Grant Wood. Study for Agricultural Science Mural, 1934.

He experimented in "hard-edge" in his early murals. As a gay man also from rural America, I can't help but see beyond seeing here. I know what hay-hauling meant to my youth, as homosocial space, as industrial work in the open air, with male bodies straining and sparring, with male bodies in cooperation. He knew this also, and I see it constantly hemmed into his work, integral, crucial, but often overlooked.

I've never understood why some paintings have "studio of X" in their title.

Maybe because they're are just an attempt, an experiment, to learn how to paint something before doing the real work?

If so, for each "studio of X" we should also have a painting very similar to the "studio of X", maybe named just "X", or something like that, but it doesn't seem the case.

So why, if you know it?

@max yes I think it may be that the final works don't always make it down through history to compare. Also it's interesting to see the process that an artist goes through to plan a major work, particularly when a final version is very different from the conception.

@max In English there's a difference between study and studio, so I hope I've understood your question. Because there's that other component, which Italians know so well, of "by the workshop of" (or studio of) which applies to painters who made it big and then had other people do much of the execution and even planning for them, in their signature style.

@Tarnport

I made a mistake, I wrote "studio" but I meant "study" as you wrote in your post, sorry for that.

And yes, you're right, in Italian "studio" is a noun with two meanings.

1. The act of studying "lo studio รจ importante nella vita" ("study is important in life");

2. The place where an artist, or whatever knowledge worker, does his job. "Prego, si accomodi nel mio studio", "Please come into my office" (not 100% sure this is a good translation but it should give an idea).
