Anyways I've never considered Lemmy as a "privacy" platform so it's not really how or why I ended up here. Most Lemmy instances don't even allow Tor usage, some block VPN usage too, and most require an email to sign up and register. On top of that each Lemmy instance is going to be as private as the instance admin is willing to make it.
I think part of that is because a significant number of /r/Piracy users on Reddit left because db0 was a mod there and advocated for swapping Lemmy during the API blackouts.
I think the subscribers count is fairly inaccurate. According to active users per week, it's number 34. And that'd align with my experience here. Other numbers include lots of nominal members who left Lemmy a long time ago. That mainly shows the Piracy community has had a bad time on Reddit and they were one of the larger coordinated efforts to switch platforms.

You can run llama.cpp on CPU. LLM inference doesn't need any features only GPUs typically have, that's why it's possible to make even simpler NPUs that can still run the same models. GPUs just tend to be faster. If the GPU in question is not faster than an equally priced CPU, you should use the CPU (better OS support).
Edit: I looked at a bunch real-world prices and benchmarks, and read the manual from Huawei and my new conclusion is that this is the best product on the market if you want to run a model at modest speed that doesn't fit in 32GB but does in 96GB. Running multiple in parallel seems to range from unsupported to working poorly, so you should only expect to use one.

The point is that the GPU is designed for parallel computation. This happens to be useful for graphics, AI, and any other problem that can be expressed as a lot of independent calculations that can be executed in parallel. It's a completely different architecture from a traditional CPU. This particular card is meant for running LLM models, and it will do it orders of magnitude faster than running this stuff on a CPU.

I disagree that you can categorise the speed as negating the capacity, as they're different axis. You can run bigger models on this. Smaller models will run faster on a cheaper Nvidia. You aren't getting 5080 performance and 6x the RAM for the same price, but I don't think that's a realistic ask either.
Can you train on it too? I tried Pytorch on AMD once and it was awful. They promised mountains but delivered nothing. Newer activation functions were all broken.
llama.cpp is inference only, for which AMD works great too after converting to ONNX. But training was awful on AMD in the past.
It takes a long time for large companies to change their purchases. Many of these datacenter contracts are locked in for years. You can't just change them overnight.
CUDA is not equivalent to AI training. Nvida offers useful developer tools for using their hardware, but you don't have to use them. You can train on any GPU or even CPU. The projects you've looked at (?) just chose to use CUDA because it was the best fit for what hardware they had on hand, and were able to tolerate the vendor lock-in.
I'm not saying you can deploy these in place of Nvidia cards where the tooling is built with Nvidia in mind. I'm saying that if you're writing code you can do machine learning projects without CUDA, including training.

Amazon is desperately trying to stop AI companies from training models on its data. They just added six more AI-related crawlers to the blacklist from Facebook(Meta), Google, Huawei, Mistral and others. A month ago we saw that they added Claude, Perplexity and a different Google crawler.
Some of those are to prevent access to Amazon at training, others to block features like deep research. The blacklist is in the publicly accessible robots.txt file. Assuming those crawlers are well-behaved, they will now stop accessing Amazon. It is notable that Amazon seems to be the only one actively fighting this - Walmart and eBay have not many any changes.

But, there will never, ever, ever be a better font than Palatino. Adobe’s Garamond Pro (and most Garamond knockoffs) are close, but Palatino is just amazing in every way. Specifically, Palatino Linotype is the best Palatino version.
That being said, Palatino doesn’t make a great display font. For that, I would much prefer Cantarell over that Nokia font.
Also, Ubuntu fonts are S tier. I don’t care if you disagree.
Out of the three fonts you mentioned that you liked (Palatino Linotype, Roboto, Cantarell), only Palatino Linotype has a true visual difference between a capital i, a lowercase L, and the number one. However, the differences between a lowercase L and the number 1 we're not significant enough for me (example: hello and he11o looked similar enough to be confused as the same when seen on their own). Other than that, I really liked the font.

There's been something of a fad in the last few years of organizing things into tier lists. As far as I can tell it comes from the gaming community, ranking player characters or items or weapons or whatever. The tiers follow the letter grading scale I think most of the English speaking world will have some understanding of; A through F without E with F being a failing grade. Apparently because Japan, an S tier for Superior is added above A.
A fun implementation of this is TierZoo. One of those Youtubers who is also on Nebula, his whole gimmick is he does educational videos (and lifeforms in general) in a very video game discussion style. As if he's a veteran player of an MMORPG called "Outside" in which every organism is a player character. If you want to get a good grip on the tier list phenomenon he provides many examples.

I don't know you but I love you for that Palatino statement. I've used it since forever (ie. back when Macs were black and white) and just love the curves of the italic style. These days, on Linux, I use Tex Gyre Pagella for basically all my documents.

