#DeltaChat experimentations and questions

I attempted to install Delta Chat on my Pixel 9 running GrapheneOS and I couldn't get the QR code pairing to work.

So I attempted the "restore from backup" method and it worked seamlessly and instantaneously.

Since Delta Chat doesn't require a phone number or an email address, I wonder what are the best practices to ensure you don't lose access to your account? (In case you lose your main phone)?

I have it set up on my iPhone, on my second phone running GrapheneOS, on two Macs in Paris and now on a MacMini in Italy... so 5 devices in total.

How often do you run backups? Shall I do them every week? Any other advice to share?

that is the beauty of Delta Chat!! every device works as an INCREMENTAL automatic backup!!! you don't need to worry, nor pay for some cloud space for backup, every one of your devices is a backup and a fully working "main device" so if you lose some device it doesn't matter

I honestly don’t know why Delta Chat is not widely used.

People tend to gravitate towards Matrix or XMPP which are not bad. My main complain with XMPP is the lack of decent clients on iOS. Matrix on the other hand feels like too much for most users.

I'll try see if I can migrate a family group to Delta Chat because my sister-in-law has issues with Signal since a phone migration and she only uses Whatsapp with her parents so she's left out of the family Signal group chat...

Oh wow, a family group on Signal, that is a new for me.

I guess I am just biased because my family, who is in Mexico, mostly use WhatsApp.

Good luck with the migration!

I got my family and friends to move to Signal 6 years ago when I deleted my WhatsApp account - but they all continue to use WhatsApp too for their communications with other people 🥲
in reply to Erick

it needs video calls and group moderation. but eventually it might have these too. also - no pr. also it is actually widely used, but maybe not in the global north, but rather in some censorship-leaning countries.

it is a totally amazing solution if you ask me.

And here I am showing up again my bias. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve been wanting to use it since I discovered it some time ago but I am bad at convincing my family and friends to move over and follow me 🫣.

a friend's approach was to kindly, almost apologetically ask family members to allow him to stay in touch with them by installing Delta, because he will leave all other apps...
in reply to prince lucija

that’s what I did 6 years ago to convince my family and friends to install Signal (who was still pretty obscure at the time). I feel like it’s a big ask though to ask them to install ANOTHER app for messaging, sigh 🥲

@Elena Rossini on GoToSocial ⁂ I love Delta/Arcane 💜
It's the only decentralised app I'm sure I can tell a random friend "just install it" and we can chat in like 30 seconds with no issues at all. Easier than Signal. Oh and those mini-apps 🤩 (btw no need for backups, as @adb said)
