I see a lot of excitement about the latest carbonbrief analysis on the drop of China’s carbon dioxide emissions despite rapid power demand growth. Is green growth working?
Of course it doesn’t. First, the drop in emissions is marginal, emissions show actually more a plateau than a drop. Second, once the entire power sector moved to renewables the magic will be over, and emissions will recouple with demand growth as there is no longer any potential for emission reductions. There is actually no such thing like « clean energy », power generation has always an environmental footprint. Renewables just have a smaller footprint than fossil fuels, so the shift to renewables brings temporary emission reductions. In the long run, only demand #degrowth offers a sustainable solution.
