Two years ago, #EDPS embarked on a pioneering journey launching a pilot project of two decentralised social media platforms: #EUVoice & #EUVideo.

18 May will mark the end of the project. Time to review the results of this successful story.

@helma ...seriously, with all the money going around in the EU it can't fund the servers for EDPS ? Besides the fact that this funding would directly contribute to explicit EU goals with regard to digital/digitisation ? How can this happen ? 🤔

in reply to EDPS

It is all too sad that you in specific as privacy protector leave this platform.
in reply to EDPS

normal que se chapen las instancias, la UE no es mas que la mascota de USA, y por tanto, debe obedecer sus órdenes y usar sus redes monitorizadas por sus agencias de inteligencia en vez de tener soberanía.

It looks like it is time for a change in the EU. Everybody fully knowing they operate against the law while breaking GDPR should be in full personal responsibility. These people are mostly the ones killing decentralized projects where people control their data.

So much money are burned for senseless things there and they are unable to operate a few servers?

Hopefully media is making a huge story out of it so the election in June is a chance for a massive change.

Unbelievable.

in reply to EDPS

This is very regrettable, if the project is so successful, why not expand it and make it permanent?

in reply to EDPS

could you explain what this sentence means?

> we have been unable to secure new ownership to maintain the servers

Ownership of what? Does this means that these were so far not your servers?
@EU_Commission has quite a few servers for their websites and programs so I'm having a hard time imagining how keeping two more services would not be possible...

Anyway, that's really quite sad.

in reply to EDPS

this is really unfortunate, to say the least.

I appreciate that you embarked on this project. Thank you for taking that risk!

The fact that all of the European Commission cannot find an agency to own it and continue maintaining it is unfathomable.

Especially in the context of how digital sovereignty gets so much lip-service from the Commission.

EC's priorities seem upside-down.

in reply to pettter

@pettter @rysiek
Reading between the lines, it seems that people in charge of funding don't understand the point of self-hosted social media. They just think "more/easier followers on commercial centralised services" and don't think any further about how those follows are manipulated and held hostage through algorithms etc.
Questa voce è stata modificata (1 settimana fa)
in reply to EDPS

you should reconsider. Having your own instance means we know these accounts are legit, and boost trust. If you crowdsource, I will even contribute. Cc @rysiek
in reply to Alberto Cottica

same, even though I suspect crowdsourcing is legally difficult for an EU institution like @EDPS.

I think that money is not the problem. In this bureaucratic world they need someone who becomes responsable and can say: We do it.

It's a tragedy because now they give that power to people like Musk and Zuckerberg & Co.

@NatureMC @rysiek of course money is not the problem. What we are doing here is participation, even collaboration with democratic European institutions. Which is the point of their social media presence. Hopefully someone in Comms at EDPS flags it to the higher ups. "People really appreciate us being here, just saying...". Will you do it, person running the account? It would be a way for the 100K citizens following @EU_Commission to feel closer to the EU institutions.

so this means you'll be working for commercial platforms that do not ensure privacy from now on... Probably it's time to defund you since you're clearly not fulfilling your purpose.
in reply to EDPS

Sad. Re:

> The EDPS will facilitate the required migration of EUIs who wish to keep their accounts active in the Fediverse

Do you need fediverse instance admins to volunteer their instances to host the migrating accounts? Do you already have adequate target instances for everyone?

Really great that the pilot was a success! It's super sad that the #EU will stop with Mastodon and PeerTube now because of resources since it was a success. It's sad that there are resources to maintain presence on #BigTech social media but not here. Thank you anyway for at least trying this with a pilot!
in reply to EDPS

That is rather astounding as EDPS and other institutions do remain on Twitter, despite adtech being time and again found in breach of GDPR. Because X accounts don't carry any out-of-pocket costs, except the externalised costs to all EU citizen's privacy. I applaud the EDPS' experiment, but this is not exactly leading by example, and precisely at the time the EC is trying to make enforcing the digital and data strategies believable to the public eye.
in reply to EDPS

WHY when it was successful, WHY??? And does it mean that The EU will also give up the EU-instance completely?
I hear NOW that these platforms existed ... perhaps your communication was not so successful?
Why before the elections? That's so dangerous.
And you want to give ressources and power to the big corporations that violate EU law so often???

Can you publish the number of followers the individual accounts had/have?
in reply to EDPS

This is a huge step backwards and extremely short-sighted by whoever is responsible for this decision.
in reply to EDPS

@edps Sad 😢 ! How does this fit with the following recent post from @EU_Commission ?

It has been a huge success, so you're stopping? Is that EU logic?
in reply to EDPS

It's really depressing that an institution as powerful as the #EU can't find an agency to keep running these successful projects. :/
#eu
in reply to EDPS

disappointing, this will only hinder the EU's data sovereignty objectives, but thanks to those who worked on this pilot for the past two years
in reply to EDPS

Dear EDPS and other responsible for this decision,
I will gladly manage Mastodon servers for you, moderate them and pay out of my own pocket for it. How many accounts do you have? 50 or so? No problem.
Please contact me and continue your presence on #fediverse.
Dissapearing from fediverse will send a strong negative signal, dismissing EU's digital soverignty.

Hi @po3mah! Thank you for the offer, and for being an active part of our community on the fediverse. Know that we intend to keep our account running, and are actively working on a solution.
in reply to European Commission

@EU_Commission @po3mah

Thank you for responding and for 2-way communication!

Could you please clarify your (and other EU institutions) plans, because @EDPS is sending mixed and cryptic messages like 'experiment completed, service will be closed, only those who wish will remain'.

in reply to EDPS

🤦‍♂️Seriously? But for sure enough resources for M365 etc. I am shocked. Farewell digital sovereignty.#EUVoice #EUVideo #EU

Perhaps you can submit a proposal to @NGIZero for funding and have DG CNECT pay for it indirectly that way ;)
in reply to EDPS

This is very disappointing and concerning. Why are you calling it a success AND shutting down? How does this go together with the EUs goal toward being more independent from closed source platforms. This makes no sense.
in reply to EDPS

ok, no the @EU_Commission's toot on their commitment to remain in the #fediverse makes sense.

A pity that you can't keep the domain and server running and hand it over to some other #EU agency which is able to keep the lights on. I do hope those EU agencies will be able to move to another European server soon.

Would you mind publishing the slides, too, of Wojciech Wiewiórowski's talk "Fediverse for Public Administration. Why we try and why we fail?" at the Freedom Not Fear Conference 2023?

It is a pity that some metrics get mentioned verbally, but one cannot look up what exactly they are, and how they look like.

in reply to EDPS

It seems a bit off. On the one hand, it is saying that the pilot was a success; it was well used and it achieved its goal. But then it goes on to say that it will not continue.

Like "everything went great, and so we're shutting it down". I'd like to hear more about the reasons for that.

in reply to EDPS

Closing this down now does more harm than had this pilot never been started, as it suggests a Meta or X alternative is easier.

Setting up and maintaining a fediverse server is done by amateurs across the globe in their free time using Ko-fi pocket money. That's not easy, but the fediverse thrives regardless.

Keeping this up with the resources at the EU's disposal should be zero effort. "Not able to secure resources" can only be interpreted as a lack of trying

in reply to EDPS

Hello @EDPS please move your feed to @eupolicy.social and thus keep going on Mastodon. We are a small group of volunteers, including one from the EDPS, running this server. It costs you nothing and it is run to highest data protection and security standards.
