A Life-Saving Vest for our Pirate friends in Hungary: How can you help?

The Hungarian Two-tailed Dog Party (MKKP) has always been about more than just politics; they are a creative community dedicated to producing actual results—like painting broken sidewalks or building bus stops—rather than just reacting to “who said what”. However, as many of you know, they are currently facing a serious financial challenge. Despite their efforts and their previous elections’ results (2,6% in the 2019 European elections and 3,2% in 2022 national parliamentary elections) they have unfortunately not reached 1% of the votes. Due to this, the law requires them to pay back their entire campaign budget.

We have three major updates on our Pirate friends’ situation and how we can work together to keep the “Dog” running.

1. Their Debt Update

The good news is that MKKP have officially started paying back their debt. The total amount they owe the government is approximately 1.8 million EUR. Thanks to their supporters, they have successfully completed their first major transaction of roughly 425,000 EUR.

This brings their remaining debt down to 1.4 million EUR. Even better, because of this significant payment, the interest rates have dropped dramatically, making the path forward much more manageable.

2. Taking It to the Courtroom

They aren’t just sitting back. They are also fighting this matter legally.

MKKP’s legal team has filed both formal and substantive complaints regarding the debt and the way the law has been applied.

The formal complaints argue that the authorities failed to present the evidence that triggered the procedure, did not properly inform the party when the procedure began, and denied MKKP the opportunity to exercise its right to comment before the decision was made.

The substantive complaints challenge the law itself, arguing that it is incompatible with Hungary’s Fundamental Law because the payment obligation creates a “chilling effect” on political participation. According to MKKP, the stated purpose of the law is to deter opportunistic parties that enter elections solely for financial gain. In practice, however, the law has the opposite effect: rather than discouraging opportunistic parties that exploit legal loopholes, it disproportionately penalises parties that have spent years building a genuine voter base and participating in democratic life.

Through these legal challenges, MKKP is seeking not only to contest its own debt but also to challenge the broader impact of the law on political engagement.

3. A Life-Saving Vest: International Support Options

To survive this, they need to reach beyond Hungary’s borders. They are launching two ways for our international friends to help:

• Their Global Webshop is open: The webshop is accessible to everyone in the world! The store is selling both digital and non-digital products. Whether you want something to wear or something to download, every single purchase directly helps our Hungarian members to repay the campaign money to the government.
• The “WhyDonate” Candidate Campaign: Unfortunately, if they don’t manage to crowdfund the amount as a political party, the debt might fall on the shoulders of the individual candidates. This is why a group of our candidates has formed a special team to launch a WhyDonate campaign. They are raising funds to assume the debt themselves, but they’ve made a beautiful pledge: if these donations are not needed for the debt, they will be donated to Hungarian charity organizations.

Why It Matters

The Hungarian Two-tailed Dog Party believes in a Hungary where people can laugh at problems instead of feeling hopeless. They have spent years using their resources for the community—from operating help tents for refugees to redecorating trash piles so they get picked up. Now, they need that community to help them stay alive.
