New blog-post: "When online commenters 'detect' my art as AI"

davidrevoy.com/article1164/whe…

in reply to David Revoy

in reply to David Revoy

@arabine
From demonic possession, through identity theft, to AI slop. It's an old trope for an interloper to claim they are the real you.

If it's any use, there's this initiative (supposedly Pope endorsed!):

in reply to Jérémy -Jeey-

in reply to David Revoy

in reply to Jérémy -Jeey-

@jeeynet

in reply to Sylvhem

in reply to David Revoy

@faoluin even bot comments aside, just the other day Evan Dahm was posting on bsky about how he was suddenly getting this big influx of really shitty (all cusses in this post are mine) comments on Meta platforms for a recent update to his serial - just lots of people who

(a) are not shown *anything* from the comic, following or not, because of arbitrary algo bullshit, until all of a sudden they are

(b) thereby have no context whatsoever about what they're looking at

(c) but nonetheless feel completely entitled to make judgment about the thing without taking any effort to seek out that obviously missing context that had not been spoonfed to them

it's pretty demoralizing all around and it just further validates my decision never to go near any Meta product again

in reply to David Revoy

They're all looking at technical details. Wrong approach. Human artists vary a lot in how
they depict fine details.

The way I can tell that your art isn't AI is how closely the mood of the characters matches the dialog. AI can't seem to really understand that people look at people, and isn't very good at subtle emotions displayed through facial expressions and body language.

Of course, in another year that could change ...

in reply to David Revoy

@gaditb
It's happening to lots of writers. Some forums are nothing but people claiming they put writing through an "AI detector" and the writing is obviously AI. It's soul-crushing, as you well know.

The other major group of people getting hit by this, ironically, are computer programmers. People who actually know how to code are being told their code is AI generated even when it's absolutely obvious it's not.

Anyone who creates is damaged by AI - even if they don't use it.

in reply to Gadfly (-booq-)

@gaditb I'm not a professional writer , just a very amateur blogger but I wrote this after someone commented on how "AI Generated" my blog was..

... despite me never actually using AI.

Even taking the personal views aside, after checking through some online AI detectors (AI's themselves mostly! Oh the irony!) I still scored high on the AI Gen score.

This was a slightly tongue in cheek response to that. But as stated above I'm in the unfortunate position where my normal writing voice sounds like something ChatGPT would spew out 🙁

the much bigger problem with AI than the fakes is all the "that's AI, that's AI, that's AI" easy cynical bullshit under absolutely everything

what's important is to not be touched personally by it

understand you are dealing with a phenomenon predicated on the usual lazy biases and haters that always exist

people suck. they don't care. they choose zero thought and meanness. it's an entire side of social media you just have to learn to ignore or mock

in reply to ⏩︎VOTE⏪︎ ᶜʸⁿⁱᶜⁱˢᵐ⁼ᵃᶜᶜᵉᵖᵗᵃⁿᶜᵉ (Ben Royce)

@benroyce @PeteLittle @gaditb
Certainly, I'm often browsing sciency vids, and if the vid is made within the last few days, I will *always* check in the commenty bit to see if they've fessed up to AI. If it obviously is, but not fessed up to, then I'll flag it.

I've said before, doing auto-gen on voice-overs for vids is OK, as it helps accessibility, but if the visuals or narrative are AI-gen, they get insta-blocked.

oh certainly, #AI shit exists

and absolutely, that's a problem

but there is this whole other problem of people who work on lazy bias and don't care and are just exercising their asocial tendencies and call every. fucking. thing. "AI"

for lulz. because they don't think. because they're assholes

i had a whole rant on it. it's a serious problem now:

mastodon.social/@benroyce/1154…

ps: i don't think that's what you're doing

Look at this picture

What do you see?

Context:

The picture blew up on social media because it depicts police outside the Louvre, which experienced a spectacular theft of Napoleonic jewels, which seems like a detail right out of Hercule Poirot or Arsène Lupin or Sherlock Holmes... and so... et voila... the frisson of this picture is remarkable

Is the picture real? Or is it #AI?

In my case I have proof they have! One of the books I did a chapter in is in the Anthropic case, and I know LAION5B scraped my art blog for art, I am guessing they trained the 100,000s of words I wrote there too.

