🇷🇺🛢 #Russia's Ryazan oil refinery has suspended operations after an attack by Ukrainian drones late last week, Reuters reports.
#News reports coming on from DeadBirdSite that #ElonMusk is apparently upset that people are calling #Tesla #ElectricVehicles "#Swasticars", after his open and flagrant use of #NeoNazi rhetoric and the #Nazi salute at Trump's inauguration last week.
The bigger question... Can we make #Swasticar the new trending hashtag for talking about #Teslas on the #Fediverse?
@RustyFreewheel
That really doesn't mean anything. What the Chinese government (not simply "the Chinese") wanted at the time was for Japan to stop aggressing upon them and committing genocide against their people: this was the Asian theater of the Holocaust, in which millions of Chinese people were murdered, and was part of the lead up to Pearl Harbor.
Rolling forward, the current Chinese government is very corporatist, very much treats the people as assets in some sort of capital gains scheme, where the state and its wild conservative values are Supreme, high-ranking members of the party rake in profits, and the individual is simply subject to them. This is the same as in North Korea, which is also a fascist adjacent government.
Remember that very few of the governments who called themselves communist actually embraced communist ideals. These people are running their countries on ideologies that are much closer to fascism.
It doesn't mean anything in the sense that Stalin also had massive losses in World War II, and that his ideology was similar enough to Hitler's that people thought they might be able to compromise. Keeping mind also that the Chinese government that primarily fought against the Japanese was not the communists, they were rebel forces in the western part of the country: the group that fought against the Japanese were "Nationalists", much more close to fascists, who the Communists were fighting against.
Since then, the "Communists" have taken over mainland china, had the Maoist revolution, and then decades have passed in which they embraced capitalism as a method of empowering and enriching the party. What they have right now is much more similar to fascism than it is any sort of communist ideology, just as the North Korean government is effectively a fascist one.
People can have the same ideology and still fight. Fascist fight each other constantly over which group is superior.
@RustyFreewheel
I feel like you are altering the context of what I'm saying to the point it's hard to believe you aren't doing it on purpose.
The question was how Chinese government could support fascism when the fascists committed genocide against their people in the 30s, and I am saying that, in both the 1940s and today, both the Russian and Chinese governments were and are close enough to fascism to resemble it. Fascists have compatible belief structures in that they believe in rule by the strong and the supremacy of their races, but they inevitably conflict because they disagree on who that is that should be in charge.
So yes, it is irrelevant how many Russians and Chinese died in wars with fascist aggressors, or even how many of their own people died because of their own fascist movements: that doesn't make them any less fascist.
I quoted you directly, you wrote Chinese participation in WW2 "really doesn't mean anything". I posit that Chinese people are just as deserving of empathy as Americans. History shows that most often it has been young, working class men that are the victims of ideologues and oligarchs.
Meanwhile the World watches as the USA President threatens to invade Canada, Greenland, Mexico and Panama. The USA rhetoric against other nations while pervasive is hypocritical. The USA has a long history of Slavery, medical experimentation on people of colour, Racial Segregation and interference in the governance of other countries.
I suspect that the Chinese Government, possibly in response to the 'land of freedom' imposing exorbitant tariffs, may at some time decide they have no interest in making swasticars for Heir Musk and will repurpose the Shanghai factory and who could blame them.

fantastic article about the #DeepSeek brouhaha with gems like this that shows why true innovators make do with what they have:
stratechery.com/2025/deepseek-…
❝ So was this a violation of the chip ban?
Nope. H100s were prohibited by the chip ban, but not H800s. Everyone assumed that training leading edge models required more interchip memory bandwidth, but that is exactly what DeepSeek optimized both their model structure and infrastructure around.❞
seams the 1990s #AI team went retro in coding… 🧵
DeepSeek FAQ
DeepSeek has completely upended people’s expectations for AI and competition with China. What is it, and why does it matter?Stratechery by Ben Thompson
which brings me to this:
❝ R1 undoes the o1 mythology in a couple of important ways. First, […] it exists. OpenAI does not have some sort of special sauce that can’t be replicated. Second, R1 — like all of DeepSeek’s models — has open weights (the problem with saying “open source” is that we don’t have the data that went into creating it). This means that instead of paying OpenAI to get reasoning, you can run R1 on the server of your choice, or even locally, at dramatically lower cost.❞
🧵
YOU CANNOT OPTIMIZE ANY SOFTWARE FOR YOUR DATA UNLESS YOU CONTROL IT. that’s why you need to have that software running on your own computers/servers.
there is no omniscience.
there is no such thing as a brain, person, computer, robot, god that knows it all. not even the judeo-christian-islamic god knows it all. just read damn GENESIS which is canonic for the 3 religions.
so an all-knowing #AI is bullshit techbro smoke and mirrors. it’s a 100 billion dollars article of faith… 🧵

If Elon Musk wants to cut $2t from the US federal budget, there's a pretty straightforward way to get there - just eliminate all the beltway bandits who overcharge Uncle Sucker for everything from pharmaceuticals to roadworks to (of course) rockets, and then make the rich pay their taxes.
