Stanotte, così, di colpo, mentre che stavo lì nel mio lettino dormendo tranquillamente per conto mio, ho sognato che erano arrivate le IDF a bombardare il mio comune. Ok, no, sto scherzando, non l’ho sognato… bensì l’ho immaginato da sveglia, addirittura. Infatti, verso la mattina molto presto (che per me è piena notte, ormai), mi sono svegliata malamente sentendo dei rumori allucinanti che, vi giuro, sembravano delle fottute bombe, sganciate di continuo con pause di poche decine di secondi tra l’una e l’altra. Tutto mentre io volevo solamente dormire, che con ‘sto caldo maledetto già è difficile… la cosa non è finita per niente bene. 😩
Quello che a quanto pare è davvero successo è semplicemente che è arrivato un temporale di come credo di non averne mai sentiti in tutta la mia vita, perché io in genere non mi sveglio mai anche quando fa bruttissimo tempo… eppure, stavolta è successo. Ciò che udivo fortissimo, nonostante tutte le finestre serrate e la porta della mia stanza chiusa come al solito, quindi, erano fulmini… o almeno, questo è quello che dicono i poteri forti, ma io un po’ fatico a crederci. Magari mi ricordo male eh, perché già ero a metà tra il sonno e la veglia, e ovviamente tutto il disturbo non ha potuto fare altro che peggiorarmi l’umore, ma giuro di aver sentito ogni volta addirittura l’onda d’urto addosso, cioè la vibrazione. Praticamente se questi fossero davvero fulmini, e non ordigni, allora probabilmente erano larghi quanto un grattacielo e sono caduti a svariate decine di kilometri di distanza… ben fuori dal mio comune… Quindi… si può per caso dire che gli israeliani non hanno bombardato il mio comune, ma la mia provincia si??? (È persino saltata la corrente per dei minuti!) 😭
Credo di aver perso circa 10 minuti di sonno così ma, sicuramente, la mia concezione del tempo in quello stato è da diffidare… e, stranamente, la mia Mi Band stanotte non ha registrato un singolo minuto di zzz (se non l’ultimissimo quarto d’ora, che ha per qualche motivo contato come sonnellino). E passino i fulmini che mi sono sembrati chiaramente bombe nonostante io nel frattempo riuscissi a sentire fortissime le gocce di pioggia (perché alla fine che cazzo ne so da richiusa nel mio letto, magari davvero stavano radendo la città al tappeto e le gocce che sentivo o erano sostanze chimiche che venivano fatte piovere per causare ulteriori danni, o erano le nuvole che rilasciavano l’acqua per sbalzi di temperatura dovuti alle esplosioni), ma il fatto che proprio stanotte la Mi Band abbia malfunzionato mi fa specialmente paura… così come mi fa paura che ormai, nonostante siamo nell’anno del Signore 2025, la guerra è così tanto un fatto attuale che — pur senza viverla, ma solo sentendone parlare a ripetizione da qualche anno — entra nel subconscio a tal punto da farci scambiare fenomeni naturali per un attacco umano, quando il cervello non ha abbastanza informazioni per disambiguare. ☠️ Pensandoci, forse è un po’ un peccato che non solo quei rumori non fossero esplosioni, ma che non ci fosse nemmeno vento (almeno, così mi ha detto mio padre)… neanche un piccolo tornado, niente di niente. I often stumble across fascinating tidbits that have nothing to do with my research, but I wish they did. In this post in the "Social History Blog", historian Omri Eilat responds to readers complaints regarding an earlier piece he posted about Ottoman military governor Jamal Pasha, where he acknowledged that Jamal Pasha aspired to establish a modern society on a rational and scientific basis.
When accused of whitewashing Jamal's crimes against humanity, Eilat replied that modernity and rationality are loaded terms with contradictory meanings that confuse more than clarify. Liberalism, socialism, fascism, and Islamic fundamentalism are all modern phenomena. Describing Jamal Pasha's aspirations for a rational, scientific society carries no moral judgment—it's simply using his own language.
The second thing that drew readers' attention was information about Gedalia Wilbushevich, who oversaw Damascus city planning under Jamal Pasha during World War I.
Israelis don't need a historian for that explanation. They know he was chosen for his superior European education and Jewish brilliance—obvious proof that Jews naturally outclass local Arabs intellectually. The notion of Jewish supremacy runs so deep in Israeli and Jewish consciousness that I barely noticed it until I read some of the comments.
Eilat quickly deflates this fantasy. Like anyone who finished high school will tell you, the Ottoman Empire had been modernizing for decades through the Tanzimat reforms of 1839-1876, which overhauled administration, law, military, and society while establishing equal citizenship regardless of faith or ethnicity. By 1917, European-educated professionals filled the empire's ranks. Arabs, Turks, and Armenians studied at European universities or learned from European professors in Istanbul. Even David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first PM, studied law in Thessaloniki and, as a big fan of Atatürk, aspired to become an Ottoman before switching sides.