So yeah, I'm not copying AI, they are probably copying me!

(although the em dashes are not my fault)

in reply to Yer Feff

@feff
I think this must be a 'user' thing, people assume you use Facebook, or other big tech social media, we can tell this as there is very little option to 'share on fediverse' for example.

Another example is the media talk about people who are apparently super famous usually either influencers or reality TV stars that no one out side of those circles of influence have even heard of.

in reply to Alexey Skobkin

@skobkin oh no the AI hatred is TOTALLY justified.

GenAI is lazy and ruining our livelihoods - I stopped creating my watercolours because I thought what is the point? I am feeding a machine without payment, I am not getitng royalties for the folks who created stuff on Midjourney and Stable Diffusion trained off my landscapes.

And it does matter how it's created. If it's created by stealing all our work - and yes my work like David's is in the training models, then it's bad and parasitic.

And terrible for the planet...all that water in a drought for the data centres...ugh.

I’m sorry you’re getting these comments. Your art is so full of heart I’ve never really thought to compare it to aigen. I don’t see how people see any similarities to be honest.

I love your art, the way you draw fantasy worlds and characters is a big inspiration to me. And it’s so cool to see that you do it all with Krita, it makes me want to give it a go and finally make that switch.

in reply to David Revoy

@gabrielesvelto As a fellow artist who stopped practicing professionally a few years before this AI shitstorm hit the field, I'm so sorry. This is horrifying.

Artists have always been incredibly undervalued by modern society, but this is a new low. I weep for all my artist friends, and for all the damage this exploitative technology is doing to our world.

reshared this

in reply to Em

@Em0nM4stodon @gabrielesvelto Thirded. Some years ago, I started pulling down all my artwork bc I was not comfortable with AI. I decided that I wouldnt share anything further if I could not change my comfort level and framing

.....and in the years since I have grown even less comfortable. I have made peace with the fact that my art is (and has always been) for me. Thats all that matters and I dont have to ever do anything I am uncomfortable with

in reply to David Revoy

in reply to David Revoy

@David Revoy

You are assuming these comments come from humans and users are real people.

AI generator content spammers have all the interest on creating FUD and hijacking true people toward fake profiles with fake arts to funneling traffic on their websites.

You are a known artist, if this continue you might be under a fake-users-farm attack

in reply to David Revoy

in reply to David Revoy

Man... You know, the really, really bizarre ones to me aren't the ones that, like, accuse you of using AI, despite you having literal decades of documentation and video proof of your hand.

It's the ones that accuse you of deliberately using an AI style, as if you're trying to trick them into thinking it's AI?

I wonder if some people just genuinely can't tell the difference between corporatized AI "style" and a soft, stylized cartoon with warm colors and a painterly texture.

in reply to Toon Link

@ToonLink Yes, that's why I'm on alert: many people now think my art is just as bad as "AI slop", and I understand why.
So I feel torn: I don't know if I should adapt, shift and bend my style until it's no longer "identified as AI", or if I should abandon the aesthetic that's such a big part of me (if only I can?). I'll think a lot about it while painting on the next weeks. I'll also take a little bit of holidays in August, I think it is the right time for it.
in reply to David Revoy

@ToonLink This, too, will pass. Internet commenters have always been Like This™; it is wise not to heed them so much.

I'm a fairly prolific internet commenter, but many of these people spend entirely too much time writing posts online, and not enough trying to understand the world. Their opinions are superficial, and widely disseminated.

When they make specific criticisms, saying this or that feature "looks AI", that's most likely a post-hoc rationalisation of their gut instincts.

in reply to David Revoy

I don't think changing the style would change anything. I honestly don't think your style looks like AI (or at least not the AI I've seen), and you might end up chasing dragons for something that won't stop the accusations anyway.

It's just... so strange. I think that, since those kind of places are so full of AI, people are extra vigilant. It stops being a reality check and starts being a defense against "falling for it", to the point that people want to see AI that isn't there.

in reply to Toon Link

Obviously I'm not going to make demands. 😆 And I will support you in any decisions you make. I like your art because it comes from you, not because it looks a certain way (and definitely take some time off!)

