in reply to David Revoy • • •@faoluin even bot comments aside, just the other day Evan Dahm was posting on bsky about how he was suddenly getting this big influx of really shitty (all cusses in this post are mine) comments on Meta platforms for a recent update to his serial - just lots of people who
(a) are not shown *anything* from the comic, following or not, because of arbitrary algo bullshit, until all of a sudden they are
(b) thereby have no context whatsoever about what they're looking at
(c) but nonetheless feel completely entitled to make judgment about the thing without taking any effort to seek out that obviously missing context that had not been spoonfed to them
it's pretty demoralizing all around and it just further validates my decision never to go near any Meta product again

in reply to David Revoy • • •Don't be too harsh. That's exactly what metas platforms are designed to do: Keep you scrolling for as long as possible. And the "best" (well, for them) way to do that is using negative emotions.

they depict fine details.
The way I can tell that your art isn't AI is how closely the mood of the characters matches the dialog. AI can't seem to really understand that people look at people, and isn't very good at subtle emotions displayed through facial expressions and body language.
Of course, in another year that could change ...

It's happening to lots of writers. Some forums are nothing but people claiming they put writing through an "AI detector" and the writing is obviously AI. It's soul-crushing, as you well know.
The other major group of people getting hit by this, ironically, are computer programmers. People who actually know how to code are being told their code is AI generated even when it's absolutely obvious it's not.
Anyone who creates is damaged by AI - even if they don't use it.

Even taking the personal views aside, after checking through some online AI detectors (AI's themselves mostly! Oh the irony!) I still scored high on the AI Gen score.
This was a slightly tongue in cheek response to that. But as stated above I'm in the unfortunate position where my normal writing voice sounds like something ChatGPT would spew out 🙁

Certainly, I'm often browsing sciency vids, and if the vid is made within the last few days, I will *always* check in the commenty bit to see if they've fessed up to AI. If it obviously is, but not fessed up to, then I'll flag it.
I've said before, doing auto-gen on voice-overs for vids is OK, as it helps accessibility, but if the visuals or narrative are AI-gen, they get insta-blocked.

I think this must be a 'user' thing, people assume you use Facebook, or other big tech social media, we can tell this as there is very little option to 'share on fediverse' for example.
Another example is the media talk about people who are apparently super famous usually either influencers or reality TV stars that no one out side of those circles of influence have even heard of.

GenAI is lazy and ruining our livelihoods - I stopped creating my watercolours because I thought what is the point? I am feeding a machine without payment, I am not getitng royalties for the folks who created stuff on Midjourney and Stable Diffusion trained off my landscapes.
And it does matter how it's created. If it's created by stealing all our work - and yes my work like David's is in the training models, then it's bad and parasitic.

