TATA Advanced Systems on 24 December, 2025 has announced and declared regarding its delievery of first batch of TATA Whap to Royal Moroccan Army, out of 150.
This batch was manufactured in TASL's newly established facility in Berrechid, Morocco, which was inaugarated by Indian Defense Minister himself. This shows rising Indian-Moroccan defense partnership.
The Whap has around 50 percent of local moroccan components, which is said to enhance employment and other opportunities in Morocco for moroccan people.
The real thing to discuss is the issue with Indian Army. Despite such success of Tata Whap, Indian Army still does not operate Tata Whap in a large scale, despite being indigenous and capable. 105 units are planned, but until now, only 15 are operational and 9 are on order.
The real reason for this is said to be US Stryker. Despite the capabilities of Stryker being busted by Indian Army during testings, India mainly to improve and enhance diplomatic defense relations with US to control China, has not yet ordered neither Tata Whap nor Stryker in large numbers.
Tata Whap nonethless is better in high-altitude warfare, the problem is for how long will Indian Army keep doubting Indigenous Content like it did with ATAGS and Self-propelled Artillary (MGS) despite being the best in their respective classes and terrains.

github.com/resemble-ai/chatter… is pretty good, and has both TTS and voice cloning. Main disadvantage for me was that even if the cloning gives a consistent voice, the generated samples can get random accents.
None of this may be relevant, but I'm curious what your use case is. I use TTS very extensively to consume media and have my preferences. None of them are open source, but as far as I know all operate locally, though they're baked into other programs like screen readers and ebook readers.
I prefer older more robotic voices because they remain intelligible at high speed. Eloquence is a favorite, as are the older Apple voices like Fred and Ralph. I think it has gone by other names but TruVoice (spacing and capitalization may vary) is also up there. It was semi popular during the surreal meme era. Another memetic synth that's a little before my time but I quite enjoy is DECTalk (AKA the Moonbase Alpha voice). I believe Vocalizer was responsible for the OG Siri voice Samantha and that one's a more human voice that's still serviceable at high speeds.
my use case is that n8n sshs into a remote machine with low specs and a connected speaker to read out information sent from n8n so i can do stuff like: pico2wave -l de-DE -w /tmp/warn.wav "Es ist {{ $json.Hour }} Uhr." && aplay /tmp/warn.wav And as you might have guess by now german language would be appreciated. I'm not going to run any additional docker containers for voice generation or invoke remote services. also the speaker is as dirt cheap as the rest of the setup so any output from espeak was basically killing my eardrums.
I'm fairly confident espeak is all you're going to get that's FOSS, local, and with any non English support. Yes every espeak language sounds like a Brittish guy badly pronouncing that language, and this includes the American English voice as well.
@ikidd@lemmy.world pointed me to piperTTS and i ended up with a python virtual enviroment, pip install piper-tts and de_DE-thorsten-high.onnx+json to be able to run echo "{{ $json.state}}" | piper -m ./de_DE-thorsten-high.onnx -f voice.wav && aplay voice.wav
and indeed that sounds much better than pico and espeak
The docker setup is probably less maintenance than a straight install, but your usecase might need the bare install. there's also Home Assistant that can add Piper as an Addon (which is a docker container inside the HassOS docker container). Also the Hass install will let you add faster-Whisper and Openwakeword for a full voice assistant that autoconnects via the Wyoming protocol.

