A1: Hello! I am Matt, a cosplayer and maker in the Chicago area. This week was DRAGON CON. I brought two costumes and zero wigs, and had a fantastic time. The highlights of the weekend were the Cosmere photo shoot, the Tolkien photo shoot, and meeting up with the person who commissioned me to build the Arwen crown and the Aragorn bracers. I attended a ton of panels, including one about building fursuits. I don't necessarily plan on building one per se, but many of the techniques this community have developed are applicable to other sorts of costumes.

Hace poco descubrí (por culpa de @fanta, creo) la página Mundo Mendo. Y con ella redescubrí Ghost, que es un CMS que ya conocía, aunque no le había hecho mucho caso.
Me flipé, me hice un Ghost y hasta pagué la versión más barata para tener mi propia newsletter.
Pero no me terminaba de convencer. Tiene cosas básicas que son de pago, como las analíticas o el poder cambiar de plantilla.
Así que, como tenía mi portfolio hecho con Astro todavía en su repo, me he dicho "vamos a seguir".
Porque luego Ghost tiene más problemas. Las suscripciones de pago también son de una capa más cara. Y de momento sólo gestionan los pagos con Stripe, que como ya hemos visto se ha subido a la ola de la censura.
Así que me he liado la manta a la cabeza y voy a migrar mi página de Astro a NextJS y me voy a hacer la newsletter a mano, con Supabase. Y luego voy a montarme mi sistema de suscripciones con los métodos de pago que yo quiera. Y con casinos. Y con furcias.

A hacker has broken into Nexar, a popular dashcam company that pitches its users’ dashcams as “virtual CCTV cameras” around the world that other people can buy images from, and accessed a database of terabytes of video recordings taken from cameras in drivers’ cars. The videos obtained by the hacker and shared with 404 Media capture people clearly unaware that a third party may be watching or listening in. A parent in a car soothing a baby. A man whistling along to the radio. Another person on a Facetime call. One appears to show a driver heading towards the entrance of the CIA’s headquarters. Other images, which are publicly available in a map that Nexar publishes online, show drivers around sensitive Department of Defense locations.The hacker also found a list of companies and agencies that may have interacted with Nexar’s data business, which sells access to blurred images captured by the cameras and other related data. This can include monitoring the same location captured by Nexar’s cameras over time, and lets clients “explore the physical world and gain insights like never before,” and use its virtual CCTV cameras “to monitor specific points of interest,” according to Nexar’s website.

Yeah, I've also been thinking about that. Like why wait until now? Meanwhile, having been involved in American unions (not sure how different European ones would be), I know that strikes take a long time to organize because striking can impose a very steep cost to workers. It takes a lot of one-on-one conversations to build the social networks and collective power. And many people have radicalized in the past two years and radicalization takes some time. I'm really appalled how many of my colleagues don't seem to have radicalized very much. I myself shed quite a lot of liberal indoctrination since Oct 7 despite having identified as an anarchist since 2020.
Yeah, they'd better get ready to strike. Even if they fail this time, next time they may be able to call a strike faster. For example, UC grad student workers passed the strike authorization vote for Palestine in spring 2024 so quickly because the memory of the 2022 strike was still fresh, though a court ruled that the strike for Palestine is illegal and I heard reports of union leadership watering down the demands.
