Il sito archeologico di Peñico, tra i più antichi del Sudamerica, è stato ufficialmente aperto in Perù. Costruito intorno al 1800 a.C. dalla civiltà di Caral, comprende 18 edifici pubblici e reperti come pututu, statuette e utensili. L’area sarà parte del Parco di Caral.

Il Ministero della cultura peruviano ha annunciato pochi giorni fa l'apertura ufficiale del sito archeologico di Peñico, nella provincia di Huaura, regione del Perù centrale sulla costa dell'Oceano Pacifico. La città di Peñico venne costruita attorno al 1800 a.C. probabilmente dalla stessa popolazione che in precedenza aveva fondato Caral che, probabilmente, è la città più antica del continente americano, famosa per le sue piramidi, uniche in Sudamerica.

In una conferenza stampa tenuta da Ruth Shadis, direttrice del vicino Parco Archeologico di Caral, sono stati presentati i risultati di otto anni di scavi e ricerche nel sito, che di fatto è uno degli agglomerati urbani più antichi del Sudamerica. L'area archeologica farà parte del Parco di Caral.

Secondo Shadis, la costruzione di Peñico coinciderebbe con la decadenza degli altri centri della civiltà di Caral, cominciata attorno al 2000 a.C. a causa forse della siccità e infatti, così come a Caral, le strutture della città sono state costruite in pietra e in mattoni cotti.

Ad oggi, gli archeologi hanno individuato 18 strutture nel complesso urbano di Peñico: a suscitare il maggiore interesse sono alcuni edifici pubblici, tra cui uno denominato dagli studiosi "B2". Questa struttura monumentale era probabilmente il perno della vita cittadina di Peñico. Sulla sue mura sono presenti delle raffigurazioni del "pututu", un antico strumento musicale tipico delle popolazioni andine della costa del Perù: si tratta di una specie di tromba ricavata dalla lavorazione del guscio di diversi tipi di molluschi, tra cui Titanostrombus galeatus. Il pututu era molto importante per le antiche popolazioni peruviane, in quanto il suo suono serviva per segnalare riunioni ed eventi pubblici.
