. Moving is expensive.

I can have multiple pets, and specifically more than two. My pets are not restricted by weight or breed.

Berlin has agreed to host Israel's aircraft, the 'Wing of Zion,' amid escalating Iranian retaliatory attacks across Israel.

The Boeing 767, used to transport war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu, was flown to Berlin and parked at the airport as a precautionary security measure.

Vous me conseillez quoi ???

there's this quote "a society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in" that shows up verbatim lots of places cited as a Greek proverb, but the degree to which it is quoted verbatim makes me think there might be a more recent source that's not being attributed properly. regardless of its origin, i like the philosophy: build a better future together little by little doing the things you can today

Oblomov reshared this.

in reply to aeva

i think this is one of the reasons i find programming as a profession to be frustrating at times, because so much of what people make ends up being ephemera. people are constantly planting seeds, and then digging up seeds to replace them with more fashionable seeds. the only shade is the shade thrown at the people who had the gall to plant those earlier seeds. meanwhile the next generation of seed planters are lining up for the same plot

Oblomov reshared this.

Bonus points for me being the planter and destroyer of the same seeds.

Decades ago I built a CMS to generate websites from a database. My employer liked it, and saw commercial promise. A few weeks after our first commercial success we pivoted to a CMS built by a third party. I spent the next decade implementing website and document management systems, as well as content editor workflows using that, until a little-known competitor started getting fashionable: Wordpress. So the company pivoted to that and I was out of a job...
in reply to aeva

given the copy-ability of software, it seems like we should be able to build durable shared components and refine them over time. and some stuff is like that? but so much is sweaty, competitive jostling for attention. I blame all the money
in reply to elseweather

@elseweather yeah that sort of thing. the things that actually seem to last all seem to have a lot of popularity and finalized interfaces (at least in their original incarnations). eg, the C ABI, retro console rom hacking, doom, Win32, and so on.

if you build something on just that, the odds of your creation surviving and maybe being of benefit to someone some distant day are a lot higher than if you build it entirely out of whatever is the current passing fad

in reply to aeva

@elseweather when people come in sneering about "legacy software" and rally support to tear it all down and replace it with some big shiny new thing (which they'll design of course) we lose that foundation and everything built upon it.
in reply to Stuart Celarier

@VisualStuart I think it is safe to say that people are going to be making new doom maps so long as there continues to be computers to run them with

I have been at my current job almost fifteen years and have never done anything but technical migrations.

They just moved me off of one tech migration project and reassigned me to a different tech migration project.

in reply to aeva

Software is very mailable and the possible solution space for a problem is larger than other engineering professions. Combine this with smart and bored programmers and you get a tendency to reinvent the wheel.

It seems to me that, broadly speaking, every generation before left the world better than the one before it. Until now. This generation will lea e the world far worse, potentially irrevocably, than it found it.

It is leaving the dishes in the sink, figuring your flatmate will wash them, but planetary scale. With death instead of dishes.

Another place I want to visit on my trip to New Mexico is called Aztec Ruins - named that before white folks realized the ancestral Puebloans were a very different civilization.

It's huge, with ~450 rooms, some 3 stories high! People lived here from about 1050 to 1200 CE.

One thing that I will say is that whenever transphobic people talk about all the experiences I will never have and how I'll never know what it's like to have certain bodily functions, I legit feel devastated. I was devastated when it clicked for me the first time. It's just grief that I was born with, really.

I legit spent a good hour yesterday sobbing over it.

I didn't have a choice in the matter. I'm personally just trying to hold onto my victories wherever possible because otherwise I'll just be a crying mess.

I would urge all the cisgender women to put themselves in my shoes. Imagine that your personality, your mind was the same as it is now, but you were born as a boy and forced to fulfill that role.

What would you do?

in reply to Jackie

It is a very superficial and insulting reading to assume that I am not going through things that other women go through.

I might not be able to understand some very specific things, but there are many things that I understand very very well and are in fact unavoidable.

And there is suffering that I go through, that you will never be able to understand.
