Hey new people, you don't have to use the official Mastodon app! There are lots of other options you can use such as third party apps etc. Most people who try these alternatives usually prefer them.

Mastodon doesn't impose any particular app on you. You're free to use your account in whatever way works best for you. Here is a guide to all your options:

➡️ fedi.tips/which-apps-can-i-use…

If you want to compare apps, you can be logged in with the same account on many apps at once.

I've been surprised at how nice the web interface is, even on mobile. I haven't been in a rush to find a suitable app as a result.
in reply to Fedi.Tips

I've tried many apps and always come back to the web version which is fantastic. It's great that everyone has so much choice though.

@Steven Rowe 🇨🇦🇬🇧 This is damn true: unfortunately (or fortunately), with such a well-made web interface, there is no great need for an app. But this is only true for advanced users: for the majority of the public, if there is no app, then there is no service...

@notizie I always think the more I have on my computers or devices the greater chances they have of being buggered up. So I try to avoid overcrowding.

So I have numerous websites that in Safari ios I just go to a website then "set as home screen" - maybe there are many who don't know about this shortcut.

Personally I love @Tusky so much that I would use it even if it were a client for X (ok no, just kidding)

I'm currently trying out #Tuba on Linux and am enjoying it so far.

from what I understand, the official app is the only free one that’s made with a decent quality. Everything else is either shitty pet project with design from early 2000s or a paid/freemium app
in reply to Jang Leerang

@Jang Leerang among the things you said there are several approximations or real malicious exaggerations.

The official app is not only not the only decent free app, but it has limitations that make the user experience very problematic for an average advanced user.

The real added value of the "official" app is due to the ergonomic and functional study that has made it easier to use the Fediverse for those users accustomed to centralized social networks with zero knowledge.

There are niche projects, but apps like Tushi and Moshidon are of excellent quality and even Raccoon for Friendica has that very refined design that distinguishes paid apps and some innovative features (easy viewing of Activitypub groups, lateral scrolling of messages, formatting bar for enhanced Mastodon forks) that not even paid apps have!

Finally, Fedilab is certainly an app with an old design, but it is a real Swiss army knife that allows you to get more features than the web interface

you forgot to mention that if I'm on iOS - I'm not real fedi member or not fedi enough and I deserve to pay "apple tax"

@leerang

No, that's not the case. At least in my experience, most people who try third party apps prefer them to the official app and there are plenty of good free apps too.

Things like Tusky, Ice Cubes, Moshidon, Fedilab etc are excellent and have features missing from the official app.

in reply to Fedi.Tips

@leerang Even for a web interface, I highly prefer Phanpy over the regular Mastodon site (I'm writing through it right now, it's the interface I always use)
in reply to Fedi.Tips

apparently of those only Ice Cubes is present on iOS and it has "in-app purchases"

@leerang @pachli is good, and fixes my duplicated "load missing posts" problem i was having on the official app.

@notizie @fnbsydney

No seriously can anyone recommend a decent mastodon client for iOS with advanced features you mention and with no paywalls?

Or is it really a thing that "fediverse is not for those who agree to give their money to the evil corps like Apple"?

Literally every single app mentioned in this thread or the original article (except for Ice Cubes) are android apps.

@leerang @chewie

Ice Cubes doesn't have a "paywall". The in app purchases are optional tips to the developer which are just tips, they're not tied to any features.

in reply to Jang Leerang

oh, ios, you should have said!

Moble apps from @MonaApp and @ivory are great — and worth the annual subscription price because devs gotta eat!

I have been really loving phanpy.social. It even installs as a PWA. It's not a different server, just a different interface.

@JoeTennies

Yup, a number of people have recommended it and I've listed it in the article above (in the web interfaces section).

@daisE

I use Toot on my iPhone and my iPad and I’m happy with it.

I'm 3 days into this, and am learning as I go. Thank you. Now there's more info I need to learn! But I'll get there.
