Cooler cars at better prices? America's new trade deal with the EU could mean just that.
Traditionally, manufacturers have had to produce two different versions of the same vehicle to meet U.S. and European requirements. Even small differences in pedestrian safety regulations, emissions rules, or lighting standards have required costly redesigns, duplicate testing, and extensive certification processes. These expenses are ultimately passed down to consumers.
Billions of dollars in development, certification, and testing costs could be avoided, allowing automakers to focus on innovation, quality, and design.
But in July 2025, the United States and the European Union unveiled a landmark trade framework that could reshape how vehicles are manufactured, certified, and sold on both continents.
Meeting halfway
At the heart of the agreement is mutual recognition of vehicle safety and emissions standards, a policy shift that promises to simplify cross-Atlantic auto sales and significantly cut costs for manufacturers.

By aligning standards, the agreement allows a vehicle certified in Europe to be sold in the U.S. without additional modification, and vice versa. The economic potential of this alignment is substantial, offering billions in savings across the auto industry.
Tariff relief
Here's why this could be a game changer. Tariffs were a significant factor in the negotiation with the EU. The U.S. had previously threatened duties of up to 30% on European vehicles, which could have dramatically increased costs for consumers and disrupted supply chains.
The framework caps tariffs at 15%, contingent upon reciprocal reductions on U.S. exports. In addition, Europe has agreed to expand energy imports from the United States, including LNG and oil, while committing to purchase U.S.-made AI chips and other strategic products. Where there's smog

The U.S. enforces its own rigorous emissions frameworks, though they differ from European rules in focus and measurement. Mutual recognition does not lower environmental standards. Consumers could also see unintended consequences if automakers prioritize efficiency and cost savings over other vehicle features or options. The political landscape adds another layer of complexity, as both regions must maintain regulatory cooperation while navigating domestic pressures. This could potentially end the deal if they can't come to an agreement.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested MS-13 associate Kilmar Abrego Garcia on Monday and set the stage for his deportation to Uganda.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement to Blaze News, "President Trump is not going to allow this illegal alien, who is an MS-13 gang member, human trafficker, serial domestic abuser, and child predator, to terrorize American citizens any longer."
'The media's sympathetic narrative about this criminal illegal alien has completely fallen apart.'
But Paula Xinis of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland โ a judge former President Barack Obama nominated โ swiftly intervened to prevent the removal of the Salvadoran national. Xinis told the Trump administration it was "absolutely forbidden" from deporting Garcia, then issued a temporary restraining order to this effect.
On Thursday, the MS-13 associate asked a different Obama judge to prevent Attorney General Pam Bondi, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and all of the officials in their respective agencies from discussing his sordid history.
"Since Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia was released from pretrial custody last Friday, officials from the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security โ and even the White House โ have attacked Mr. Abrego in the media in numerous highly prejudicial, inflammatory, and false statements," Garcia's attorneys noted in the request to U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw, an Obama-nominated judge who sought Abrego's release in July.
Garcia and his legal team were especially prickled by the suggestion that he is "a known MS-13 gang member, human trafficker, wife beater, and child predator."
While Garcia's attorneys complained that such claims were "baseless," it's clear the Trump administration did not create the allegations out of whole cloth.
Justice Department attorneys indicated earlier this year that in March 2019, Garcia was summoned to appear in removal proceedings. During a bond hearing, ICE stated that a confidential informant flagged Garcia as an active member of MS-13. The illegal alien's bond was denied with the court reportedly finding "that Abrego Garcia was a danger to the community."
When Garcia appealed that decision to the Board of Immigration Appeals, an immigration judge determined in April 2019 that "the determination that the Respondent is a gang member appears to be trustworthy and is supported by other evidence in the record."
As with Garcia's MS-13 link, the domestic abuser claim also did not appear out of thin air.
Garcia's wife, Jennifer Vasquez, sought domestic violence protective orders against him in 2020 and 2021. Vasquez alleged in her 2021 protective order petition that Garcia punched her, ripped off her shirt, and both scratched and bruised her.

The human trafficking allegation that Garcia wants DHS and DOJ officials to refrain from publicly mentioning is fleshed out in his federal grand jury indictment which accuses him of conspiracy to transport aliens and unlawful transportation of undocumented aliens.
The indictment alleges that Garcia conspired to bring illegal aliens โ adults and children alike โ into the U.S. from countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Ecuador, and elsewhere from 2016 until this year. He allegedly made over 100 trips over the course of this alleged human smuggling campaign.
"Over the course of the conspiracy, the co-conspirators knowingly and unlawfully transported thousands of undocumented aliens who had no known authorization to be present in the United States, and many of whom were MS-13 member and associates," said the indictment.
As for the "child predator" allegation, Bondi told reporters in June that one of Garcia's alleged co-conspirators claimed that he not only "abused undocumented alien females" who were "under his control while transporting them throughout our country" but allegedly "solicited nude photographs and videos of a minor."
Bondi, Noem, and the White House's repeated references to these and other skeletons in Garcia's closet evidently infuriated him, but Garcia's attorneys said in their Thursday request that the "piรจce de resistance" was the DHS' repost of this White House meme:

Garcia's attorneys claimed in the request that "if the government is allowed to continue in this way, it will taint any conceivable jury pool by exposing the entire country to irrelevant, prejudicial, and false claims about Mr. Abrego."
His attorneys asked for a gag order prohibiting all DHS and DOJ officials involved in Garcia's case โ and all officials in their supervisory chain โ "from making extrajudicial comments that pose a substantial likelihood of materially prejudicing this proceeding."
A DHS official told the Hill, "If Kilmar Abrego Garcia did not want to be mentioned by the Secretary of Homeland Security, then he should have not entered our country illegally and committed heinous crimes."
The DHS official continued, "Once again, the media is falling all over themselves to defend this criminal illegal MS-13 gang member who is an alleged human trafficker, domestic abuser, and child predator. The media's sympathetic narrative about this criminal illegal alien has completely fallen apart, yet they continue to peddle his sob story."
The Hill indicated that the DOJ declined to comment.

