Amici miei,
se davvero volete sapere quando tutto è cominciato, devo portarvi indietro — non solo nel tempo, ma anche nel sogno. Avevo dieci anni, come sempre, e quel giorno il bosco sembrava diverso. Non c’era un lupo da salvare, né una strega da ingannare. C’era solo una strana nebbia che non avevo mai visto prima.
Camminavo lungo il sentiero che scende verso il ruscello delle trote parlanti — sì, quelle che ti raccontano i segreti dell’acqua, ma solo se porti loro delle briciole di pane. Quel giorno, però, non parlava nessuno. Il bosco taceva. La nebbia era ovunque, densa e argentea come la pelliccia di un gatto invisibile.
Istintivamente, feci quello che faccio sempre: andai avanti. E dopo qualche passo… il mondo cambiò.
Fu come entrare in un sogno che non avevo ancora fatto. La luce era diversa, più calda e gialla, come l’alba che si posa sulle colline. Gli alberi erano più alti, più silenziosi. Gli uccelli… non parlavano. Questo mi sorprese più di ogni altra cosa. Perché ogni creatura del mio mondo ha voce, anche le rocce se sai ascoltarle.
“Dove sono?” pensai.
Mi guardai le mani. Erano sempre le mie, ma mi parevano più… pesanti. Il cuore batteva più forte. Avevo freddo e caldo insieme. E poi — questo non lo dimenticherò mai — vidi un uomo. Un vero uomo. Uno che non mi sembrava parte di nessuna fiaba.
Era seduto su una pietra, con uno zaino e una mappa. Parlava da solo, o forse registrava la sua voce su un piccolo aggeggio che mai avevo visto prima. Diceva cose strane: “Foresta del Vallone, escursione del 15 maggio. Sentiero poco visibile, nebbia in aumento. Strane forme tra gli alberi.” E poi, si voltò. E mi vide.
Restammo fermi, a guardarci. Io, un personaggio nato dal racconto di una nonna. Lui, un uomo vero, di quelli che hanno bollette da pagare e scarponi sporchi di fango.
“Chi sei?” mi chiese.
“Io sono Bigoulin,” risposi, come se fosse la cosa più normale del mondo.
E lui, anziché ridere o spaventarsi, sgranò gli occhi. “Sei… sei il personaggio della storia che mi raccontava mia nonna quando ero piccolo.” Lo disse con una voce tremante, come se avesse appena visto un ricordo prendere vita.
Capite, amici? In quel momento, tutto si fece chiaro. Io non ero solo un personaggio di fantasia. Io vivevo nei cuori di chi mi aveva immaginato. E quando la fantasia è abbastanza forte, quando qualcuno crede davvero, allora il confine tra i mondi si dissolve. Come quella nebbia.
Dopo pochi istanti, tutto svanì. L’uomo, la luce dorata, il peso strano del corpo. Ero di nuovo nel mio bosco, con le trote che si lamentavano perché il pane era finito.
Da allora, ho imparato a cercare quella nebbia. A volte appare tra le pagine di un libro dimenticato, altre volte nell’ombra sotto un letto, quando un bambino spera che io venga a salvarlo dai mostri. Ma ora so chi sono. E so che il mio viaggio non ha fine.
E voi… tenete gli occhi aperti, perché quando la nebbia arriva, Bigoulin potrebbe essere vicino.

Print PLA in PLA with A Giant Molecular Model Kit
It isn’t too often we post a hack that’s just a pure 3D print with no other components, but for this Giant Molecular Model kit by [3D Printy], we’ll make an exception. After all, even if you print with PLA every day, how often do you get to play with its molecular bonds? (If you want to see that molecule, check out the video after the break.)
There are multiple sizes of bonds to represent bond lengths, and two styles: flexible and firm. Flexible bonds are great for multiple covalent bonds, like carbon-carbon bonds in organic molecules. The bonds clip to caps that screw in to the atoms; alternately a bond-cap can screw the atoms together directly. A plethora of atoms is available, in valence values from one to four. The two-bond atom has 180 and 120-degree variations for greater accuracy. In terms of the chemistry this kit could represent, you’re only limited by your imagination and how long you are willing to spend printing atoms and bonds.
[3D Printy] was kind enough to release the whole lot as CC0 Public Domain, so we might be seeing these at craft fairs, as there’s nothing to keep you from selling the prints. Honestly, we can only hope; from an educational standpoint, this is a much better use of plastic than endless flexy dragons.
If you’d prefer your chemistry toys help you do chemistry, try this fidget spinner centrifuge. Perhaps you’d rather be teaching electronics instead?