But I think it's more important to live authentically, than to worry about if other people think you're "doing it right". I know that's different when you're worried about a career, but industry peeps have a different perspective from randos who might just want to shitstir.

in reply to David Revoy

I want to reframe this in a way that may help with making the decision. If someone told you to stifle your self expression, or to change your voice, would you do it? Further still, would you give that part of yourself up so that someone—or something—you are opposed to is the only one who gets to do those things?

I am by no means popular, but I am a creative. Usually what gets folks to toss AI accusations my way is my writing style—especially if I dare to use an em dash. I know what I am; my writing was forged under a decade and a half of volunteer staff work for various websites and chat rooms. My prose became very formal, concise, and tactful over time. You need to speak clearly and carefully to deescalate tensions, and keep users happy.

My lived experience is in my voice, as it surely is in yours. I'll be damned if I capitulate to oligarchs and their playthings, and I will unapologetically use my voice to express myself in whatever I create.

Despite everything, keep being you.

in reply to David Revoy

Well, those are the natural consequences of rallying up the wood folk against #Ai

Good art is now sometimes called out as "Ai" by non artist

(And this irks me to no end)
You make a longish, coherent post and it gets called "Chatgpt" by folk who struggle to put two sentences together.

This is why we prefer the justice system and not vigilantism...

...this is why we NEED #regulateAi vs Pitchfork mobbing on socials.

#llm #attribution #ailaw #regulation #vigilanties

in reply to David Revoy

@mousey This is nothing, check out this news: europol.europa.eu/media-press/…

7 people, hundreds of thousands of SIM cards, more than 49 million online accounts. Gives you the sense of scale. Now think about how many fake accounts nation states can create and use. Those accounts need fake interactions to appear real. Such accusations are an easy way to get those interactions.

in reply to Juank Prada Art

Also, for what is worth, allow me to say that your art has inspired me a lot both to improve mine as well as to embrace a similar path as yours in open source.

Please don’t get discouraged by those comments and keep rocking! One of the best things of Wednesdays for me is to find a new comic of yours being published 😅 (2/2)
@davidrevoy

in reply to David Revoy

I'm a writer. The same thing happens to me but with words.
I'm at a point where I almost don't want to write anymore, let alone publish it. It has always been my passion and seriously helped me work through trauma. And now it's all but gone, at least the creative work. Not once in my life have I used generative AI and it still has a massive impact on me.

Marcus Olang' wrote a good piece about it.

in reply to David Revoy

I remember I found one in the wild, and at least the accuser was apologetic when you shown your WIP.

AI-accusation now is just another way of dehumanising artists, but also with distinctive cluster of targets: the non-Westerners, the non-whites, the non native English speakers who are already dehumanised by the dominant culture are now having yet another low effort weapon against them, and somehow the burden of proof is on the accused. See; Ben Moran.

in reply to David Revoy

The dark truth is that the vast majority (me included) can’t pick out AI very well. It has to be quite obvious. And imho the worst part is that all of this is big corpo. The models especially.

If you could run AI locally on your machine and train it with your own material, I think it would be up to you if you wanted to/what you’d do with it.

But they took that choice away.

in reply to David Revoy

Which is why jumping on people isn’t the answer to anything. Doesn’t help anyone’s cause. The false positives are just too common.

If anything it will become more a case of trust. I know your art from here, and I trust that you wouldn’t knowingly post someone else who isn’t at least reasonably trustworthy.

Basically human connections need to get more important in general. Especially with all the propaganda bots.

in reply to David Revoy

in reply to David Revoy

It's also unfortunate, because they could just scroll your website / timeline and see that your style has developed! The early comics are not the same as the newest ones! There's learning, refinement, growth, it's organic.

But when everything is consumed in random snapshots served by an algorithm, most of the audience doesn't see artists' trajectories, and most horrifyingly, seem to forget that such a thing exists. All media exists in an endless state of "right now".

in reply to David Revoy

While it hasn't happened to me as much (in part because I only post here really and am not as well known or popular of an artist), it is devastating every time someone makes that accusation.

I find that the people making accusations usually just have a feeling, and then pile on the confirmation bias as they search for reasons in the art itself to justify their feeling.

