The Pirate Party of Russia Joins the Support for the United Nations Open Source Principles

Recently, the Digital Technology Network (DTN) of the UN Board of Directors adopted 8 Open Source Principles. The Pirate Party of Russia, since its inception, has advocated for openness—including open source—and international integration. Therefore, we have decided to join this important initiative, which positively impacts the development of all humanity in a broad sense.

In our decision-making, we adhere to the principles of direct electronic democracy and meta-politics. At our Congress—a body of direct governance consisting of all party members—81% voted in favor of joining this initiative.

The UN Open Source Principles consist of eight guiding principles that provide a framework for using, developing, and distributing open-source software across the entire organization:

  • Open by default: Making open-source the default approach in projects.
  • Contribution: Encouraging active participation in the open-source ecosystem.
  • Security by default: Ensuring security as a priority in all software projects.
  • Foster inclusive participation and community building: Ensuring and encouraging diverse and inclusive contributions.
  • Design for reuse: Developing projects compatible with various platforms and ecosystems.
  • Provision of documentation: Providing detailed documentation for end-users, integrators, and developers.
  • RISE (Recognize, Incentivize, Support, Empower): Empowering individuals and communities to actively participate.
  • Sustainability and scalability: Supporting the development of solutions that meet the evolving needs of the UN system and beyond.

We will guide our activities according to these principles and actively promote them alongside the Sustainable Development Goals and other UN initiatives. We encourage everyone to actively participate in removing boundaries, to strive towards creating and developing tools and resources for building a fairer world, to preserve existing and create new opportunities, and to remember that changes in the digital era start with pressing a single button—for example, the “Join the Pirate Party of Russia” button.
