How do I get started if I am in the Apple ecosystem?

Hey there! I’m looking to pirate sports and streaming services that I can’t afford. Could you please explain in simple terms of how to do this on an iPhone, iMac, iPad, and Apple TV? I’m really exhausted and my brain is blank. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

I dont know if it works on apple devices, but you can try to search streamio with torrentio plugin.

What language/culture/origin is your name from? Do you like your name or names from that culture? Have you ever met someone with a same name (either the given or family name)?

(Don't share your real name, obviously)

Okay so, wall of text warning:

My legal name is a Chinese name, three characters.

Family name (one character) is said/written first, then the given name (two characters for me... and I assume for most people).

Its a very interesting name, and overall naming system, each character has meaning, well other than the family name which I don't think it really means anything.

My older brother's first character is the same as mine, only the second character is different. (It's [Family Name] + [Character A] + [Character B], Character A is the same.)

I have never met anyone with my exact name, well to be fair, being in the US made those odds even rarer. I did meet someone with the same family name in a US school, and they also had the same DoB as me, which was very weird coincidence.

But my name is so rare in the US, if it ever got leaked, that's practically a unique identifier.

When I look at my name, idk I kinda feel a sense of antiquity. I have a genology book and the pages are falling apart, I had to scan it and made a .pdf from it. I mean those names are from hundred of years ago, I guess they had to keep remaking/rewriting those books because I doubt something from pre-1800s would've survived till now. It makes modern tech feel so futuristic when I think about it, I mean, that geneology book could potentially live om forever, without any deterioation unlike a book.

But simultaneously, when I look at my name, it kinda reminds me of my parent's emotional abusive and neglectful behaviors. Ugh, idk, feels so conflicted about it. I really wanna ask questions about the past, but we aren't really on speaking-terms anymore.

When people ask my name, it's always just so awkward, since... the pronounciation is totally foreign to them. I kinda wanted to choose an English name for simplicity here in the US, but like... I didn't pick one when I was younger and I think its kinda too late to use one now. Idk what name to even choose.

in reply to 鳳凰院 凶真 (Hououin Kyouma)

My first name is Hebrew, it was supposedly the name of the father of David. My last name is Italian, apparently it was once a derogatory term.

Some Russian units encircled near Dobropillia in Donetsk Oblast, Syrskyi says. Over the past month, Ukrainian forces have been pushing back Russian troops who had advanced 15-20 kilometers (6 miles) toward the strategic Dobropillia–Kramatorsk highway, near the contested city of Pokrovsk.

Ukrainian FPV drone destroys Russian Mi-28N helicopter, military says. The 59th Brigade of the Unmanned Systems Forces destroyed the Russian helicopter near the village of Kotliarivka, in Donetsk Oblast.

Zelensky calls for closing Baltic Sea for Russia over drone incursions. “There is growing evidence that Russia may have used tankers in the Baltic Sea to launch drones — the drones that caused major disruption in Northern Europe,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Record 120-hour power blackout hits Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The ZNPP, the largest nuclear power station in Europe, has been under Russian occupation since March 2022.

‘Confirmation of Kremlin state policy’ — Ukraine slams Russia’s withdrawal from torture prevention convention. “The path Russia has chosen is that of a repressive, murderous state. Its denunciation of the convention only confirms that torture and inhuman treatment are systemic practices of the Kremlin,” Ukraine’s Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said.

Ukrainian specialists join Danish forces for counter-drone drills amid airspace violations. Ukrainian specialists arrived in Denmark on Sept. 29 to join Danish forces in counter-drone exercises following recent reports of unidentified drones violating the Nordic country’s airspace.

‘There are no such things as sanctuaries’ — Ukraine can conduct strikes deep within Russian territory, Kellogg says. Washington authorizes specific instances where Ukraine can carry out long-range strikes within Russia, U.S. Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg said on Sept. 28.

Human cost of Russia’s war

Russian attacks kill 3, injure 76 in Ukraine over past day. The largest number of injuries was reported in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, where a Russian attack wounded 49 people.

General Staff: Russia has lost 1,109,590 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022. The number includes 1,080 casualties that Russian forces suffered over the past day.

International response

Germany to deliver 2 Patriot systems to Ukraine by 2026, Pistorius says. “Russia’s recent attack with more than 580 and over 40 missiles have once again underlined the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s air defense,” German Defense Minister Boris Pistoruis said.

