Compliant Mechanism Shrinks Instead of Stretching
Intuitively, you think that everything that you stretch will pull back, but you wouldn’t expect a couple of pieces of plastic to win. Yet, researchers over at [AMOLF] have figured out a way to make a mechanism that will eventually shrink once you pull it enough.
Named “Counter-snapping instabilities”, the mechanism is made out of the main sub-components that act together to stretch a certain amount until a threshold is met. Then the units work together and contract until they’re shorter than their initial length. This is possible by using compliant joints that make up each of the units. We’ve seen a similar concept in robotics.
Potentially this may be used as a unidirectional actuator, allowing movement inch by inch. In addition, one application mentioned may be somewhat surprising: damping. If a structure or body is oscillating through a positive feedback loop it may continue till it becomes uncontrollable. If these units are used, after a certain threshold of oscillation the units will lock and retract, therefore stopping further escalation.

While the petition to ban conversion "therapy" has reached a million signatures, and more than 7 countries reached their thresholds, more signatures are still a good idea: we need a million valid ones, and there's always some fallout.
Sweden is also some 200 signatures short of reaching its threshold, it would be amazing if another country joined the prestigious club of those that reached their minimum signatures.
Do I dare mention that Italy is only some 4000 signatures away from being the 10th country to hit the threshold on the petition to ban conversion "therapy"? Or perhaps Denmark? That's even less, a bit over a thousand!
Meeting the minimum required to have the petition move forward (7 countries and a million signatures) is already huge. But having 10(!) countries reach the threshold? That would be mind blowing.
Please blow my mind. Figuratively speaking, of course.

What is the plan for the 'feral' momcat?

in reply to Lojie • • •We have two moms right now. The one of the older kittens is very sweet, but she is *very* aggressive towards our dogs. She has escaped the crate to attack them 3 times, even our 160lb big boy.
That means we can’t foster her and shelters are full. So if we don’t have a home for her when the kittens are all adopted out, then we’ll do a feral spay/vax on her, have her ear docked, and rerelease where we found her.
Hopefully she then self-adopts with someone but we have no choice. 😢

in reply to Thadd Selden • • •Her being aggressive towards your dogs might be only temporary, she could be in "Protective Mommacat Mode" with her kittens still around.
(And crate situations can be special, too.)
Once they are weaned and nature tells her it is time to let them go & move forward from mama-mode,
towards now-perceived threats as your dogs.
she might get much calmer
I would suggest you give her 2, 3 more weeks once the kittens are gone, and see how she acts then.
Would be heartbreaking to put a sweet ex-feral kitty back on the street, with lots of dangers and predators. 🙁

in reply to Lojie • • •We have lots of experience with how cats and dogs interact and sadly she just can’t share a house with dogs. We think she had a traumatic experience.
We totally agree that it’s awful to have to rererelease her but we just don’t have the room and it’s not fair to anyone. We have 5 fosters already plus all the kittens.
We would love to find a home for her, but the shelters are no help and it’s just really hard to place adult cats, even without challenges like dog aggression.

in reply to Lojie • • •That’s an avenue we’re already trying. A past adopter and some other friends are connected with horse communities here so we’ve reached out to see if anyone wants a barn cat.
We’re also still talking to a few folks who have expressed interest so we’re not giving up yet!
Plus I really think she would get herself adopted pretty quickly even if we do rerelease. She came from a suburban neighborhood and without the kittens to protect will likely find someone who wants a sweet Russian Blue.

Below is her listing on our website, she’s very sweet and in a dog-free home would make a wonderful house cat. When we give her and her kittens free time while the dogs are in another room, she often comes up for pets and will even sit on your lap.
We’re still hopeful we can find a place for her!