Keep doing what you do. It's invaluable. Even if there are those who can't be bothered to do the research, having real art made by real artists is so important right now.

in reply to Ren

@ziphi Thank you. Yes, the confirmation bias; on the one I posted yesterday, I forgot at the end to add the decals of the 'AI stars' on the wing of the parrot, on panel 1. That's usually something I do at the end, after shading, just glazing this type of decals. I received probably three comments about this specific detail, under a suspicious angle.
Sometime, I'm really tempted to paint a hand with 6 fingers, turn the color balance to yellow on purpose, and create more inconsistencies to react.
@Ren
in reply to David Revoy

in reply to Noe 🐝✨

in reply to David Revoy

Ce monde me fascine.

in reply to Tradjincal

in reply to Cyaniris

in reply to David Revoy

in reply to Cyaniris

@Cyani Idem.
in reply to David Revoy

on another side, facebook/reddit et al. users aren't the most intelligent people to the point one wonders how did they not die in their childhood from some stupid accident

would you take genuine advice from a bumbling idiot? no

then stop treating a bunch of morons as an authority. they probably clap at actual fucking slop on their feeds

in reply to David Revoy

This is my biggest fear with high quality digital art (which, inevitably, ends up as source material for AI mostly due to the unscrupulous ways that stuff is scraped). I know a lot of folk whose workflows switched to entirely digital WAY before all of this nonsense kicked off who are getting exactly the same, and it's particularly insulting when you MAKE A POINT OF POSTING YOUR PROCESS VIDEOS REGULARLY! Which says more about these commenters' complete lack of engagement
in reply to Peejmaybe

@Peejmaybe Thank you. I can't really blame them to not check the timelapse or the efforts I put to show it's human made, if they dislike the style, associate it to AI slop, they'll not invest in the effort anyway. That's how I understand why those comments don't check, even if I put literally the timelapse on everyone of my post (or under in the reply, depending the platform).
in reply to David Revoy

I'm sure this won't make much of a difference but if it helps at all, I never got an AI vibe from any of your (beautifully drawn BTW) comics. No idea what these people are seeing beyond the whole "Everyone I disagree with is a bot" thing going a little overboard lately.

Maybe you should start your next comic with a character saying "You're absolutely right" just to mess with them 😉

in reply to David Revoy

A few months ago, somebody filed a complaint with my Fediverse instance. They said that I must be an AI because I seem different. Fortunately, it's my instance. I host and run it. So, the investigation didn't take too long. 😄

Similarly, I saw a post here in the Fediverse last night about how 1,000s of people had accused a genuine Monet painting of being AI "slop".

So, the answer to the question is that it's going to be a witch hunt.

I'm an engineer of half a century's standing. I consider so-called "AI" to be a mania that will end in a crash without precedent. However, witch hunts, hue and cry, this does nobody any good.

@davidrevoy : On a related note, see your Fediverse direct messages.

@gytisrepecka True, it's really rare; yesterday, I also posted this under my comic here: framapiaf.org/@davidrevoy/1170…

Thanks for the support! Funny thing I wanted to plug here: I've never received comments like that here on the Fediverse :fediverse: , but I get dozens of them, weekly, on the Meta platforms (Facebook/Instagram)...

I'm really grateful for how this community checks artists' work and actually verifies it's real human art before throwing random accusations.

This is my favorite place to share for a reason. 💜

in reply to David Revoy

That's gotta suck so bad to see after putting all the effort you do into your work.

Originally when I saw your art, it took me a second to recognize that your style was something I'd seen *replicated* by AI "art" models, and not that your work was just that style because it was AI. (though of course even a moment of closer inspection revealed it wasn't slop)

I try to avoid identifying AI art solely by general style or vibe for exactly that reason.

The world really sucks right now.

in reply to Voxel

@voxel Yes, but no method convinced me. The AI like nightshade proved their inefficiency too many times, changing the semantic of the picture (eg. 6 fingers) would detriment the aesthetic, and watermarking like fourrier transform could be cleaned up without much effort. You were thinking of a specific method? I haven't studied this since last December, I might be outdated on the current practices.
