I wish more people discussed what an independent Scotland would look like. For me, I'd like to rejoin the EU and see more people come to live and work here. Next I want land and property ownership to be changed. Let's get rid of the blight of second home ownership. Same for foreign ownership of vast tracts of land used for the benefit of a tiny minority. What about a rejection of foreign press and political parties in Scotland. These are all normal choices made by independent nations.
the objectives outlined by both of you are in no way objectionable, but the importance of independence is not what decisions will be made following independence but that we have the ability to make those decisions and have the powers to put them into effect.
With regard to Charlie, I hope that, following a majority of independence supporting parties, if Westminster doesn’t respond he should use his constitutional responsibility as head of state to force their hand.
Agreed in principle although in practice some of them are either closely related (because they affect campaigning, for example) or difficult to change once established (an independent Scotland which is a monarchy, for example). SNP leadership was then (2008?) "Independence and don't change ANYTHING else". That's precisely why I cane up with the slogan "Independence that changes nothing is worth nothing". Why should people vote for #ScottishIndependence — which is a risk — if you can't offer then a vision of a significantly better future? But no. Keep the monarchy, keep the lairds, keep the pound, keep NATO, nothing will change, nothing will be better.
I beg to differ. It was not revolutionary true, but laid out a path to change. Revolution and complete disruption will never win over the majority we need.
we have to be extremely careful not to define the form that the new country will take. Countries are malleable- they change and mutate, usually as a result of democracy. If we present a fully thought through, organised, cut and dried proposal for the new independent country you avoid the need for an election in the new country. Constitutional decisions are not policy decisions. You also alienate those who do not agree with your vision of the new country.
The only thing we need to have absolutely clear is independence and membership of the EU. Everything else including decisions like whether we should have two chambers or one, whether we should have a head of state, and how elections will be run must be left for decision by the new independent country not formulated beforehand .

I don't mind the architecture. I remember at the time the BBC was heavily pushing to have Parliament based in Glasgow where they had their studios having just closed their offices in Edinburgh's Queen Street. Whether Parliament in Glasgow or Edinburgh, I am heavily in favour of shifting democracy away from central belt and having much more committee meetings and departments based all around Scotland.
I have some assorted white clothes, mostly panties, that long ago have lost the whiteness and look sad and crummy now. regular washing with these new types of "oxy" whiteners didn't help. hanging in the sun (whatever little there is) while soaped didn't help. so I decided to try old-fashioned bleach (as in chlorine) and if it damaged the clothes, so be it, wasn't using them anyway.
left the lot soaking in warm water + chlorine for ca. 90min, then washed them in the washing maschine. the result was:
- a small amount of them is now distinctly whiter, especially synthetics - another small amount wasn't significantly affected - and the majority of them got pink stains.
among the pink category, some got exactly the elastic band uniformly pinker, while others (like a white bra I used to like) got random stains across the surface.

I have a linux server, someone (nontechnicaly) has an android phone and needs a VPN. What's the best way today? Just install openvpn on my server? Android OS can support that sort of VPN right?
No, don't recommend me VPN companies, it has to be self-hosted.
@wmd @djh is it easier to set up for non-technical people? I need to give written instructions over email/text. I'm unable to look at (presumable) old random android phone.
@djh I think that should be pretty simple, especially if you can create the QR code with the configuration for them. The wireguard app exists in both the play store and in f-droid. When you open it, there is a plus on the right bottom, when you click it one of the options is 'scan qr code', after you scanned it, the app is configured for that tunnel.
Probably best to try it out and see if it's friendly enough for your use case though. don't recall the openvpn app, so can't compare.
@djh There's a benefit that wireguard is intrinsically simpler, there's less configuration options, so less to to think about when dealing with them. That said, it also doesn't really log much at all, which makes debugging a bit trickier when things do break, but still less to break.
I use and love Wireguard for several things. It's much, much easier to setup than OpenVPN. Also, the codebase is much smaller (less likely to have bugs / vulnerabilities).

yes, that will work fine. use the official openvpn app, not any third-party thing. keep in mind their traffic and yours will appear to come from the same place, which would have legal implications in some situations, so only do this with someone you trust.
I suspect that the $64,000 question is "how important is it that you keep the key generation infrastructure private". If it is, then you have that option with OpenVPN, and clients are widely available and easy to install (it's what I've tended to use). If it's not, and you want to keep setup as minimal as possible, then one of the Wireguard setups already suggested) may be a better option. I can't comment on any gotchas there though - never tried it.
@SomeoneElse i will only have exactly one person using this as a VPN client to tunnel (all) their network access through this server. So this only needs to be set up once

Do you know about Fado? I didn't until I started searching for alternative music from queer artists and found Fado Bicha. So the Fado is a portuguese traditional genre which blends melanchonic themes with a strong vocal presence, which is traditionally female.
So they said what, why can't we sing Fado, we've got the skills, and we sure have stuff to say, queer people have it and we want to be represented in the traditional music genres!
And they do it! I love them! I'm all about theatrical music, I'm a bit of drama queer myself, but their voice perfectly carries all the struggles and harshness of life for queer people, I feel the need to sing with them to cathartically expel all the pain and frustrations.
And I'm in a phase of high distrust of men, so they are quite good.

