La giusta considerazione che
"non ci si può aspettare che la maggioranza delle persone abbia competenze per fare self-hosting"
andrebbe fatta seguire da un invito ad affrontare il problema in modo adeguato ai tempi
quando mancava la competenza per usare stand-alone mainframes il modo di affrontare il problema di organizzazioni europee che ancora gestiscono il digitale in modo autonomo potrebbe offrire qualche utile indizio
ma non se ne è mai saputo nulla 🙁(

Opera AI sostituisce Aria: cosa cambia nei browser della famiglia Opera
Opera ha completato il rilascio di Opera AI su tutti i suoi browser desktop, sostituendo definitivamente Aria, il precedente assistente virtuale. La novità riguarda Opera One, Opera GX (la versione per gamer) e Opera Air, e porta con sé un’interfaccia ricostruita da zero e qualche funzione in più.
Cosa c’è di nuovo
L’assistente si presenta con un pannello laterale dedicato invece di comparire sopra le pagine aperte e, secondo Opera, è più veloce del 20% nelle risposte rispetto alla versione precedente. Funziona senza bisogno di account ed è gratuito. Opera AI si basa sull’infrastruttura Composer, che può accedere a più di 2000 modelli linguistici diversi tra cui GPT di OpenAI e Gemini di Google.
Una delle caratteristiche più interessanti è la comprensione del contesto: Opera AI può analizzare la pagina che stai visitando o addirittura un intero gruppo di schede, permettendo di fare riassunti, confronti o ricerche contestuali.
Su YouTube, ad esempio, la promessa è quella di riuscire a capire il contenuto dei video e a trovare passaggi specifici senza doverli guardare per intero.
Funzioni aggiuntive
Tra le altre novità troviamo l’input e l’output vocale (utile per chi preferisce dettare o farsi leggere le risposte), l’analisi di file caricati come PDF, fogli di calcolo, video o audio, e la possibilità di generare sfondi per desktop e mobile tramite intelligenza artificiale.
Dal punto di vista della privacy, Opera AI non accede automaticamente ai contenuti delle pagine: bisogna abilitare manualmente l’accesso al contesto prima di iniziare una conversazione, e si può disattivare in qualsiasi momento. Il browser non invia la cronologia generale di navigazione all’assistente, limitandosi alla pagina corrente quando richiesto.
Tuttavia, è sempre bene ricordarlo, il progetto non è né comunitario né open source.
Come riporta il blog ufficiale, tutte queste funzioni possono essere disabilitate parzialmente o completamente dalle impostazioni, per chi preferisce un’esperienza più tradizionale.

Following on the heels of ssh(1) yesterday, today's #FreeSoftwareAdvent is rsync(1).
It's one of the key elements in my podcast listening (more on that to come later this month), where my podcatcher pulls down podcasts into a backlog tree structure, and I rsync the whole thing to my phone for listening. It also undergirds my blog deployment, building in Nikola (still gotta find some time to switch that to my custom Makefile driven build process) and then rsync'ing the output/ tree up to my web-server.
And last night our teen wanted our family photo website content's pictures for a school project, so I was able to rsync the latest copy of them to a backup USB drive that he could browse offline.
It's reliable and does a particular job (keeping two directory trees in sync) very well. Yes, ZFS send/receive is more efficient if both sides support it and they're whole datasets, but that's not always the case.
Also, since I use bash as my shell, the "^" substitution makes it easy to issue something like
$ rsync -n -avr $SRC $DEST
and if it looks good, use
$ ^-n
to remove the dry-run flag and run it for real.
