REMINDER: in a crisis, all the tales of neighbors turning on each other, violence and chaos, cats and dogs living together... are fairy tales. They are the specter the state raises to justify violence on the citizenry to maintain control. In reality, people automatically pitch in and help their neighbors during a crisis.
People get maximally creative in a crisis. We find a way to survive, it's what we do best.

I spent many years living in a sort of 'anarchist collective' (because our community wasn't a real town with any sort of town leadership, and the county only cared enough about us to let us register for school and send an annual $300 tax bill)
People living far outside of authoritarian governments band together just fine in times of crisis. Neighbors help each other fight wildfires, get transport to distant hospitals, handle the occasional vandals, etc.

I think they really really need to sell us their business model, if they're not going to sell us their software.
This is a bold move, and intended to drop the hammer on folks wanting to exit Adobe. It's also a level of drama that makes me anxious. Will they really be there a decade from now, or will I have to migrate to yet another platform when FREE becomes unsustainable?
I remember when Google told me I could have my legacy Google Workspace for free, forever. Look how that turned out.

All they have to do is make all the newly developed features and versions paid upgrades through Canva. I suspect that’s where they’re going to get their ROI. Everything will require Canva integration eventually. They’re saying it won’t now, but clearly things change.

They're making a grab for market share in a dramatic fashion, and maybe that's the only practical way to kick Adobe in the nuts. Maybe that will work. I very much doubt they'll lock out old licences, more likely they'll be an update of MacOS one day that breaks something and I'll have to reassess whether the new version is really FREE or not.
All that seems a fair way down the track.
I'm seeing some hyperventilation over data harvesting and somehow being forced to pay to access essential features. I don't care for the negativity right now. I really don't need the doom squad looking for the worst possible angle in everything.
Canva are giving away a free design suite in order to build market share for their other products. Existing owners still have access to the software we already bought.
Can people just be happy for a moment or maybe go take a walk?

Free was totally unexpected, but from a quick look I had this morning, it isn’t lacking any features (just the Canva AI stuff is paywalled, and frankly, who cares about that?).
