Today I went to the Neon Museum of Modern Art in Glendale, CA. Very fun!

The museum also has a workshop and for bigger bucks you can take a class to learn how to be a "neon bender".

I haven't eaten meat in so long and I sincerely don't miss it but anytime I mention it to my friends it's unconscionable. I wasn't even pitching for them to be a vegetarian, I was pitching for them to eat smaller portions.
I brought up that we should stop subsidizing red meat so heavily so we can subsidize healthier foods, I might as well have been Judas himself.

in reply to Mike Malaska • • •"Neon" is a generic term for sticking rarified noble gases (and maybe some metal vapor) in a tube and zapping it with high voltage alternating current.
The high voltage strips off the outermost electron, and when it pops back in, it releases a photon at the corresponding quantum level.
You get the same effect in an aurora. But noble gases are not corrosive.
Here is a transparent display that show the different noble gases.

Like the neon sign for Dr. Kilzum pest control services. A lot of different colors and shapes on this 10 foot tall sign. Imagine blowing all those glass tubes!

The museum showcased some REALLY creative tricks you can use to make changing neon art..
Here is a Jacob's Ladder effect where the heated air rises as it is repeatedly arced. But at the top of the ladder it triggers off an ionization that fires off a red neon light!

Another trick is to create a "crackle tube". A crackle tube is a large glass cylinder filled with small non-conducting glass tube sections. As the discharge occurs, it tries to find a better path so is continually shifting the route. This creates a crackling effect.
(The museum sign stated this was the largest cackle rube known. It was about 2 m high.)

In a seperate dark room they had plasma art. Contained and controlled plasma that was changing.
I think they play wih a lot of factors, voltage, gas composition, and pressure.

Haha! I was prepared so I brought along my "Jupiterscope"* diffusion-diffraction grating and looked at the plasma arcs through that. You could pick out a clean red and green single line spectrum.
*bought at the Seattle Pacific Science Center when I was 8 years and I still use it! Seriously fun thing to have, especially with vapor-based streetlights.

I did get a good still image so that everyone can enjoy it.
Museum entry fee was 10 bucks. I spent an hour and saw everything. (It is across the street and down a city block from the Glendale Gallaria, so if you need a break from shopping but are OK with "dazzle", then check it out.
They did say they were getting some background pieces from the movie "Blade Runner".