Hungary bans 12 Ukrainian media outlets. Hungary blocked 12 Ukrainian media outlets in response to Kyiv’s earlier ban on several foreign, including Hungarian, publications over Russian narratives, Hungarian Cabinet Minister Gergely Gulyas said on Sept. 29.

Orban says Ukraine ‘is not a sovereign country’ following alleged Hungarian drone incursion. “We will be eager to hear his thoughts on state sovereignty and independence once he has broken free from his dependence on Russian energy, as U.S. President Donald Trump and European partners insisted multiple times,” Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said.

One of the best parts of Cyberpunk (as a theme) is the ubiquitisation of cultures

I'm talking about how pockets and islands of cultures pop up everywhere within these settings, how Cyberpunk as a whole does away with national borders and lets everyone from everywhere and anywhere suffer equally.

And we've kinda' missed the mark on that, as now culture is instead becoming eclectic. We don't have pockets of cultures, we are steadily pushing toward having a single culture, a mass of haphazard associations and little comprehension of meaning.

in reply to latenightnoir

I don’t think we’re heading towards a monoculture. Actually much like Cyberpunk, you’ll find the most striking pockets of unique cultures in small spaces relevant to whatever group is there. Go to a skatepark and you’ll think the people there are talking another language. Go to a concert or rave and you’ll see all kinds of different subcultures and fashion styles depending on what kind of music is playing. Even here on Lemmy you see different cliques and subcultures. There are astrology conferences and Beyblade tournaments and everything in between. Theres also always little pockets of ethnic groups, foreign to where they are, all over the world. I love finding different groups and the things they orbit around and the lingo they develop and the ideas and values they have. They’re not as easy to find as they are in a video game, but they’re out there and it’s a much more rich experience to get to know those people than in a video game.

I can’t describe it well because I’m not an anthropologist, but the changes in the larger zeitgeist over the years I’ve been around seems to be pretty normal too. I don’t think there’ll ever be some kind of monoculture, just that what makes groups different will naturally change over time.

Jeffrey Epstein Helped Broker Israeli Security Agreement

Jeffrey Epstein used his political network and financial resources to help broker a security cooperation agreement between the governments of Israel and Mongolia, according to a trove of leaked emails from former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. This new set of emails between Barak and Epstein has largely been ignored by the mainstream press, but includes crucial new context on Epstein’s operation.

It’s well known that Epstein had personal ties to Israel, including to senior political officials like Barak and Ehud Olmert, and that he donated to organizations like Friends of the IDF. But Epstein’s activities in Mongolia show, for the first time, that he facilitated a deal that led to a security agreement between Israel and other nations.

The leaked emails were released by Handala, a pro-Palestinian hacking group with speculated ties to Iran.

BSD-related communities

BSD-related communities #promo, #bsd #Lemmy,

Linux gets a lot of love there on Fedi, so I think it would be cool if BSD would get some of it too.

For those unaware it's a Unix-like operation system, one of they key differences from Linux is a more permissive license, so PlayStation 4 or MacOS are originally based on it.

There's a list of existing communities:
- !bsd@lemmy.sdf.org (Semi-Active)
- !bsd@programming.dev
- !freebsd@blendit.bsd.cafe
- !freebsd@lemmy.world
- !netbsd@blendit.bsd.cafe
- !netbsd@lemmy.sdf.org
- !openbsd@blendit.bsd.cafe
- !OpenBSD@fedia.io
- !openbsd@lemmy.sdf.org (Semi-Active)

Apparently, there's also a Lemmy instance dedicated to BSD — blendit.bsd.cafe/

Note: No .ml communities, as my instance is defederated from them.

Fitik reshared this.

in reply to DominusOfMegadeus

You can read about it on the FreeBSD website — freebsdfoundation.org/freebsd-…

Over Linux I assume?
It has some unique stuff, like ZFC completely integrated. There's monolithic approach, Linux is just a kernel with a lot of distros, while with bsd kernel, userland and utilities are developed together. Some people say that is also more simple and logical than Linux. In my opinion both are good, it just depends on your use case.

Also most of ppl who use BSD use Linux too from my experience.

Novinarska konferenca Konec10

Vabljeni!

U.K. Jewish institutions say they back two-states – so why aren't they commending Starmer?

Virtually every British Jewish community representative organization claims to support a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians.

There is also cross-party consensus in the British parliament that this is the most viable solution. Yesterday, the British government finally took a step towards making this policy a reality by recognizing a Palestinian state, with clear conditions that ensure Israel's security, including the disarmament of Hamas and working to free the hostages the group still holds in Gaza.

