We appreciate that certain politicians have recently admitted their naivete in entrusting the voices of their governments to corporate / for-profit social media.

To these politicians, we say: joinmastodon.org/hosting

in reply to Mastodon

Well they could have a presence in the fediverse as well as wherever else they have accounts already.
I've told my local council to have their emergency announcements on more than Meta and Twitter, but it falls on deaf ears.
in reply to Mastodon

even better: They should host their own. Our governments should be proficient in managing public IT infrastructure. The knowledge should be internal, not external.

You’re making sense, but there’s s better brighter goal further along the road from here, brother.

in reply to Toni Aittoniemi

@gimulnautti you're absolutely right (and that would be the best outcome) and we also offer support services for those that want to operate their own. blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/09/…
in reply to Mastodon

One thing that politicians should really consider is creating their own instance to give them complete control of their messaging and build their public image.

Think about the benefit that Trump has gained from Truth Social.

By posting things on their own social media site they can draw interest from the media to their posts in a way that is superior to just riding other platforms.

how quickly would their instance be muted on mastodon.social after they come out in defense of the Palestinian people against the genocide perpetrated by Netanyahu's government?

(Reference for the curious: <manganiello.social/objects/fea…> cc @fabio)

I am planning to shut down this account and abandon social media for a while.

I have canceled myself to try to help as many as possible lately, and supported everyone against slanderous accusations directed at them.

That ended up with my account being limited on mastodon.social with no notice, no explanation and no appeal, while anonymous genocide denialists, trolls and nasty people who tried to halt fundraising for Gaza are still allowed to act under a blanket of absolute impunity.

I can't even communicate effectively with new accounts in need from Gaza if my profile is hidden on the main instance.

I'll keep cheering for @aral and @joynewacc from the sidelines, they're doing an amazing job, and I'll keep supporting accounts from Gaza, because it's the right thing to do.

Just not here, and away from the spotlights - also for my own safety.

I may be back one day, I don't know if on Nostr, or some other platform that has already taken into account the fact that the admin of the largest instance of a decentralized network can also be an asshole who has the power to cut you from your own network and those you're trying to help, even when you run your own instance.

Adieu.

Oblomov reshared this.

in reply to Oblomov

@oblomov I am pro-Israel and the war on Hamas. Yes, I am a Christian. I know my views are not popular with many folks on the Fediverse, but I'm not fishing for followers.

That being said, I agree with @Mastodon that the Fediverse is a far more suitable place for government social media (especially self-hosted instances). I also agree with you @oblomov, that mainstream instances will silence people. #SelfHost people!

in reply to Mastodon

but don't join mastodon-social or mstdn-social if you want to express anti-genocide views

they have a history of crushing anti-genocide voices, deleting posts, silencing accounts, using false reasons to censor criticism of Israel, even cancelling them without notice or explanation - and ignoring GDPR requests

@rzeta0 Hi Tariq, we appreciate you reaching out about this and understand your frustration. We are deeply saddened by the loss of human life in Gaza and condemn the ongoing genocide perpetrated by Israel. We also strongly support Aral's work on Gaza-Verified.org.
in reply to Mastodon.social Staff

@rzeta0 Criticizing Israel has always been allowed. We also have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to racism, including antisemitism, not only due to our values but our local jurisdiction (Germany). Thanks again for reaching out about this. We’re always looking to improve moderation on mastodon.social, and your input helps us do that.

@staff

also you might want to explain your behaviour to @fabio

@staff @fabio

and yes, dear readers of this thread, that is yet another example of how mastodon-social behaves

in reply to Tariq

so basically you’re bragging about the initiative that @aral and @joynewacc have set up (with support from me behind the lines), putting our own names and surnames next to it, taking all the risks and all the threats on ourselves, while repeatedly shielding anonymous ultra-Zionist accounts that reported for antisemitism even AI-generated caricatures, and kept throwing mud on Gaza Verified, to the point of calling even the victims of a genocide that you were supposed to protect on your own instance scammers or antisemitic (sample 1, sample 2) for daring to compare the death that Israel brought upon them to the one that the Nazis brought upon Jews?

And then you muted MY profile instead of theirs, despite the widespread condemnation against those vile attacks, and despite me being actually one of the guys working on Gaza Verified?

Can you please confirm that the reports from those pro-genocide trolls constituted the grounds for your actions against my account?

You know right that because of your absolute incompetence at moderating a platform that is trying to handle an already delicate humanitarian initiative you have ended up with newly registered users from Gaza on your instance that were crying for help, even tagged me, and they couldn’t see my replies because they weren’t following me?

You know right that you may have to cut some lifelines there, because both Aral and Joy were busy in these days and couldn’t respond to all the requests?

You know right that you’ve silenced the guy who set up the Gaza archive for this initiative, to make sure that all of the content uploaded by the verified accounts is persisted even if some admins decide to kick them out, and the guy who uncovered some Gaza scams on your instance in July whose claims you were too lazy to verify?

And then you also have the guts of bragging about OUR initiative despite the damage you’re doing to it, just because you’re responding to a couple of questions from Aral?

How much credibility do you think you have left?

How much are you going to lie in our own face while taking undeserved credit and silencing the voices trying to save as many lives as possible?

p.s. It’d be great if someone could take a screenshot or a quote of this post and paste it to @staff. Those guys have silenced my account and they’re even ignoring emails from me and Aral, so I’m not sure if they can even see what I write to them.

@rzeta0

Raising money to alleviate suffering in #Gaza is in-and-of-itself a Noble thing.

Running a charity is hard work, and mistakes happen all the time.

Aral, I know we've had our disagreements. When you discover someone has stolen from your donors, do not give them your "blessing."

1) Make a best effort to recover the stolen funds, to fulfill your donor's wishes.

2) Apologize to the accounts trying to help, to warn you about this.

Failing these remediations, #FediBlock Aral for Charity Fraud.

because currently the vast majority of accounts from Gaza is registered there. Which means:

  1. They are currently exposed to regular harassment and defamation from malicious actors on the main instance that have been acting with impunity for years
  2. We can’t respond to their calls for help if we are muted, unless they already follow us
in reply to Mastodon

Macron is right but at the same time he doesn’t want to do anything about it.

you should post this on the trash platforms to reach them. 😉 Or write them directly.

every government should have their own instance for public employees accounts only

I think I missed some discourse. any kind scholar care to point me at the inspiration for this toot?
in reply to LAHosken 🇺🇸👀

@lahosken macron identified US social networks as a risk to democracy a couple days ago lemonde.fr/en/international/ar… it was in the context of building up independent capacity for military action and he specifically identified user anonymity as problematic, neither of which i suspect the mastodon project agrees with
in reply to d@nny disc@ mc²

@hipsterelectron @lahosken
well, maybe I just want to be optimistic, but they are referring to big Us commercial giants
"where the rule is to insult others if one wants to be popular."

We are a glass box in that sense.

yeah, really, Who Made Who, Who Owns Who, I don't think we have a party in action that wants to rattle ALL the knuckleheads, on BOTH sides, and put THEM in a cage, so the rest of the people on earth can get back to taking a hard stab at enjoying a life on THIS planet. WTAF. They're so outnumbered, I don't understand.
