Hackers Threaten to Submit Artists' Data to AI Models If Art Site Doesn't Pay Up
An old school ransomware attack has a new twist: threatening to feed data to AI companies so it’ll be added to LLM datasets.
Artists&Clients is a website that connects independent artists with interested clients. Around August 30, a message appeared on Artists&Clients attributed to the ransomware group LunaLock. “We have breached the website Artists&Clients to steal and encrypt all its data,” the message on the site said, according to screenshots taken before the site went down on Tuesday. “If you are a user of this website, you are urged to contact the owners and insist that they pay our ransom. If this ransom is not paid, we will release all data publicly on this Tor site, including source code and personal data of users. Additionally, we will submit all artwork to AI companies to be added to training datasets.”
LunaLock promised to delete the stolen data and allow users to decrypt their files if the site’s owner paid a $50,000 ransom. “Payment is accepted in either Bitcoin or Monero,” the notice put on the site by the hackers said. The ransom note included a countdown timer that gave the site’s owners several days to cough up the cash. “If you do not pay, all files will be leaked, including personal user data. This may cause you to be subject to fines and penalties under the GDPR and other laws.”
Most of LunaLock’s threat is standard language for a ransomware attack. What’s new is the explicit threat to give the site’s data—which includes the unique artwork and information of its users—to AI companies. “This is the first time I see a threat actor use training AI models as part of their extortion tactic,” Tammy Harper, a senior threat intelligence researcher at the cyber security company Flare, told 404 Media. “Before this it was kind of an assumption that victim data could end up being shared through AI models. Especially if the groups use it to find leverage and process the data to calculate ransom amounts.”
Harper said that this kind of threat could be effective against artists. “It’s a very sensitive subject for this type of victim (an art marketplace.) LunaLock is definitely using and hoping for the clients and artists of the victim to pressure them into paying the ransom.” playlist.megaphone.fm?p=TBIEA2… It’s unclear how LunaLock would get the artistic data to AI companiesOf course, it might be as simple as setting up an independent website full of the data on the open web and waiting for one of the LLMs crawlers to come and devour the information. Or just starting a chat with the companies’ respective chatbots and uploading the images, depending on each company’s policy on how they train their AIs based on user uploads.
As of this writing, Artists&Clients is down and attempts to reach it trigger a Cloudflare error. But users and cyber security accounts are sharing screenshots of the ransomware note on social media. Google also indexed the ransom note and as of writing, it appears in the description of the site when you look it up in the search engine.
Artists&Clients did not respond to 404 Media’s request for a comment.

Dopo infinite diatribe tra gli appassionati si è giunti alla sua esatta identificazione. Arriva dall’Argentina, Bolivia, Perù, ama le altitudini i terreni aridi e il caldo. È segnalata in Italia solo in Sicilia e a Ventimiglia. Si chiama Parasenegalia Visco o più comunemente Acacia Visco. Del grande Gelso che si affaccia alla finestra dell’aula sapevo molte cose imparate sul libro scolastico. Sempre da quelle parti, mi appassionava per la forza che esprimeva, una pianta dal fogliame grigio-argenteo e dai fiori giallo limone, arrampicata a strapiombo, cresciuta in una crepa del Cavalcavia ferroviario, con vista sulle terme romane, anche lei innominata. Il suo nome era Nicotiana glauca. Ama le macerie e i muri vive di niente. Ho occupato crescendo e diventando adulta e ormai con i capelli bianchi, di cercare di dare un nome alle piante anche le più umili che erroneamente si chiamano erbacce. Sono diventate così care amiche che mi hanno raccontato le loro storie che sono racchiuse nei loro nomi botanici, che a saperle leggere ci forniscono la loro esatta identità.

@dillyd I thought I had taken a snapshot but now I can’t find it, but I from what I remember I see I have a reply because there’s a 1 next to the reply icon arrow. Then when I click in my post to see it nothing is there. This also happens on favored and boosts when I click to see who did it but it says it doesn’t exist.
@dillyd All of your explanations make sense - it could have have been undone or deleted (although for some reason I thought I eliminated that possibility). I didn’t think about people or keywords I have muted so that’s also a possible explanation.
@dillyd I started muting people before I learned about muting boosts. There are people I follow that boost a lot and I found it overwhelming. Now I can see their posts and not have to scroll through all of their boosts, which is an amazing feature.

Una domanda per scrittori... Leggendo il libro di Stephen King (On Writing) ho appena letto che in passato ha ricopiato (e anche modificato o esteso) alcuni testi.
è vero che facendo un po' di pratica con il copywriting si può capire come gli autori scrivono i loro romanzi e la loro stile di scrittura?
Il copywriting è lontanissimo dalla scrittura creativa. Un copywriter scrive per vendere, per cui ti interessa studiarlo se vuoi andare a scrivere sales pages, landing, email, post sui social e dintorni in cui pubblicizzi un prodotto o servizio. Nobilissima arte, ma non molto utile per la narrativa.
Penso che riceverai risposte diversissime. Mia sorella scrive narrativa (ha vinto premio Amazon Storyteller l'anno scorso, tra un mesetto pubblica un altro libro con un importante editore nel suo campo). Lei ha studiato dei corsi di scrittura e ha fatto pratica con qualche racconto, ma ha iniziato quasi subito a lavorare al romanzo e poi ci ha fatto tanto editing insieme a un professionista.
Ah ok, ora ha più senso. Per me è abbastanza inutile, è un consiglio che davano decine di anni fa, non l'ho più sentito. Studiati a fondo dei libri ben scritti, quello sì, ma copiarli non credo ti svolti la vita.
@scaglio Mi permetto di aggiungere: se vuoi farlo per vivere... non farlo. A meno che non scrivi manualistica tecnica o sei un drago del self publishing, forse ce la fa lo 0,1% a vivere di narrativa.
