Turns out around 700 GB of media storage on mastodon.social was being consumed by multiple Twitter "bridges" running on different domains, reposting Twitter users' tweets into the fediverse as far as I'm aware without their (the Twitter users') participation or knowledge.

That's 10% of our media storage accumulated over 6 years. At least cross-posters set up their own accounts, that's still legit use. This, it just feels so wasteful. How Twitter even gives out API keys for this, I don't know.

Pff, that's a load..

How often do you clean external media on .social and .online?

in reply to Eugen Rochko

I wonder why these Twitter reposting accounts don't do double opt-in like fed.brid.gy/ does for Blue$ky and actually make it useful to NOT have a Twitter account same as there isn't a need now for a B.$. account. 🤔

I wonder when they will do a #TikTok & #RedNote bridge accounts' for #DoubleOptIn setting the standards for #ActivityPub bridge to #anythingsocialnetwork. 🤔

#RFE #BridgeEverything to the #fediverse 🧐

Heh, that's why Smithereen stores remote media in a LRU cache of a configurable limited size, instead of storing permanently. The downside is that it takes noticeable time and way too many roundtrips to load each remote image when it's first accessed.
in reply to Григорий Клюшников

Our cache isn't permanent either, but the eviction is a manual process. Well, manual unless you put it in cron. But that's not the point. It's still wasteful, it still costs money and processing power even if it gets removed eventually, and for what - ghost accounts

Block 'em... I post the same content on 13 different social media platforms but... I do it intentionally... I choose to post on each of them because I want my words read by as many people as possible... and Just using FaceBorg and Twitter ignores hundreds of my followers... I limit my mastodon posts because I have some respect for this platform... Unlike Twitter... I spam them like crazy!

For make you a miniCEO subsidary of twitter: same politics, same censorship. mastodon.social sucks.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

it's so important that content creators, viewers, data analysists and technology enthusiats alike to come together and start investing in smaller websites and social media outlets

snap, I might be guilty of this (I have Twitter-Mastodon crossposting enabled).

Should I turn it off?

in reply to eons Luna

It's fine, you're obviously here and reposting of your own volition. It's the third-party bots that really bother me.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Eugen @Eons Luna • Alex Ong We must also begin to understand that it is not useful to bring the twitter garbage in the fediverse: cross-posting is good especially if it brings contents FROM the fediverse TO twitter. On mastodon you can see too many users duplicating their contents from twitter, even if they are not robots: it is not a service that is good for the fediverse!
Here, at Friendica (which allows for easy crosspposting), I'm trying to explain to my friends at the instance, that bringing content from twitter is only okay occasionally, and ONLY IF that content brings value to the discussion.

killing energy (disposible data / streaming / massive video sizes)...

The original topic was a big different so this is not 100% the same - more leaning towards file size usage and how exponentially large things are getting (including people's care-free attitudes which I might have called a bourgeois / middle class learning curve starting from 'it's ok to use massive space because I'm doing it for the good of mankind' and going more towards 'wow we're so lucky to have infinite space, let's save it! It's not free to nature, hardware, servers, storage disks, cpu's ETC'

That was the TLDR - save yourself the rest - you know it already but I'm seeking help a bit in the awareness to the bourgeois.....

So from yuor post I feel similar to this about 1080p videos everywhere and literally in this one case 1.4gb for 2hrs of almost static people talking about the war... 1.4gb - for 1 video + smaller copies? Crazy world friends... like UNLEARNING IS THE KEY.

I should change my name to UNLEARNING SCHOOL

Now without putting too much emotional spin, imagine innocent 'do good' people or next-gens who don't get why x2 x3 x4 filesizes are a problem...
They were talking about things like war and possibly how bad and wasteful it is... well guess what! Dead energy is quite the same thing! + time + backups + friends in a house asking why internet is slow and bottlenecking...

So that's a bit of insight even people running their own ship... knowingly...using.... and
Disposing up and down streams... daily backups and massive media - all a joke if I'm to make fun and comparison of the war talk...

And then using American storage space is a another general bad thing.
(shake of head - real war is perhaps people uploading 24/7 and many more hours worth of stuff than there is hours in the day itself). Not sustainable captain Gargron/Captain Eugen

Same with MegaPixels on cameras..

-------------------------------
And moving the rant a bit on:
--------------------------------

Honestly people need training and policing too + soft-hard rules
The all-you-can-eat is killing us (and my bandwidth and shared net that can't handle it literally can't).
It's taught people the default not need restriction or reasoning or always go for max and to pay more because my computer is too slow internet is too fast)-
THESE ARE ALL MAGICAL POINTS OF BALANCE - ELSE DRIVE WASTEFUL SPORTSCARS EVERYWHERE GUZZLING all the while.
I wouldn't even use 'unlimited'... which if a provider gave me it.
I'm extreme in the way I live (don't look at profile links!)
But anyway I know there is real costs to nature water, hardware, politics etc.... it's a HABIT AND HABITAT TOO.

Help us master... we're drowning in our own shit. These same people ask for more money, instead of learning more sense.

FINAL SUMMARY
Give the bourgeois (middle classes) tools and they only expect more and not humble enough or clever enough to THINK (even though they are technically do know how to do things) ... maybe just 'actually 5 faces of us talking on a screen is NOT worth Hollywood 1080p so let's do 'our bit for the world' and tone it down a bit to 480p like half size of less.

NOT 1,4Gb for 2hours talking about the war.... saying "oh isn't it terrible what's happening in the world'.... yes indeed it is!

Anyway if you can help arrange a workshop or double check or something I think you will save the world if only people deleted their temporary folders / reduced video size and camera megapixels and many other 'standards' that measurably are not measured today and just the same lost usage. (Peertube auto-playing at max res doesn't help either unless they have a user preference save I don't know about - still the 1080+copies is often too much for static stuff)

Lots to fixes someone else could help do (send the word Cap!) but more in the habits rather than giving us more tools and stuff to FUCK UP - I'm grateful but I'd cut my hand off to stop others killing big time.
Killing energy AND disposable lives think they deserve to burn the world for their little things in BIG file format.

Workshops / videos welcome at 480p if you know I can send to people.... thanks