Alla fine però ci siamo dovuti ricredere quando abbiamo conosciuto un libro “101 anagrammi zen” da cui si è sviluppata una comunità molto attiva sui social commerciali (X, Facebook, Instagram).
Il primo incontro con 101 anagrammi zen è stato una notizia del Corriere Della Sera su Gianni Morandi e nei commenti al post in Facebook era scritto così:

Fin dai primi giorni in cui abbiamo conosciuto “101 anagrammi zen” ci chiedevamo come fosse possibile ottenere la frase anagrammata come continuazione, sensata, di quella originale e nel tempo abbiamo capito il trucco: prendi l’originale, estrai una parola chiave da cui partire e sposta le lettere; sicuramente, l’autore dell’anagramma sull’amicizia, avrà estratto “amore” dalla frase “l’amicizia tra uomo e donna” e piano piano ha ricomposto gli altri termini con le lettere mancanti.
Nulla di magico quindi, è tutta questione di quali siano le idee dell’enigmista! Infatti noi potremmo continuare l’anagramma ponendo le dovute condizioni. Amore sì, ma…

Dopodiché scomponendo “orecchio” esce “io cerco” lasciando fuori l’h, che noi porteremo sulle parole precedenti: “io cerco untori, chi vuole”.
Ma considerando “chi vuole” come anagramma di “culo e HIV”…

Maybe every implementation of a GUI for the ActivityPub should have a "open in app" button that will prompt for any of the compatible apps installed on your device tô open that content.
Example 1: I am in this Forum (activitypub.space) and I want to reply to this thread using my Mastodon account. I click the button "open in app" and chose moshidon@floss.social as the app. Then Moshidon shows me the original post on its UI and I can reply using my Mastodon account.
Example 2: I'm browsing Lemmy on voyagerapp@mastodon.social and find a really interesting and funny meme I want to boost on Mastodon. I click the three dots (kebab) button and choose the option "open in another app…". The OS (Android, mainly) prompts me which app I want to open with. Again, I choose Moshidon e boost it to my followers.
It would be a very nice way to integrate these apps. The scheme protocol keyword could be "activitypub".

That said...! benpate@mastodon.social has been working on something called Activity Intents (w3id.org/fep/3b86) that offloads this from the browser layer and onto the web apps themselves.
It's something that could function as a stopgap until such time that a better solution is found for app-based clients.
Another solution involves the standard OAuth2 login flow to authenticate a user, and then using the ActivityPub API (aka C2S) to perform actions on behalf of the remote user.

L’autore ci trasporta dentro l’atmosfera degli ultimi anni dell’Alto Medioevo con grande ricchezza di dettagli. Genova, Seborga, Lérins, Gerusalemme, Costantinopoli non sono semplici sfondi, ma veri luoghi vivi, resi con cura storica e passione narrativa. Le Crociate, le tensioni tra la Cristianità e l’Oriente, il fragile equilibrio politico dell’epoca emergono con forza, senza mai soffocare la trama romanzata. Il Santo Graal diventa il nucleo simbolico: ritrovato e poi nascosto, perché troppo pericoloso per l’umanità, è al tempo stesso reliquia, mito e monito. Qui il romanzo si avvicina alle leggende arturiane, ma con un ancoraggio più saldo alla storia delle Crociate e alla spiritualità cristiana medievale.
La chiave psicologica: l’uomo, la donna, il sacro
Uno degli aspetti che più mi ha colpito è la profondità psicologica con cui i personaggi sono costruiti. Errico non è un eroe perfetto: è un uomo che sbaglia, soffre, ama, e proprio per questo diventa vicino al lettore moderno. In lui si riflette la tensione di ogni essere umano chiamato a confrontarsi con un destino più grande. Laurenziana, a sua volta, è la personificazione della femminilità che salva, dell’amore che trasfigura e resta oltre la morte. Non solo figura storica, ma simbolo eterno. Il Graal assume anche qui un valore psicologico: non soltanto oggetto sacro, ma specchio dei desideri e dei pericoli dell’animo umano. È la tentazione dell’assoluto, il sogno di possedere Dio, ma anche il monito sulla fragilità dell’uomo di fronte al divino.
L’importanza dell’opera
L’Ordine Templare è importante perché non è né puro romanzo né mera ricostruzione storica: è epica moderna. La sua forza sta nella capacità di parlare a diversi livelli: agli appassionati di storia medievale, agli amanti delle saghe cavalleresche, a chi cerca un racconto d’amore e sacrificio, ma anche a chi vuole riflettere sulla condizione umana e sul rapporto con il mistero. Considerazioni personali
Devo dire che questo romanzo mi è piaciuto molto. Non solo per l’avventura e la coralità dei personaggi, ma per l’intensità emotiva e psicologica che trasmette. Ho amato la figura di Errico, con le sue debolezze e il suo coraggio, ma soprattutto Laurenziana, presenza dolce e luminosa, capace di restare impressa come simbolo eterno di amore e resilienza. La scrittura dell’autore alterna pagine di grande azione a momenti poetici e contemplativi, e proprio questo equilibrio lo rende speciale: è un libro che conquista sia la mente sia il cuore. Alla fine della lettura resta una sensazione rara: quella di aver compiuto un vero viaggio, insieme ai personaggi, dentro la storia e dentro l’animo umano.
Conclusione
L’Ordine Templare è un romanzo che unisce storia, mito, poesia e psicologia in un unico respiro epico. È l’inizio di una saga che proseguirà con I Templari e il Graal e che promette di restare a lungo nella memoria dei lettori. Anyways I've never considered Lemmy as a "privacy" platform so it's not really how or why I ended up here. Most Lemmy instances don't even allow Tor usage, some block VPN usage too, and most require an email to sign up and register. On top of that each Lemmy instance is going to be as private as the instance admin is willing to make it.