in reply to David Revoy • • •This post is so sad.
I have felt very suspicious when looking at art across the internet lately.
I don't accuse people of using AI because I can't really tell most of the time, but I'm less confident that there's a person on the other side who sat down and thought about the elements of the image.
That's what it feels like from my end anyways.
Toon Link
in reply to David Revoy • • •Man... You know, the really, really bizarre ones to me aren't the ones that, like, accuse you of using AI, despite you having literal decades of documentation and video proof of your hand.
It's the ones that accuse you of deliberately using an AI style, as if you're trying to trick them into thinking it's AI?
I wonder if some people just genuinely can't tell the difference between corporatized AI "style" and a soft, stylized cartoon with warm colors and a painterly texture.
David Revoy
in reply to Toon Link • • •So I feel torn: I don't know if I should adapt, shift and bend my style until it's no longer "identified as AI", or if I should abandon the aesthetic that's such a big part of me (if only I can?). I'll think a lot about it while painting on the next weeks. I'll also take a little bit of holidays in August, I think it is the right time for it.
wizzwizz4
in reply to David Revoy • • •@ToonLink This, too, will pass. Internet commenters have always been Like This™; it is wise not to heed them so much.
I'm a fairly prolific internet commenter, but many of these people spend entirely too much time writing posts online, and not enough trying to understand the world. Their opinions are superficial, and widely disseminated.
When they make specific criticisms, saying this or that feature "looks AI", that's most likely a post-hoc rationalisation of their gut instincts.
Toon Link
in reply to David Revoy • • •I don't think changing the style would change anything. I honestly don't think your style looks like AI (or at least not the AI I've seen), and you might end up chasing dragons for something that won't stop the accusations anyway.
It's just... so strange. I think that, since those kind of places are so full of AI, people are extra vigilant. It stops being a reality check and starts being a defense against "falling for it", to the point that people want to see AI that isn't there.
Toon Link
in reply to Toon Link • • •Obviously I'm not going to make demands. 😆 And I will support you in any decisions you make. I like your art because it comes from you, not because it looks a certain way (and definitely take some time off!)
But I think it's more important to live authentically, than to worry about if other people think you're "doing it right". I know that's different when you're worried about a career, but industry peeps have a different perspective from randos who might just want to shitstir.
David Revoy
in reply to Toon Link • • •Toon Link
in reply to David Revoy • • •Foxfire
in reply to David Revoy • • •I want to reframe this in a way that may help with making the decision. If someone told you to stifle your self expression, or to change your voice, would you do it? Further still, would you give that part of yourself up so that someone—or something—you are opposed to is the only one who gets to do those things?
I am by no means popular, but I am a creative. Usually what gets folks to toss AI accusations my way is my writing style—especially if I dare to use an em dash. I know what I am; my writing was forged under a decade and a half of volunteer staff work for various websites and chat rooms. My prose became very formal, concise, and tactful over time. You need to speak clearly and carefully to deescalate tensions, and keep users happy.
My lived experience is in my voice, as it surely is in yours. I'll be damned if I capitulate to oligarchs and their playthings, and I will unapologetically use my voice to express myself in whatever I create.
Despite everything, keep being you.

I'm at a point where I almost don't want to write anymore, let alone publish it. It has always been my passion and seriously helped me work through trauma. And now it's all but gone, at least the creative work. Not once in my life have I used generative AI and it still has a massive impact on me.
Marcus Olang' wrote a good piece about it.

There was a great exchange in the original aliens movie between Vazquez and one of the guys. She’s doing chin ups and the guy says “have you ever been mistaken for a man?
She replies, “ no. Have you?”

It's why we have to be very opposed to it and make sure to let people know when no ai slop is used. Welcome to the future that techbros want.

AI-accusation now is just another way of dehumanising artists, but also with distinctive cluster of targets: the non-Westerners, the non-whites, the non native English speakers who are already dehumanised by the dominant culture are now having yet another low effort weapon against them, and somehow the burden of proof is on the accused. If you could run AI locally on your machine and train it with your own material, I think it would be up to you if you wanted to/what you’d do with it.
But they took that choice away.

If anything it will become more a case of trust. I know your art from here, and I trust that you wouldn’t knowingly post someone else who isn’t at least reasonably trustworthy.
Basically human connections need to get more important in general. Especially with all the propaganda bots.

Since then I've learned that AI has been taught on my published writing, and also trained off my art portfolio so likely scraped the 100,000s of words there.
So the thing is, I'm not copying AI, it's likely AI is copying me.

But when everything is consumed in random snapshots served by an algorithm, most of the audience doesn't see artists' trajectories, and most horrifyingly, seem to forget that such a thing exists. All media exists in an endless state of "right now".

I find that the people making accusations usually just have a feeling, and then pile on the confirmation bias as they search for reasons in the art itself to justify their feeling.
Keep doing what you do. It's invaluable. Even if there are those who can't be bothered to do the research, having real art made by real artists is so important right now.

Similarly, I saw a post here in the Fediverse last night about how 1,000s of people had accused a genuine Monet painting of being AI "slop".
So, the answer to the question is that it's going to be a witch hunt.
I'm an engineer of half a century's standing. I consider so-called "AI" to be a mania that will end in a crash without precedent. However, witch hunts, hue and cry, this does nobody any good.

Maintenant les gens font pareil avec l'IA, ils s'inventent AIologues pour s'autocongratuler de ne pas se faire avoir même quand ce n'est pas le cas. C'est presque aussi fatiguant que l'IA en fait.

Originally when I saw your art, it took me a second to recognize that your style was something I'd seen *replicated* by AI "art" models, and not that your work was just that style because it was AI. (though of course even a moment of closer inspection revealed it wasn't slop)
I try to avoid identifying AI art solely by general style or vibe for exactly that reason.
