If you’ve never used a PDP-11 before it’s probably because you simply weren’t around in the 70s and 80s. Although they started as expensive machines only in research labs and industry, they eventually became much more accessible. They’re a bit of a landmark in computing history, too, being largely responsible for the development of things like UNIX and the C programming language. [ryomuk] is using an FPGA in combination with an original DEC J-11 to bring us a new take on this machine. (Google Translate from Japanese)
The FPGA used in this build is a Tang Nano 20k, notable for its relatively low cost. The FPGA emulates the memory system and UART of a PDP-11 system down to the instruction set, while the original, unmodified DEC chip is left to its own devices. After some initial testing [ryomuk] built a PC11 paper tape emulator to ensure the system was working which runs a version of BASIC from the era. The next thing up was to emulate some disk drives and co-processors so that the machine can run the first version of UNIX.
[ryomuk] also developed a PCB for the DEC microprocessor and the FPGA to sit on together, and it includes all of the jumpers and wiring needed to allow the computer to run UNIX, as well as handling other miscellaneous tasks like power. It’s an interesting build that gets to the heart of the early days of computer science. PDP-11 computers did eventually get smaller and more accessible, and if you want to build a modern version this build fits a complete system into an ATX case.

I've had many a herding cat. They usual lead me to the foid pantry, some closed door or blinds they want opened, or to a place to sit so I can pet and play with them.
I may sound a little crazy in suggesting this, but I think I may have found the wing feather of a white tailed eagle on a walk yesterday. Is that even possible? I read that they are being introduced in southern UK and Scotland and that there are a very few breeding pairs there. I also read that they have been sighted two counties away from where this feather was found
When I saw this huge feather lying on the scree at the foot of the escarpment, I couldn't quite believe it. It is 20 inches/ 51 cm long and clearly came from a larger bird than I am used to seeing anywhere in the UK. The lack of patterning, I believe, rules out a Red Kite, even if it came from a freakishly large one
So, could I be right? Could it be from a White Tailed Eagle? Or some other large visitor that I had no idea came to these parts of NE Wales?
The size and shape rules out, to me, any wing feathers. They almost exclusively have a thinner leading edge on the primary, while this is quite uniform. Secondary and beyond are more even, but much smaller. To have wing feathers that big would dwarf even a Sea Eagle. Examples here: featherbase.info/en/species/Ha…
This, to me, looks like a tail feather. Take a look at this image of a peacock displaying, from behind. Anyone near you have peacocks?
An even better view of the brown tail feathers of an Indian Peacock, from wikipedia. It looks very alike. Note also the hint of brown dappling pattern showing on the leading edge near the quill, suggesting it's from a patterned bird.

In the coastal waters of Oslob, a giant emerges — the whale shark, the ocean’s gentle wanderer.
Oslob is a small coastal town in the Philippines. Fishermen lure young whale sharks close to shore by offering handfuls of small fish. These encounters have made the town world-famous. They give divers and snorkelers a rare chance to see the largest fish in the ocean up close.
Reaching lengths of up to 12 meters, whale sharks hold the title of the largest fish in the sea. Despite their massive size, they are filter feeders, living on plankton, tiny crustaceans, and small fish. When they feed, their cavernous mouths open wide. They draw in thousands of liters of water. This water passes through specialized gill rakers. This ingenious system allows them to extract even the tiniest morsels from the sea.
Each whale shark carries a distinctive pattern across its back and sides. The white spots and stripes form a natural fingerprint, unique to every individual. Researchers use these markings to identify and track them, building a global picture of their movements and migrations.
The practice of feeding whale sharks in Oslob draws them closer to shore than they might otherwise swim. For many visitors, this creates unforgettable encounters. It offers a chance to look into the eye of a giant. Visitors see their gills working in detail and understand their size from experience, not from a book. At the same time, these encounters raise important questions about tourism and conservation. How do humans interact with such extraordinary creatures?

Today, on International Whale Shark Day, I revisited the footage and edited the video in Final Cut Pro. The background music was composed in Logic Pro, and the narration was created using ElevenLabs’ text-to-speech feature.

The visibility of academics will be shaped through LLMs as much as social media in future
This observation by the tech journalist Casey Newton got me thinking about how LLMs are increasingly shaping the visibility of academics:
Thinking models have gotten surprisingly good at identifying potential sources — potentially academic ones. When writing about Grok last month, I wanted to talk to someone who had studied relationships between people and chatbots. ChatGPT led me to Harvard’s Center for Digital Thriving, and suggested someone to talk to, along with their email address. I wound up interviewing them for the piece. The fact that thinking models can quickly analyze the academic literature about any subject and identify prominent researchers on the subject, along with their email addresses and phone numbers, is beginning to save me a lot of Googling.
I realised early on that I was more visible in model responses (ChatGPT and Claude) than other academics of a comparable age, career stage and influence* which I assumed was because 6000 blog posts hosted on wordpress.com were gobbled up in training. It could talk at greater length, with more accuracy, about my work then it could about other academics because my online visibility translated into model visibility.
I suspect this also means I’m more prone to being suggested by the model for a topical discussion in the way that Casey points to when looking for experts to interview, though I’m unsure how to go about establishing this. The value of a long term blog also means that I figure prominently as a source for ChatGPT and software like Perplexity. Interestingly, I don’t recall ever seeing a single referral from Claude. In the last year I’ve had more referrals to this blog from ChatGPT than I have from Facebook or Bluesky, though interestingly LinkedIn drives more traffic.
In other words there’s a complex relationship between online visibility and model visibility. Given that online visibility is the key driver which led social media to be institutionalised into higher education in the UK, this is very significant for academic careers even if it takes a long time for it to consolidate into a widely recognised incentive structure.
What other factors lead to increased model visibility? Ultimately this is a matter of visibility within the training data, but the patterns of visibility produced by this are challenging to conceptualise. What are the positive and negative outcomes of increased model visibility? Casey illustrates one in terms of visibility to journalists but there are many others.
*I did this in a very impressionistic way but it would be interesting to do this as a robust quantitative exercise.
