If you want your post to be as widely visible as possible, you might want to use groups as well as hashtags:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on…

Even if you have no followers, posts sent to groups will be visible to everyone following the group and also everyone on their servers.

Posts that just use hashtags will only be seen on servers that have "noticed" your account:

➡️ fedi.tips/which-posts-and-acco…

In a nutshell: groups distribute posts actively, hashtags distribute posts passively. Using both is best.

#mastoadmin-tipp: add a #FediBuzz Relay relay.fedi.buzz for hashtags that are relevant to your users. Especially small servers will "see" a lot more of the fediverse

I haven't really gotten much traction when I've attempted to use groups. Perhaps I'm not doing it right, or perhaps the groups I've tried weren't very popular 😀

@feoh

I'm sure you're doing it right! You just mention the group in the post, and follow the group so you can see other people's discussions on the topic.

As you say, groups do depend a lot more on how many others are following the group and very small groups may not be seen by many people. (That's why it's a good idea to use hashtags as well so you're covered both ways.)

groups sound like lemmy/ kbin communities without its own interface 👀

@Fedi.Tips We also highlight the directory of Friendica groups, which work exactly like an Activity Pub group. In addition, they also allow some elements of moderation such as the darkening of spam profiles

Useful tip, but I looked on the list and as a topless equality activist and pro-sex-worker-but-not-a-sex-worker-myself activist and content creator, absolutely NONE of these seem related to what I would be posting in the hopes of increasing outreach...maaaaaybe a.gup.pe/u/lgbtqia specifically for my interviews with trans people, but I assume if I posted anything that was just about topless equality, they would be upset that it doesn't directly relate to being queer? (aside from the fact that gender-based censorship is blatantly transphobic, as at what point in transition does someone gain or lose the right to go topless in public and online?)

I created a group on chirp.social this morning. So far, I'm not impressed. Either your post caused a rush of new users or their server/bandwidth is grossly undersized. I'd like to use this server because it has good moderation tools. But if there's no change, I'll just have to use hashtags to grow a group organically.

Looking at the github and socials for Chirp, it unfortunately looks like the Chirp maintainer is absent. There are still active Chirp groups run by others, but the Chirp software itself hasn't been updated since March 2023 😔

I've removed Chirp from the guide until the developers become active again.

If you want a Fedi group system with moderation you might want to try Friendica? It has a Chirp-style group system and group members don't have to be on Friendica.

Wow, thanks for sharing.👍
I noticed there's no group for retrogaming or retrocomputing yet.
I think I'm going to create some.