Educated Eastern European Jews like Wilbushevich were actually the exception—and disadvantaged. Russia's numerus clausus severely limited Jewish university and high school access, forcing ambitious students to flee to Switzerland, Germany, or Austria. Ottoman subjects enjoyed direct access to imperial universities and European education. Eastern European Jews were educational refugees. The Haskalah movement's modern schools in the Pale of Settlement weren't universities—they were desperate workarounds for educational apartheid.
So what's the real explanation? Jamal Pasha's game was power politics through "ethnic engineering"—dismantling Damascus's established networks by importing outsiders with zero local ties. Aaron Aaronsohn, a more famous expert he hired, later spied for the British. This pattern echoes throughout history: rulers consistently recruited Jews precisely because their outsider status seemed to guarantee loyalty to the sovereign rather than local networks.
Acknowledging that Ottoman Arabs matched Jewish qualifications means abandoning cherished myths about innate Jewish "genius." A hard pill to swallow (but don't worry, we have full statistics of Nobel Prize winners).

Everything about how we “teach”, from cradle to grave, is rooted in reward and punishment.
Carrot and stick. Approval and shame. Gold stars or public correction. Praise or punishment.
It’s a formula we’ve accepted without question for so long that we don’t even recognize it as a formula anymore. We don’t question it…we optimize it.
We design “better” systems, stronger incentives, clearer rubrics. We implement tools for behavior management and compliance. And rarely do we stop to ask:
What if the very foundation of how we’ve been taught to teach, lead, parent, and manage was never designed to serve us all in the first place?
Outside of academic spaces, and even within them, I’ve found very few environments that are willing to challenge the deeply embedded reward-punishment binary. And in the rare moments I’ve encountered alternatives, I hadn’t yet developed the lens through which I now evaluate the world.
A lens shaped by understanding how systems, institutions, and policies were deliberately constructed to benefit the few at the expense of the many.
A lens that sees how white supremacy and anti-Blackness are not fringe forces but deeply woven into every structure, every assumption, every “best practice” that has been normalized across generations.
It shapes our daily lived experiences, especially if you come from a lineage or identity that has been disrespected, erased, and criminalized.
And here’s the painful truth that I now know: The “secrets” of the Universe, the wisdom, the knowledge, the deep understanding of how to live in harmony, were never secret. They were once shared freely, passed down through generations, embedded in rituals and relationship, story and song.
Until they were stolen, destroyed, erased, or intentionally buried by those who were welcomed into spaces of learning but chose extraction over humility. Power over reciprocity. Profit over people.
It is ignorance and arrogance that turned ancient brilliance into myth and superstition. That labeled ancestral intelligence as “primitive.” That replaced communal learning with competition and control.
I often wonder how far could we be as a society, a species, a people if those first encounters with indigenous wisdom had been met with reverence instead of conquest?
What would our communities look like today if interconnectedness had been protected instead of persecuted?
I don’t have all the answers. But I do know this: I’m choosing differently now.
I’m rejecting the reward-punishment cycle that underpins so much of our educational models, workplace culture, parenting norms, and leadership strategies.
I no longer want to “earn” my worth. I no longer want to lead through fear or compliance. I no longer want to withhold, or be withheld from, based on arbitrary standards of “value.”
I want to learn through curiosity, not coercion. To grow through exploration, not fear. To remember, through connection and play, what colonization tried to make us forget.
And I want to do that learning in community with others who are also ready to reclaim teaching as a liberatory act. With others who are asking: What would it mean to rebuild everything, starting with how we learn?

I've been decolonizing whiteness pretty heavily in myself lately, and when I've written about it, it's resonated heavily with white people. It feels like there's a yearning in some to get back to our own precolonial roots. It's bigger than bigotry and race. It's a worldview that situates us in opposition to nature and drives us to dominate on behalf of our superiors.
This disconnection from our bodies, each other, and nature is unnatural, and we intuitively feel this while at the same time don't understand how to speak with our intuition. I've been on that journey for decades but only recently have had enough pieces to see the larger picture and associated those internal feelings with the ancient colonialism that my ancestors were absorbed into more than a thousand years ago.
But whiteness is the cult that America is indoctrinated with, and it's been no different than when I deconstructed the Mormonism I was raised in — difficult but enlightening.
I've been learning how to present these ideas to non-left people, and it's been resonating with some of my family. "Whiteness isn't about the color of your skin. It's an ideology that's been imposed on us that happens to use skin color as the starting point of who to exclude and rank. Here's how it works to keep all of us down." Lots of nodding and participating instead of defensiveness and arguing.
