So, I finally finished repairing and refinishing my grandmother's bookcase. The shelves were originally attached with pegs, but after making structural repairs, I could only put pegs into one side of the bookshelves. It seems my grandfather had that problem as well, since I saw that he put a nail into one of the pegged spots. With the pegs, the bookshelf was foldable. I noticed that a lot of furniture my grandparents owned was on wheels (probably because they moved around a lot)? Anyhow, I'm quite pleased with the results, and now my grandmother's bookcase is in my upstairs hallway, and is filled with cryptozoology books, history books, and tomes about spooky lore and other subjects related to my fiction writing. cc: @ShadowPlay

Greater penetration of EVs is changing urban air quality in a second beneficial way which has nothing to do with eliminating tailpipe emissions. "A new analysis in London, Milan, and Barcelona shows battery electric cars cut brake dust by about 83% thanks to regenerative braking." However, the tradeoff is electric cars also tend to be heavier, so they can increase tiny particles from tire wear even as brake dust plummets. "Benedetto Giechaskiel, PhD, European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRCs ), has led peer-reviewed work into how pads, discs, filters, and regenerative braking shape these non-exhaust particles." EV drivetrains convert velocity or kinetic energy largely back into battery charging, so the friction brakes work less, slashing the dust [as seen in the photo] that otherwise becomes airborne near crosswalks and bus stops. And brake dust tends to produce more airborne fine particles at the curb, which is what drivers, passenger, cyclists + pedestrians inhale. Notably, "only a small fraction of tire wear becomes airborne PM10, with one comprehensive review estimating about 1%." And most tire fragments settle on roadsides, wash into drains or are cleaned up by street sweeping vehicles. "Particulate matter is not one thing but a mix of sizes and chemistries, and the smallest particles, PM2.5, are the fractionmost closely tied to asthma attacks, heart strain, and early death." Brake dust also carries metals like copper + iron, while tires shed rubbery microplastics + sulfur compounds." While there is currently a tradeoff, the weight of batteries + motors is trending downwards, so this problem may disappear. Clearly, brake dust is dangerous + an 83% reduction is music to my ears.
I totally confirm that, I very rarely have to use the brakes on my EV (only emergencies). I just take the foot off the accelerator and car begins slowing down doing it's regenerative breaking thing. Result: my EV is two years old now, but my brakes are basically brand new.
@andre123 I think it's important when you go in for service that you tell them to not replace the brake liniing unless it is truly worn down. I think they are likely to replace them on a rote schedule.

I have an issue with Speech to Text in #HomeAssistant and I can't be the only one running into this, but I can't find many references to it in my searches.
I have a simple example. When you ask TTS for something but it understands it wrong and gives you the wrong text.
I ask for "Deadloch" (an Australian TV Show) using American English TTS but it understands "Deadlock".
I am trying to use this for looking up media in Jellyfin, but of course "Deadlock" does not exist so this fails.
I have an automation that does the look up. How can I create a whitelist of sorts that replaces commonly misheard words for the correct one?
I can't seem to find a way to modify the trigger variable in the automation. Is the only option to copy the value into another variable and then use that for the search?
I wanted to do a top If that replaces common misspellings but only if one matches, otherwise the variable stays the same.
@Oggie I used conditions in the automation and added one at the top that if the "heard" text matches the wrong value, it just forces it to play the correct media using the known media ID.
Then it continues and if it can't find the result, responds with "Not found"
And then the last one is one to process a valid media ID.
I use a script that obtains the media ID from Jellyfin using the REST API. So I'm basically going to manually correct any known errors but otherwise it should use the results from the search.
Ok I found a way to do this, didn't have to be this complicated.
Since this is a very specific issue, I just added a condition that if the STT value is "Deadlock" it just automaticlaly plays the media ID that belongs to Deadloch, else it continues using the media ID found with the script.
I got the magazines that came with BASIC programs printed in them, you could pay extra to get a subscription that included a tape with the code so you didn't have to type the whole thing in and risk typos.
That early foray into BASIC was essential for my early involvement in technology, in spite of what Dijkstra said that one time....
I was given a bunch of old Compute!'s Gazettes by an uncle who'd moved onto PCs from his Commodore 64. I did not get the benefit of the tape or disk option unfortunately, but as a result, many of those magazines are bedaubed with felt-tip where I marked my progress whiling away hours typing in those programs.
I learned so much about the Commodore 64 from those magazines.
By the time I got my C64C in the '90s, magazines had long since stopped publishing code listings due to cost. If they'd continued to do so, magazines would have been twice the price, and less than half as many people would have been able to afford them. As it was, the magazines were, by that point, at least partially subsidised by game companies who wanted to get a demo out on the tape or disk.
I'm still annoyed my subscription to one of those magazines ran out the month before the last ever issue. I could probably get one on eBay for a reasonable price, but it's the principle, dammit.

I got into computers in the mid 70s with the advent of the Altair. Reading your comment was like a flashback. I remember you'd finally get through, meticulously typing in all the pages of code. So your cross your fingers and ran it and got an error. But I was hooked. I still have my Altair, Timex/Sinclair, Ti 99 & 994a. I had/have everything imaginable for the Ti. You needed a kitchen table to spread all that out on.
Later on, as you say, demos became a big thing, I loved the demos. I would write just about anyone giving away a demo of something. Game demos would at least let you play one or two levels.
So your cross your fingers and ran it and got an error.
And eventually we learned to understand the programs we were typing in, knowing what those errors meant and how to fix them without looking back at the listing. Magical.