1. Hello! I'm a Vietnamese fibrecrafter, living on Dharawal land (Wollongong).
2. I'd been knitting and spinning for several years, but after a major life/career decision in early 2024, I dove even deeper into the world of fibrecrafts both to keep my brain from going to mush and to comfort myself. Against my more reversed nature, I put myself out there to connect with a wider community of crafters and makers, who have been so kind and generous with their skills and knowledge, and some of whom have become dear friends.
3. If there is such a thing as a calling in life, mine would probably be teaching. I so enjoyed tutoring back in uni; I loved helping students with writing. I'm now flexing that teaching and instructing muscle again as I run knitting workshops at Finzah Yarn Studio, my local yarn shop in Cringilla.
4. I'd call myself a multicraftual maker. For now, I'm deep in working with raw fleece and learning about the different breeds here in Australia. I spin on wheels and spindles, I switch between ten knitting WIPs intermittently, and I'm in a phase of obsession with overshot weaving.
5. I do have an Instagram still (I'm clumsy.feetsies on there), because of the visual nature of sharing about crafts. But I'm much more at home when I can write extensively, hence my blog at threadsinprogress.blog/.
6. I love the more medium to long wool breeds. Love me some tactile feedback when I'm combing and spinning.
7. I would choose a densely cabled knitting project over a plain Stocking stitch one in most situations.
8. One of the books that changed my world in the past year was "Women's Work: The First 20,000 Years" by the wonderful anthropologist Elizabeth Wayland Barber. I am so keen to ask questions and learn more about the way "women's work" has shaped history and our current times.
9. I love novels that are more quiet character studies and centering the perspective of women—I finished "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" on an 8-hour flight this year and fully intend to reread it every year. I welcome any recommendations 😀
10. I have a menace of a cat. I will most likely inundate people here with photos of him.
11. I also have a husband who embraces my 1000-ideas-per-minute, scattering-craft-projects-around-the-apartment self to a ridiculous extent. I have my Craft Nook off to the side of the dining area, and he has his Carnivorous Plants Nook (a massive nylon greenhouse) out on the balcony. The cat owns the rest of the place. It's a win-win-win situation.

La mia prima lettura dell’anno riguarda una vicenda che continua a far discutere nel mondo della cybersecurity. Parliamo della lunga battaglia legale tra Meta/WhatsApp e la società israeliana NSO Group, nota per aver sviluppato lo spyware Pegasus, utilizzato in passato per colpire giornalisti, attivisti e perfino figure politiche in vari Paesi, Italia compresa.
La causa nasce dalle accuse secondo cui, nel 2019, NSO avrebbe sfruttato una vulnerabilità nelle chiamate VoIP di WhatsApp per colpire circa 1.400 utenti con attacchi “zero‑click”, cioè senza alcuna interazione da parte della vittima. Secondo Meta, NSO avrebbe reverse‑ingegnerizzato l’app e creato un vettore di attacco che permetteva ai suoi clienti governativi di sorvegliare gli utenti e accedere ai dati presenti sui server della piattaforma.
Un giudice federale della California ha infatti respinto la richiesta di NSO di sospendere l’ingiunzione che le impedisce di utilizzare l’infrastruttura di WhatsApp per qualsiasi attività legata ai suoi spyware, almeno fino alla decisione sull’appello.
NSO sostiene che l’ingiunzione rischia di causare danni “catastrofici” alla sua attività, ma il giudice ha stabilito che l’azienda non ha dimostrato di avere buone probabilità di successo nel contestare la propria responsabilità. Le prove raccolte finora mostrano che NSO avrebbe superato di molto qualsiasi uso autorizzato del servizio.
L’unica concessione del tribunale è una breve sospensione amministrativa di massimo 45 giorni, che servirà a NSO per chiedere l’intervento della corte d’appello. Fino ad allora, però, la società non potrà utilizzare WhatsApp né la sua infrastruttura per alcuna attività legata allo sviluppo o al test dei suoi strumenti di sorveglianza.
In sintesi il tribunale, giustamente, sembra voler impedire che l’azienda continui a usare WhatsApp come piattaforma per individuare nuove vulnerabilità o sviluppare nuovi exploit. In pratica, non si tratta solo di chiudere una falla, ma di bloccare chi quella falla l’ha sfruttata e potrebbe farlo di nuovo.
È un segnale forte verso l’intero settore degli spyware commerciali: la sorveglianza digitale non può essere lasciata senza regole, e le aziende che operano in questo campo devono rispondere delle proprie azioni. Una vicenda che, a mio avviso, continuerà a far discutere ancora a lungo.