I laugh every time I see a human shaped mechatronic body carefully walk like it is trying not to poop itself. I understand some reasons why their gaits are shaped like that and yes, they're walking which is a hard won success no matter the gait. That said, it feels like we're making fundamental errors in approaches that end up that way. We're leaving out something important that could lead to organic-ish, human style walking and running.

#Russia media speak a lot about “water blockade of Donbas” but there was no actual “blockade” by #Ukraine - water was supplied to the occupied Donetsk until Russian artillery damaged the Siversky Donets-Donbas pipeline in 2022. Russians were so certain of fast conquest of all Donbas they didn’t care - they just assumed whatever they destroy, they will be able to rebuild after “liberation”. Instead, they cut the whole region, including towns of Donetsk and Mariupol, from fresh water, resulting in self-inflicted humanitarian disaster.
Also in 2022 Russia however also destroyed the main pumping station of Ukrainian #Mykolaiv - and its residents also didn’t have running water since. The town has rebuilt it and now, for the first time in three years, running water returned to Mykolaiv.

I wasn’t very familiar with Roger Casement, a figure of Irish history who was a part of the Easter Uprising in the 1910s, smeared by the British government for being gay, and ultimately executed for both.
Turns out there’s a queer-owned and queer-friendly Irish pub in the Mission called Casements. My friend Tanya Wischerath, who painted the Living Lesbian Legends mural in the Castro, recently completed a mural of Roger Casement on the patio of this bar; it is located between her murals of Dolores O’Riordan of the Cranberries and Sinead O’Connor.
Today there was a big event at Casements to celebrate that Roger Casement will be commemorated with a sidewalk plaque as part of the Castro Honor Walk. I went to support Tanya and also my friend Bobby who created the Modern Queer Tarot with art by Tanya — Casement is the figure on their deck’s Five of Swords card.

The military junta-run state proposed the ban in 2024 announcing a ban on homosexual acts, but it was never outlawed.
Now law, issued by the transitional parliament introduces prison terms of two to five years and fines for those convicted of same-sex relations.
Foreign nationals found guilty under the law will also face deportation.
Justice Minister Edasso Rodrigue Bayala said on national broadcaster RTB: “The law provides for a prison sentence of between two and five years as well as fines.”
He continued: “If a person is a perpetrator of homosexual or similar practices, all the bizarre behaviour, they will go before the judge.”
You can not outlaw something that is natural, people can not change who they are.
The government must not take asylum rights from international students – LGBTQI+ lives are at stake
This government recently announced a ‘crackdown’ on international students’ rights to claim asylum, even suggesting that it might defund universities if students claim asylum. This is a deeply concerning turn, that scapegoats international students, would shift border enforcement responsibilities onto universities, and one that will put people at risk of harm.
The “problem” the government claims to be addressing is people entering the UK as students and later claiming asylum. Responding to pressure from the increasingly racist and anti-migrant rhetoric in the media, the government is looking to drive down the number of people claiming asylum. This would set a really worrying precedent.
According to The Times, the Home Office justification for this policy is that some people are ‘using the student route to make claims for humanitarian protection when circumstances in their country have not changed’. But this is a dangerous oversimplification.
Asylum can be granted for many reasons – including someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. A country does not have to become unsafe for it to become unsafe for an individual.
Take, for example, a gay man from Pakistan who came to the UK to study. After his family discovered his sexual orientation, he received death threats. Another gay man from China was cut off financially after coming out, forcing him to leave his course and fear violence if he returned home. Others have faced threats of forced marriage after being outed.
These are people facing real danger and the government must not ignore this reality or attempt to deny people the protection they deserve.
This cannot be allowed. Lives are at stake.
Government urged to hold parliamentary debate on EHRC’s new code of practice
LGBTQ groups have called on the UK government to table a debate regarding the updates to the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s (EHRC) single-sex code of practice.
More than 80 organisations and groups signed a joint letter calling on equalities minister Bridget Phillipson to stage a “meaningful debate” once the revamped guidance had been published.
The UK’s equality watchdog proposed updates to its Code of Practice on Services, Public Functions and Associations, in April, shortly after the Supreme Court ruled on the definitions of “woman” and “sex” in the 2010 Equality Act.
Updates suggested by the EHRC would effectively exclude trans people from gendered spaces consistent with their gender identity, including toilets, changing rooms and even possibly book clubs. In some cases, transgender men and women could be barred from spaces consistent with their birth sex, too.
I dont think this will happen, as this current government has abandoned the LGBT Community.
UK woman found guilty of sexual assault for failing to disclose she was trans
A 21-year-old trans woman, Ciara Watkin, has been found guilty of sexual assault after a court heard she did not tell the man she was dating that she was not assigned female at birth.
The BBC reports that Ciara Watkin told the man she was on her period to stop him finding out she had not yet had gender confirmation surgery. The court heard that she had identified as female and used the name Ciara since the age of 13.
Prosecutors argued that the man was unable to make “informed consent”, after he claimed he wouldn’t have had sexual contact with Watkin had he known she was trans.
When Watkin later revealed that information, the man filed a complaint with police telling officers had he known, he would not have met her as he did “not swing that way”.
The jury reached a guilty verdict after just one hour of deliberations following a two-day trial. She will be sentenced on 10 October and was ordered to sign the sex offenders register within three days.
This could be a campaign by the right wing to match the narrative that trans people are just convicted sex offenders.