So, on paper, the U.K.'s announcement should be welcomed by all those who claim to support a two-state solution, including the mainstream British Jewish community. And yet instead, it's been met at worst with criticism and condemnations, and at best with silence, perhaps out of fear of being ostracized.

Surely, this Israeli government, one that threatens to occupy and remove Palestinians from Gaza, and one that has already killed tens of thousands and starved hundreds of thousands, isn't reflective of our community and its values. So where is our British Jewish leadership, coming forward to commend Prime Minister Starmer for taking the step we all know is right?

Israel wants to train ChatGPT to be more pro-Israel

The government of Israel has hired a new conservative-aligned firm, Clock Tower X LLC, to create media for Gen Z audiences in a contract worth $6 million.

Clock Tower will even deploy “websites and content to deliver GPT framing results on GPT conversations.” In other words, Clock Tower will create new websites to influence how AI GPT models such as ChatGPT, which are trained on vast amounts of data from every corner of the internet, frame topics and respond to them — all on behalf of Israel.

At least 80 percent of content Clock Tower produces will be “tailored to Gen Z audiences across platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, podcasts, and other relevant digital and broadcast outlets” with a minimum goal of 50 million impressions per month.

Here’s the full text of Trump’s 20-point plan to end Israel’s war on Gaza

  • Gaza will be governed under the temporary transitional governance of a technocratic, apolitical Palestinian committee, responsible for delivering the day-to-day running of public services and municipalities for the people in Gaza. This committee will be made up of qualified Palestinians and international experts, with oversight and supervision by a new international transitional body, the “Board of Peace,” which will be headed and chaired by President Donald J Trump, with other members and heads of State to be announced, including Former Prime Minister Tony Blair. This body will set the framework and handle the funding for the redevelopment of Gaza until such time as the Palestinian Authority has completed its reform program, as outlined in various proposals, including President Trump’s peace plan in 2020 and the Saudi-French proposal, and can securely and effectively take back control of Gaza. This body will call on best international standards to create modern and efficient governance that serves the people of Gaza and is conducive to attracting investment.

...

  • Hamas and other factions agree to not have any role in the governance of Gaza, directly, indirectly, or in any form. All military, terror, and offensive infrastructure, including tunnels and weapon production facilities, will be destroyed and not rebuilt. There will be a process of demilitarisation of Gaza under the supervision of independent monitors, which will include placing weapons permanently beyond use through an agreed process of decommissioning, and supported by an internationally funded buy-back and reintegration program all verified by the independent monitors. New Gaza will be fully committed to building a prosperous economy and to peaceful coexistence with their neighbours.

Is it me or this plan is just unhinged? Not just politically bad, or imbalanced, or whatever. But actually fantastical, not meant for implementation. In fact I can't think of anyone who'd accept it, not the zionists either. It seems headline-driven policy. It's just intended to make noise.

At least Oslo was shitty but conceivably workable for some values of workable.

This is talking about tariffs and SEZs in the middle of rubble.

what's a good phone?

Hey there! i currently have a Samsung Galaxy A55 and i want to try one of the privacy focused phones. But idk which is the best i could try.

My findings:
- Fairphone with /e/OS, but ive heard /e/OS is apparantly not that secure.
- Google Pixel with GrapheneOS, but with this one I still need to buy from Google.
- Linux phones, but I'm concerend they dont support all the apps i want to use.

that being said, can you use MicroG instead of Google Services for ALL apps? or does it only work for things like Revanced?

edit:

i also use a Samsung smartwatch with Google Wallet so would this still be possible with an alternate OS?

Questa voce è stata modificata (1 mese fa)

don't like this

in reply to blinfabian

For linux phones can't you use waydroid which gets you support for all android apps? Pls don't quote me on this though.

I guess apps that require Google play services won't work.

in reply to blinfabian

I wish there was a Pixel with an SD card slot. That is the main reason I'm still, grudgingly, on Samsung.

Worse still, they were among the first to criticise their own paid up members as antisemetic, for calling out the genocide in Gaza. In my finest British vernacular, what a bunch of pathetic twats. [Just one persons very dissatisfied and frustrated views]

I wouldn’t be surprised if labour leader and current prime minister believed in the Zionist dogma that Palestine should be recognized in the sense that Israel should always reserve the “right” to restrict power, water and trade, and enact cruel and unusual collective punishment whenever they see fit

Recommendations for audio production software?

