If you want your post to be as widely visible as possible, you might want to use groups as well as hashtags:

Even if you have no followers, posts sent to groups will be visible to everyone following the group and also everyone on their servers.
Posts that just use hashtags will only be seen on servers that have "noticed" your account:

In a nutshell: groups distribute posts actively, hashtags distribute posts passively. Using both is best.

I'm sure you're doing it right! You just mention the group in the post, and follow the group so you can see other people's discussions on the topic.
As you say, groups do depend a lot more on how many others are following the group and very small groups may not be seen by many people. (That's why it's a good idea to use hashtags as well so you're covered both ways.)

in reply to Violet • • •Looking at the github and socials for Chirp, it unfortunately looks like the Chirp maintainer is absent. There are still active Chirp groups run by others, but the Chirp software itself hasn't been updated since March 2023 😔
I've removed Chirp from the guide until the developers become active again.
If you want a Fedi group system with moderation you might want to try Friendica? It has a Chirp-style group system and group members don't have to be on Friendica.
