Fun time #volunteering at my local #RepairCafe this morning. I fixed a drill (resoldered detached wire) fixed an OOOOLD snap on NiCad battery pack for a impact driver. Glued a bit of a binocular casing back together. Advised on disposal of a kettle and rewired a broken mains cable on a lawnmower. My colleagues on the #sewing table helped get a 15yr old mate if my son do visible #repairs on his (well skated) jeans!

When you open a port on your router you’re allowing inbound connections from the internet to that port via your WAN IP, with a VPN however, that typically does not work since you’re forcing all your traffic through a specific data centre with its own firewall. Most well developed VPN providers will offer Port Forwarding as a feature which usually opens a random port for people to make those inbound connections, you instruct your download client to use the port your VPN provider gives you so that people can leech from you without exposing your WAN IP.
There are plenty of resources online, but to get started I would go the easy route that I went and use docker.
Look to set up an “arr” stack. Make sure you have it set up gluetun and link to a VPN.
Essentially, you’ll buy a VPN connectio. Ensure this has P2P and Port Forwarding support.
You then set up docker in a way that first connects the vpn. If the vpn doesn’t work then it won’t start the download client like qbittorrent.
If you wait until after work I can share my docker compose file to give you an idea, but honestly if you’re somewhat capable with a keyboard then you can google you’re way to getting set up.

I feel like one could direct a movie about the continuous obseletion of tech that's perfectly functional simply because the newer stuff is just that much better it doesn't make sense to keep using it, because of power efficiency and the resources its existence prevents from being reused in more efficient ways.
At heart I keep wanting to reuse things and repair things infinitely, but strangely, counterintuitively, that doesn't always make sense. Although maybe we could find more efficient ways?🤔
Like what if you could take the chip and hook it up to more RAM like you would with an older desktop (CPU)?
Or what if you could just replace the chip and memory, saving all the other components?
If GPUs were more SoC-like, we could develop some kind of backwards compatible bus akin to PCIE but at chip level for getting access to memory and being accessed and commanded from the main CPU perhaps?
Maybe one day humanity will figure out true resource reuse in computer tech, it's kinda needed tbh

Have a bizarre observation that I hope someone can help with.
On #Windows 11, D: (1.4TB) and X: (350GB) are on the same physical NVME SSD. When I do `winsat disk -drive` I get a proper seq write speed (3.7GB/s) for X but only 336MB/s for D.
Any idea why or what I can check? Help/ RT appreciated.

På den ene måten ville det gjort livet så mye enklere, men på den andre, så liker jeg virkelig ikke tanken på å bare gi opp matematikken.
Den store utfordringen er at kalkulus er liksom lagt opp slik at man må ta 3 fag - alle på forskjellige semester - for å ha gjennomført kalkulus skikkelig.
Men hva hvis jeg gjør det skikkelig dårlig på første faget. Hvordan påvirker det veien videre? Er det håp om å fortsette da? Optimisten vil kanskje si "ja", men det er noe med det å oppleve litt mestringsfølelse også. *sukk*

Rob Dyke and Marcus Baw got together to talk about a project I've been involved in back in 2017, the creation of a #Linux desktop that could have replaced #Windows on the majority of PCs of the #NHS and could have avoided many #cybersecurity issues since then.
Unfortunately back then some didn't want change to happen and despite having produced a fully working desktop we were forced to shut down the project.
Today things are different and change is happening.
Rob and I do a detailed review of the - ‘two bottle of wine problem’ - NHSbuntu project which we built together back in 2017, relating how we used the great work already existing in the Linux and Open Source community to quickly put together a fully-functional, NHSmail-ready, stable, secure, legacy-app-friendly and low cost operating system for the NHS. With help from our friends (shout out to Brett Jackson, Cián Hughes, Rani Sen, NHS Spine Team, NHS Digital Delivery Centre, and others) we quickly had a working NHS Spine Identity Agent, and we virtualised/containerised anything that looked like it wasn’t fit to face the ravages of the internet. Rob Dyke: Described as the project's "ISO-master" and a technologist, Dyke was instrumental in the technical development of the operating system itself.4 He was responsible for building the custom Ubuntu distributions (ISOs) and working on key features like smart card integration.
Community: The project's developers actively fostered a community on platforms like openhealthhub.org, encouraging contributions from other IT staff, clinicians, and enthusiasts within the NHS.
The NHSbuntu/NHoS project began in early 2017, spurred by the need for a more secure, cost-effective, and flexible alternative to the NHS's heavily Microsoft-reliant IT infrastructure.7 The WannaCry cyber-attack in May 2017, which severely disrupted NHS services, highlighted the vulnerabilities the project aimed to solve, giving it a surge of public attention and support.8
In January 2018, the project was officially shut down.15 The developers, led by Dr. Baw, cited the constant legal threats and a lack of high-level support from key NHS bodies like NHS Digital as the reason for closing the project.
They felt they were being "used as leverage" in internal discussions about a new enterprise-wide agreement with Microsoft, and that despite interest from "grass-roots" IT staff, the higher echelons were not interested in backing an open-source alternative.16
The project remains an important case study in the challenges of introducing grassroots open-source initiatives into a large, politically sensitive, and highly bureaucratic public sector organization
