@DanadasGrau
This was my reply on Richard's blog at the time:

Me too, in a way. I was active in the UK Labour Party in the 90s and very involved personally in the ‘New Labour’ project – actively opposing ‘Militant’ – and in many ways I haven’t changed – still believe in a mixed economy, etc…

But I too have found myself on the left – partly because the political centre has moved right, but also I have to admit that I have moved, principally because emerging awareness of climate-ecological breakdown has to my mind made it simply rational to advocate more fundamental. and faster change.

Political feelings in the 90s were dominated by the collapse of the planned economy models in Eastern Europe. For most of us, New Labour was not primarily about moving to the right – it was about moving away from Morrisonian nationalisation towards anti-capitalist but market-oriented solutions like social enterprise: if market economies really out-performed planned economies, then make the market work ‘for the many, not the few’ (as the New Labour Clause 4 revision actually said – a revision, I argued, and would still argue, that moved it not so much rightwards, but away from the old statism).

But the political context is now very different. Events like the 2008 crash have shown that capitalism doesn’t work any better than planned economies; the rise of China (by conventional economic standards) and analyses like those of Ha-Joon Chang have shown that radical government intervention actually works rather better than ‘free markets’, and moreover, our increasing understanding of impending climate-ecological breakdown makes controlling capitalism and rethinking economic growth essential.

in reply to GeofCox

I’ve moved too, but I think our most urgent challenge is to explore new ways of reaching consensus on where we are, so that we can move at pace towards better fitting into where thermodynamic reality is taking us.

No signs of that from Westminster yet

The image depicts a cozy, medieval-style study room with a warm, inviting atmosphere. A person with red hair, wearing glasses, a white sweater, and plaid pants, is seated at a wooden desk, typing on a vintage typewriter. The desk is cluttered with books, papers, and a cup of coffee, with a lit candle providing additional light. Three small, friendly dragons are present: one perched on a chair draped with a white cloth, another hovering above the desk, and a third sitting on the floor holding a plate of food. The room is filled with bookshelves, a globe, and a knight's helmet, enhancing the scholarly ambiance. The window is adorned with red curtains, and the overall color palette is warm, with reds, browns, and yellows dominating the scene.

Losing your buildings, lodges and hunt camps in the wilderness on remote lands is devastating. Every bit of material that is taken out there costs more money than the original amount, many man hours and lots of effort to put these things place. It is not just monetary value it is essential and often times means life and death in the wilderness. My family and relatives still keep sites out on the land because it is part of the way of life in the north.

in reply to Highwaytohell

Turns out I had a copy, so I sent it to him as a surprise!

I was at the Main Street cafe a while back, and there were some yeehawdists at the table behind me going off about how Mexicans were taking their jobs, and I turned around and said, “Son, I know five farms that need help right now. I can make a phone call and you can be in the field in an hour. Now, bring a hat, it’s hot out here in the sun all day. And gloves, those plants will tear you up. To make minimum wage, you’ll have to hustle, you get paid by the bushel. You wanna finish lunch and go pick some maters, or you wanna shut the fuck up so I can eat my chicken fried steak in peace?”

They shut the fuck up. Silence until they left. And the cook sent me a peach cobbler. 🥳

Can anyone recommend me a similar tent like this? It should have enough space to comfortably fit a family of 4 people.

This is obviously for car camping. Weight is not important. Quality is though!

The roomy vestibule where you can sit and take shelter from bad weather is a hard requirement by my wife.

It's also important that it's certified Bluesign, or something similar. I don't want any harmful chemicals near my family.

It should also preferably be available in Sweden, or at least the EU.

Any recommendations? 😁

9 Sculptures You (Probably) Didn’t Know Existed

Which one is your favorite?

Split image showing two outdoor sculptures. Left: "Dignity" statue in South Dakota, USA, a 50-foot-tall stainless steel sculpture of a Native American woman with arms outstretched, draped in a star quilt of blue and silver diamond panels, set against a dramatic cloudy sky. Right: "Window and Ladder – Too Late for Help" by Leandro Erlich in Montevideo, Uruguay, featuring a floating brick wall fragment with a window and a tall white ladder extending from the ground up to it, placed in a grassy field with trees and an industrial building in the background.

From a 50-foot Native American monument overlooking the Missouri River to a surreal hammock strung across a border fence, these sculptures push the boundaries of form, meaning, and public space. Whether constructed from stone, steel, wire, or illusion, each work defies convention — and chances are, you haven’t seen them before. Locations span from Barcelona to Philadelphia, from South Dakota plains to Turkish landscapes.

3. Border Hammock — Murat Gök in Istanbul, Turkey

Two fence poles curve inward to cradle a man resting in a hammock made from the fence itself. By bending an otherwise rigid border element into a place of rest, the sculpture offers a quiet yet clever political statement.

Bronze sculpture on a city sidewalk in Philadelphia by Zenos Frudakis. Human figures emerge from a textured wall in a progression from entrapment to freedom, ending with a fully sculpted person stepping away.

4. Freedom — Zenos Frudakis in Philadelphia, USA

9. UMI — Daniel Popper in Lisle, Illinois, USA

This monumental figure is composed of sculpted wood and branches shaped into a female form. Her hands and body are formed by intertwining tree limbs, suggesting organic unity.