Students were central to Indonesian opposition politics in the 80s and 90s. The democracy movement forced Suharto to resign and remains a check on power. Indonesians know the democracy is theirs. They fought for it and that struggle is still recent memory.
From independence in 1945 through the rise and fall of Sukarno and Suharto to the democracy movement of the 1990s, students have been central. They are one of the forces able to confront power directly.
Some history: After Japanโs surrender in 1945 youth leaders pushed Sukarno and Hatta to declare independence. When the Allies came to restore colonial Dutch rule they found a war of independence and a nation seemingly split into left vs. right, Islamic vs. secular, young vs. old.
In June 1945 Sukarno gave his "Birth of Pancasila" speech, outlining the principles for the new nation. After years of revolutionary conflict the Republic of Indonesia was declared in 1950 under Pancasila and a provisional constitution.
The Indonesian communist party (Partai Komunis Indonesia, PKI) grew quickly during this time and by the 1960s was the largest non-ruling communist party in the world. The army, the PKI, and Islamic separatists all struggled for power.
Sukarno ruled through 'Guided Democracy' which was modeled on village consensus, held together by his blending of Nasakom: nationalism, religion, communism. He balanced the army and PKI which earned him one of his nicknames: Dalang, the puppetmaster.
By mid-60s Sukarnoโs rhetoric was more anti-Western and the PKI was strong. On Aug 17, 1965 he announced an "anti-imperialist JakartaโPhnom PenhโHanoiโBeijingโPyongyang axis" and said that only the army stood in the way. Weeks later, the Sept 30th Movement attempted a coup.
6 generals were killed. Major General Suharto seized the army, claimed he would protect Sukarno, but refused to return power. Within a year Sukarno was forced out. Suhartoโs 'New Order' replaced the 'old order' of Sukarno.
After the coup Suharto's army and militias massacred PKI members, families, and others. 1 million or more were killed by 1966. It was one of the largest mass killings of the 20th century. Key fact: Indonesia's current president was a general under Suhartoโs authoritarian regime.
The New Order era reversed Sukarnoโs anti-imperialism, launched 'development,' and programs to depoliticize society, transform the rakyat (people), who had fought for independence from Dutch and Japanese colonialism, into a 'docile and manipulated' massa (Masses).
By 80s & 90s opposition survived in NGOs, elites, students. Demonstrations continued against indoctrination and 'ideological homogeneity,' protecting resistance and memory Suharto tried to erase. In 1998 they forced Suharto to resign.
Indonesia's current president Prabowo Subianto coming into power is concerning precisely because he was part of Suharto's authoritarian regime that was overthrown in the 90s. This is one part of the context for the worker and student protests happening now to keep in mind.
The retired general who is now president has established 100 new army battalions and plans more โ and critics say the move has echoes of the countryโs authoritarian past
The genocide of communists and others started Suharto's authoritarian regime, and he continued to oppress and kill for decades, often with the help of the United States and people like Henry Kissinger.
When Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1975 killing over 200,000 civilians the US provided weapons and diplomatic cover. Ford and Kissinger met with Suharto the day before invasion, giving a green light. The US blocked UN action for decades while genocide continued.
Genocide for profit then as now: Kissinger later served on the board of Freeport-McMoRan, a multinational mining company that Indonesia has allowed to mine in Papua under military control, against the wishes of the Papuan people, destroying their sacred mountains and ecosystem.
Not surprisingly some of the reporting about the Indonesian protests in the western media is saying things like "a motorcycle taxi driver was killed" but that's not what happened. He was killed by an armoured police car that ran him over. There is a video, it's horrifying. Police killed him.
The police car that ran over the protestor was part of the Mobile Brigade (Korps Brigade Mobil), aka Brimob. It's a paramilitary tactical unit of the Indonesian National Police. The perfect symbol of the militarism of Indonesia's current president Prabowo Subianto who was part of Suharto's authoritarian regime that was overthrown in the 90s.

This is the kind of protest that can overthrow a government. Protests were large but when police killed Affan Kurniawan and arrested hundreds, students and others across the country mobilized in a way Indonesia hasn't seen since the late 1990s.
It's astonishing to see so little attention to what's happening in Indonesia right now. This is the world's third largest democracy with 280 million people, world's largest Muslim majority nation, an archipelago of 18,000 islands, 700 languages, and diverse cultures.

This reporting explains how president Prabowo Subianto has ordered the military and police to crack down on "anarchic" protesters, still further escalation in suppressing dissent, limiting freedom and rights.
There's a sense also among Indonesians that the world is not paying attention to the escalation of protests and to the escalation of the government in response. Remember that President Subianto was one of Suharto's generals under that authoritarian regime. Many are posting this online.