I have literally zero experience with creating audio, but I want to try something new for me.

I know most people who are "properly" into music production are just using a Mac, because it just works and where a lot of the software is available.

Thing is, I have zero expectations.
I don't need a lot of features, plug-ins, and whatever. Most stuff will probably just be fine for me.

Heck, I don't even know what I need in the first place to get a full "stack" of audio production software.

For the start, I'd prefer something simple.
Mostly just something where I can arrange a few recorded audio tracks onto each other and maybe edit them a bit.
Something where I can record the tracks with my microphone (and some time later maybe an input device like a piano keyboard, e-guitar, etc.) and listen them at the same time, preferably in the same program.

What are your experiences with making music on Linux?
What software would you recommend?

I have been on the same quest. I have used Ableton on mac/windows and I’m eyeing Bitwig. I tried Ardour for a little bit, but never gelled with it. Ardour would probably be fine if I did some effort on learning the interface, but I didnt find it that intuitive.

And there it is, an oppressive weapon camouflaged as a nicely packaged present. What I seem to realise is our "dependancy" on the governments perspective - it's like they already speak the ultimate truth, testing the limits of what is democracy.

Is it really right to be weaponising children and minors into essentially constructing a totalitarian regime? Because, in my perspective they are using our young people as human shields to justify their hideous acts against humanity.

It is best not to forget who's the actual enemy. Because, in the future no one will be safe - no matter the age.

Pidgin 3.0 Experimental 4 (2.93.0) has been released!

We are ecstatic to announce that we have released the fourth experimental version of Pidgin 3.0!!! This is a pre alpha release with an official version number of 2.93.0. We will continue releasing in this fashion until we are ready for 3.0.0 which will be the release we consider ready for end users.

The release can be found on SourceForge and should show up on Flathub Beta shortly.

If you don’t want to use the Flathub Beta method, there are build instructions in the README for building a flatpak locally or installing into a meson devenv. Both methods avoid installing directly to your OS installation which is the preferred method as there is no easy way to uninstall.

About

Just like the previous experimental releases, this is a timed release. It is a snapshot of what we currently have and is something we think other tinkerers and developers may want to start playing with, but again, it is not meant for end users.

Most things are not implemented, the user interface has not been polished at all, and there are so so many bugs. As such we are asking that packagers please do not package this for your users yet as the potential support requests will be too much for us to handle at this time.

There's a number of things that unfortunately went unfinished for this release so you may notice more bugs than previous experimental releases. But like usual, there's still been plenty of progress for everyone to check out!

Looking forward, Experimental 5 is scheduled for 2025-12-31 and will have a version number of 2.94.0.

We have a bunch of tickets entered for Experimental 5, and you can keep an eye on the Burndown Chart for Experimental 5 to stay informed. As always, priorities and possibilities can and will change, so even if something is listed for this release that doesn’t mean it will be in the release until it’s actually completed.

If you would like monthly updates, be sure to check out the #state-of-the-bird posts!

Highlights

We have a bunch of highlights this release, but some are hard to show in text, but we'll do our best!

Developer Migration Guide

We have started the huge task of describing how to migrate code from Purple 2 to Purple 3. That document is available at docs.imfreedom.org/purple3/migrating.html.

This is for migration only. We're still looking at doing some sort of compatibility layer, but we don't want to put a lot of time into that until we're much more confident in the APIs not changing. We are also looking to do an architecture document as well that will explain some of the finer details of the APIs.

Backends

Many of our data sources need to be persisted when the program isn't running. We've done this a number of ways over the years, but in this release we have created a new pattern of using backends to abstract this out.

For example, a user interface can tell Purple.ConversationManager to not persist conversations or to persist them in a SQLite database using Purple.ConversationManagerSeagullBackend. Many more of these will be popping up in the future for the other managers.

Conversation Persistence

As mentioned above Purple now keeps track of your open conversations assuming the conversation manager was told to use a backend that persists data which Pidgin does by default.

This means you no longer have to add a channel to your contact list and tell it to auto join, it will just automatically happen for all conversations (dms, group dms, channel, etc) that were still open when you closed the program which matches the behavior of many modern clients.

New Application Icon

The one and only Hykle Bons has come out of retirement to create a new application icon for Pidgin 3 which you can see below. If you have any comments regarding it, there is a post for that over here.

Color Scheme Preference

You can finally chose to have Pidgin follow the system theme or force it into light or dark mode!
