First time i've ever forgotten to do this in many decades of assembling PC's.
I do wonder if I really should be in charge of complex equipment 😁
The image shows a transparent plastic package containing a detailed, intricately designed object. The object is square-shaped with rounded corners and features a complex, white, floral pattern that covers its surface. The design includes fine, delicate lines and shapes, resembling leaves and branches, creating a lace-like effect. The object is encased in a clear plastic bag with an orange tab at the top, suggesting it is new or for sale. The background is a dark, textured surface, possibly a table or mat, which contrasts with the light-colored object. The object appears to be made of a translucent material, possibly resin or acrylic, and is slightly reflective. The text "WORLD" is visible in red on the package, and there are some indistinct letters and numbers, including "P" and "b," on the package.

A shift away from AI rulemaking
IT'S MONDAY, AND THAT MEANS DIGITAL POLITICS. I'm Mark Scott, and hope to see some of you at the tech policy meet-up I'm co-hosting in Brussels on May 15. I also have my first meeting of Ofcom's Online Information Advisory Committee on May 16 — wish me luck!
— The drive to regulate artificial intelligence has given way to a desire to harness the emerging technology for economic benefit and national security.
— India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire in a quickly escalating regional conflict. That didn't stop waves of disinformation from spreading on social media.
— Platforms, citizens and governments should be responsible for creating a healthy digital environment, according to a global survey. But companies are more responsible than others for combating hateful online speech.
Let's get started:

What’s in a Washer?
Some things are so common you forget about them. How often do you think about an ordinary resistor, for example? Yet if you have a bad resistor, you’ll find it can be a big problem. Plus, how can you really understand electronics if you don’t know all the subtle details of a resistor? In the mechanical world, you could make the same arguments about the washer, and [New Mind] is ready to explain the history and the gory details of using washers in a recent video that you can see below.
The simple answer is that washers allow a bolt to fit in a hole otherwise too large, but that’s only a small part of the story. Technically, what you are really doing is distributing the load of a threaded fastener. However, washers can also act as spacers or springs. Some washers can lock, and some indicate various things like wear or preloading conditions.
Plain washers have a surprising number of secondary functions. Spring washers, including Belleville washers, help prevent fasteners from loosening over time. Wave washers look — well — wavy. They provide precise force against the bolt for preloading. Locking washers are also made to prevent fasteners from loosening, but use teeth or stops instead of springs.
There are plenty of standards, of course, that mostly match up. Mostly.
If you like knowing about odd washers, you might also want to know about the bolts that pass through them.

So my options are either flying (brrrr) or taking a detour via Sweden (changing trains at Sundvall 4 a.m., brrr) or staying over night in Narvik (do that already on way North) or Mo i Rana.
Going by skip is too expensive and driving too tiring/expensive.

What genocide?
Israel has formally requested the International Criminal Court (#ICC) to withdraw arrest warrants for #Netanyahu and ex Defence Minister #Gallant, citing the court's lack of jurisdiction and denying war crimes in Gaza. The request, submitted on May 9, 2025, also asks for a suspension of the ICC’s investigation into alleged atrocity crimes in the Palestinian Territories.
The warrants were initially issued on November 21, 2024, and an arrest warrant for Hamas leader Ibrahim al-Masri was withdrawn in February 2025. The ICC's appeals chamber had previously ordered a review of Israel's objections concerning jurisdiction in April 2025.

The last 2 paragraphs from that article are a glimpse into an heart of pure evil:
"Today, that customer support channel is hiring again: CEO Siemiatkowski said Klarna has two new agents acting as freelance customer support. It’s also piloting an “Uber type of setup” that lets the workers choose their own schedules and work from anywhere in Sweden, where Klarna is based, at pay starting at 400 Swedish krona ($41.17). Some of these agents, Siemiatkowski said, could even be customers.
“We also know there are tons of Klarna users that are very passionate about our company and would enjoy working for us,” he told Bloomberg."

