As Catherine Milner suggests:
'the national curriculum seems designed to regiment & quash any nascent creative spirit, rearing generations that are materially & culturally illiterate'.
The anti-arts bias of our political class has patterned education in the UK for too long; if AI really does strip out menial mental work, then for many workers creativity will be the key to 'good work'!
Schools that cannot foster creativity are a betrayal of the young.

With non-destructive filters, you can apply, say, a blur, do lots of other stuff, then come back to the layer, click on the fx, and change the blur, or even remove it.

Я хочу рассказать про компьютерную игру.
Встречайте: свободный, бесплатный и улучшенный вариант Civilization V (ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Meie…) — Unciv.
⬇️ Скачать можно на гитхабе (github.com/yairm210/Unciv/rele…), либо, если для ведроида, то F-Droid (f-droid.org/en/packages/com.un…) или же гоглплее (play.google.com/store/apps/det…), для ценителей ithc.io (yairm210.itch.io/unciv) тоже есть.
Кто желает партейку-другую? ;)

The image depicts a dense forest scene with tall trees and a vibrant canopy. The sunlight filters through the leaves, creating a dappled effect on the forest floor. The trees have slender trunks with a mix of light and dark bark, and their leaves are a lush green, indicating a healthy, thriving ecosystem. The ground is covered with a variety of underbrush, including ferns and other green plants, adding to the richness of the scene. The sunlight appears to be coming from a low angle, suggesting it might be early morning or late afternoon. The overall atmosphere is serene and natural, with a sense of tranquility and untouched wilderness.

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •Why oh why does everything have to viewed in terms of economic growth? Can't we learn for the sake of it? Can't we even (gasp) learn something today and put it aside for a rainy day?
P.S. ditto "design"
Emeritus Prof Christopher May

Yes, education for education's sake is the humanist approach, certainly.... but ignoring the economics of work is a luxury not available to everyone - that said this issue of continuing economic growth is a different issue (which is why I pointed to 'good work' - as in the RSA report from some years ago)

To avoid the 'economics of work' you're going to need more that MMT, and even a UBI would be dependent on some workers actually paying the taxes to provide some level of UBI.... even in the quasi-communist states of 1930s/195os, the economics of work continued to be a thing.... so I'm not sure we'll be able to ignore it in our lifetimes

in reply to furniturelink • • •@furniturelink
Indeed, but that in no way would limit the economics of work... unless you have a society where the state controls all labour, and even then as an incentive there might well be different rates of pay even within single enterprise (see Yugoslavia's experiment with worker run industries in the 1950s/60s

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •Given a factory producing widgets with a cooperative structure would this work?
In the current year each member of the coop receives an equitable (*) monthly payment guaranteed by the Central Bank (**) based on last year's sales minus capital and input costs divided by the total membership.
* The membership to interpret 'equitable.'
** The Central Bank would charge an insurance fee to average fluctuations in annual sales (similar to how crop insurance works in Canada).
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to furniturelink • • •@furniturelink
Well, the answer is we don't need thought experiments, we can look either at the historical example from Yugoslavia, or we could look at Mondragon in Spain... in both cases co-operative structures still have retained (did retain) some level of pay hierarchy - so as you suggest the issue is what level of differentiation would still count as 'equitable'

Erm...
Typewriters.
Chimpanzees.
Shakespeare.
There'll be a lot of rubbish!
Then again: perhaps someone will instruct an AI program to produce a wonderful new suit of clothes (and the marketing spiel) for the Emperor Donald XLVII. 😉

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •What is "creative spark"?
I always hated art class in school, and it was a complete waste of time. I think that "art" should best be done (if one has the need) at home on ones own time, so school can be used more for work, and less for play.
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to h4890 • • •@h4890
Its an interesting issue; certainly my experience has been students who have been active in the arts at school often have better communications skills.... but, in a crowded curriculum many feel as you do.
My problem is the allowing a space for the 'creative spark' to is seen as a luxury while I think actually it is part of a humanistic education.
Whether it happens at home is often dependent on parents themselves having had encouragement to be creative when they were young(er).

I know this is going to sound like I'm avoiding an answer, but I really do think any time spent fostering creativity of any sort cannot (almost be definition) be a waste of time... which I know is avoiding answering with a criteria & threshold - sorry
h4890
in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •Well, in a way it _is_ an answer. Because if we cannot agree on what creativity is, how to facilitate it, and how to measure it, how can we teach it?
After all, there is creativity within math, physics, programming etc. it is something which is inherent in all human activities.
I think that the idea that children _have_ to doodle on a piece of paper in order to learn creativity is erroneous and not very productive when discussing education.