Simple Blogging Tips And Insights Every Blogger Needs To Know
Occasionally, I receive questions or comments about blogging and social media that inspire me to share key insights with my readers. Here are three recent examples of those topics. Hopefully, you’ll learn something from them.
How to get less spam!
In my recent post, “Astonishing! Some Bloggers Disable Comments on Their Blogs. Why?” many readers mentioned that they turn off comments due to the overwhelming number of spam comments that often come through. This is a valid concern! However, it’s worth noting that WordPress offers a setting that can help prevent you from seeing most spam comments. Activating this feature is simple.
- On your blog’s dashboard, go to Jetpack – Akismet Anti-spam.
Click Jetpack – Akismet Anti-spam
- On the page that opens, look for the Settings box. Under Spam Filtering, ensure ‘Silently discard the worst and most pervasive spam so I never see it‘ is selected.
Ensure ‘Silently discard the worst and most pervasive spam so I never see it’ has been selected.
- Click the ‘Save changes‘ button.
You’ll now see much less spam in your blog’s spam folder. On average, I’m seeing no more than a few spam comments every week.
For more details, check out my post, ‘Turn This Setting On To Stop Seeing Too Much Spam On Your WordPress Blog.’
How do you find the people you want to follow?
Author Liz Gauffreau recently left a comment on my post, ‘The Ultimate Guide to Engaging on Bluesky: Tips, Features, and Strategies for Success,’ saying she was struggling to find other users on Bluesky who read or write literary fiction.
I asked Liz if she had checked out the Bluesky Starter Pack directory, where users can search for other users with similar interests. I included a link to the directory. This is how Liz replied.
If you’re a Bluesky user, I recommend checking out the information about Starter Packs. They are an excellent way to discover other bloggers, writers, authors, photographers, and more. Starter Packs are also great for getting noticed and connecting with other users. Click the following link.
What are Bluesky Starter Packs?
And click the following link to check the Bluesky Starter Pack directory I sent to Liz.
Bluesky Starter Pack Directory.
I recently passed a milestone on Bluesky: getting over 5,000 followers. Given that I’ve only been on Bluesky since November 2024 and it took me nearly 12 years to reach 9,000 followers on X, I can’t emphasise enough how every blogger and writer should consider using Bluesky.
If you haven’t already, give Bluesky a go.
How to stop the theme you’re using from crashing your blog.
Amanda, who blogs at ForestWood, recently published a post titled ‘It’s Time For A Change Of Theme.’ She was referring to a change of blog theme. I’d recently published a post about WordPress themes, so I was interested in what Amanda had to say. Needless to say, Amanda’s post inspired me (and many others) to leave a comment.
You’ll have to read Amanda’s post to find out what she and I had to say, but it contained an important lesson some readers may have forgotten or may not know about regarding WordPress themes. Do not attempt to change your WordPress blog’s theme unless you’re using a theme still supported by WordPress.
If, like Amanda, you are using a retired theme and click ‘activate’ on any of the current themes WordPress offers, you won’t be able to return to your retired theme!
If you are using a retired WordPress theme that isn’t causing you any issues, you can continue using it. However, be cautious, as there are drawbacks to using a retired theme, including those related to online security. For more information, check out my recent post, “WordPress Themes: Something Exciting Is Happening,” which provides further details.
Let’s wrap it up!
- Use WordPress’s Jetpack – Akismet Anti-spam feature to significantly reduce spam comments. By enabling the option to “silently discard the worst and most pervasive spam,” users can keep their spam folder manageable.
- Use the Bluesky Starter Pack Directory to connect with other users with similar interests. This resource helps you discover other bloggers, writers, authors and photographers and gain visibility.
- If you are thinking of changing the theme of your WordPress blog, be aware that if the current theme you are using is retired and no longer supported by WordPress, you won’t be able to return to it.
Do you have any questions about blogging or social media? Leave them in the comments section.

Another "AI" coding assistant review from the actual field "But for anything more nontrivial, I found it took me more time to validate the code and fix the numerous big and subtle errors than it saved me."
(Original title: Martin Pitt: Testing sourcery.ai and GitHub Copilot for cockpit PR reviews)
This absolutely reflected my experience and is why I turned off Copilot. The time it saved in typing obvious things was not offset by the time I wasted debugging subtle and hard-to-spot bugs that it introduced.
The most depressing thing was that it wasn't even good at things I'd expect a token predictor to be good at. Our coding conventions specify parameter orders that are consistent across subsystems. I expected that something parsing our code would be able to learn this and give subtle hints to enforce it (autocomplete functions and calls with the parameters in the right order). Instead, the autocompletions would randomly swap parameters at call sites and were completely inconsistent in naming things and parameter order for generated functions.
The one thing that it was useful for was identifying missing abstractions. If Copilot could fill in an entire function body, the APIs it was calling were missing an abstraction.

in reply to Jon S. von Tetzchner • • •Is there a way for me to configure the Vivaldi mastodon client to use a non-Vivaldi server?
Why do you think the vertically-organized tabs is such a rare feature in web browsers? Was it especially hard to make for vivaldi? (It was a big selling point for me.)
Jon S. von Tetzchner
in reply to ShovelTrouble • • •@ShovelTrouble
You can add any Mastodon server as a Web panel. That works just fine. That is really how we integrated Vivaldi Social.
I think the question of tabs is the same as for any feature really. We have the principle that we adapt to your needs. Thus we have the ability to have the tabs on the left, right, top or bottom or even hidden. Similarly we have 3 different tab stack methods and generally just a lot of settings. This comes at a cost, but we think that is how we should do things. Thus we adapt to your requirements and needs. The others just do not think that way.

Every browser out there uses a browser engine as base that they did not write them selves from scratch. The exception was Opera, when I was CEO there, but now they use Chromium as well.
A browser is more than the engine. There is a lot of UI around it and that is what the user engages with. We also change the engine a lot, with more than 2000 files modified. We also add a mail client, calendar, feed reader and a lot more.

I have led a team building a browser engine. The only team that has done that successfully the last 30 years or so. It is not trivial, which is why Apple, Google, Microsoft and others did not do it.
BTW, Chromium is based on Webkit, that is based on KHTML. The project was built in the same building as Opera in Oslo.

I'm not saying it is, however you're claiming that by using Vivaldi people are avoiding big tech, when in reality, the core of Vivaldi is still heavily dependent on Google's goodwill.

The Mozilla project came out of Netscape. Netscape in many ways came out of NTSC, where the original Mosaic browser was made by Marc Andreessen.
Now, unlike Mozilla, we do not get a big paycheck from Google. We get nothing, but we use the Chromium codebase.
