Tuttavia in Italia il nome di Friendica è ancora sconosciuto alla maggior parte di coloro che potrebbero sfruttarne le grandi potenzialità: gli utenti di Facebook!
Come per tutte le piattaforme software alla base del cosiddetto Fediverso (quell’ecosistema di piattaforme in grado di comunicare reciprocamente), è possibile installare il software in una qualsiasi macchina collegata a internet e gestire una istanza (questo il termine tecnico) di Friendica che potrà essere messa in condizione di comunicare con tutte le altre istanze Friendica, ma anche con tutte le altre istanze del fediverso basate sul protocollo ActivityPub (mastodon, pixelfed, peertube, mobilizon, diaspora, matrix, etc).
Questa particolare caratteristica della “filosofia” del fediverso, comporta che, mentre oggi un utente Twitter non è in grado di interagire con un utente Facebook né un utente Instagram è in grado di interagire con un canale Youtube, un utente Friendica può seguire un account Peertube, un utente Mastodon può rispondere a un utente Pixelfed, e così via!
Naturalmente è la comunità degli utenti più che quella degli sviluppatori a rendere vivo un progetto e il passaparola è sempre stato il modo più importante per creare un pubblico.

Fino ad agosto 2021, malgrado in giro per il mondo vi fossero decine di migliaia di utenti attivi, il numero delle istanze italiane è ancora limitato a tre. A queste tre, noi di InformaPirata ne abbiamo aggiunta una, Poliverso, dedicata alla discussione su politica e diritti digitali (che speriamo possa ospitare una comunità plurale ma selezionata per interessi), ma vi sono ampi margini affinché si creino altre istanze tematiche o generaliste!
I quattro server pubblici Friendica in italiano sono ancora pochi
Per questo motivo abbiamo deciso di tradurre in italiano un bellissimo post scritto da Tio, un utente Friendica che ha avuto modo di testare e stressare a lungo questa piattaforma social molto promettente.
Ho scritto di recente questo blog su cos’è il Fediverse e perché è così fantastico, insieme a come ho creato un mostro per automatizzare la nostra pagina Friendica TROM e il mio account personale per postare ovunque (Facebook, Twitter, TROM Live, my Live). Ieri abbiamo avuto un TROMcast davvero eccezionale con le persone dietro Friendica e Mastodon e Disroot.org . E voglio scrivere una breve “guida per principianti” a Friendica, perché amo Friendica 😀. E le persone dietro il progetto sono super amichevoli.
Prima di tutto, crea un account per provarlo.
Esistono molte “istanze” quindi puoi scegliere quale. Personalmente consiglio venera.social (NB: ora l’utente Tio si è trasferito su http://social.trom.tf , ndr). Funziona alla grande e il ragazzo dietro il progetto sembra un essere umano molto simpatico. Registrati e attendi l’approvazione. Lo so, sembra una rottura di coglioni aspettare l’approvazione, ma fidati di me su questo. Sarà un’approvazione rapida e lo fanno in modo da mantenere queste istanze belle e pulite. Il tuo account sarà approvato al 100%.
Modifica il tuo account.
Dopo che sei stato approvato, passa semplicemente attraverso le tue impostazioni e configura le cose. È molto meglio di Facebook, più facile da capire e molto pulito. Puoi scegliere di bloccare i contenuti in base alla lingua, alle parole, puoi scegliere chi può vedere i tuoi post e così via. Dipende da te come impostarlo. Calmati. Senza fretta. Non devi fare nulla se non vuoi e puoi apportare modifiche nel tempo. È il tuo bambino caro.
Inizia a seguire persone e organizzazioni.
Questo è ciò per cui sei lì. Ma come trovarli? Non essere come un orso affamato che entra in una casa e vuole mangiare tutto ciò che trova, e se non trova molto se ne va. Sii un orso gentile, civile e sano di mente e in quella casa mangerai cibo molto buono e non ingrasserai. Per cominciare potete seguirci, gente di TROM. Sasha, Shas, Aaron, io, Alexio e soprattutto il nostro TROM (indirizzo modificato, ndr). Quindi guarda attraverso il nostro elenco di contatti e aggiungi più persone. Lascia che cresca lentamente e in modo organico. Nelle impostazioni dei contatti, puoi cercare le persone in base agli interessi (parole chiave). Lascia che cresca lentamente e dico questo. Potresti essere usato con Facebook e il folle flusso di informazioni che inghiotte tutta la tua vita. Questo è un modo per iniziare come nuovo di zecca e incontrare nuove persone. È come trasferirsi da New York (facebook) in un piccolo villaggio carino. Vedrai, la vita è migliore lì ;).
La parte fantastica che mi tiene personalmente lì.
Friendica apre le porte a quasi tutte le reti federate. Supponi di trovare un account Mastodon nativo. Copia l’URL nella barra di ricerca di Friendica, quindi semplicemente seguilo. Fai lo stesso per qualsiasi altra rete federata. Ora puoi interagire con queste persone (inviare messaggi privati, vedere i loro post nel tuo feed, commentarli, mettere mi piace, condividere, ecc.).
Segui i siti web!
Sì! Puoi. Praticamente qualsiasi sito Web (poiché la maggior parte ha un feed RSS). Copia il nostro URL di videoneat.com, o tromjaro.com, tiotrom.com, bigworldsmallsasha.com, trade-free.org/directory, o qualsiasi altro che ti piace, nella pagina dei contatti e segui. Potrai vedere i post nel tuo feed ogni volta che questi siti web pubblicano nuovi contenuti. Fantastico! Puoi anche modificare le impostazioni per ciascuno di questi siti Web, individualmente. Ad esempio, puoi impostare la frequenza con cui ricevi aggiornamenti da loro, se desideri ricevere una notifica quando pubblicano qualcosa di nuovo o formattare l’aspetto dei post.
A volte, se questi siti web lo supportano, puoi vedere i loro interi articoli nel tuo feed, quindi non c’è bisogno di andare ai loro siti web. Ti consiglio di selezionare “recupera informazioni e parole chiave” in modo da poter vedere i loro post come un riepilogo e un collegamento all’articolo originale. E infine, puoi scegliere di ricondividere automaticamente qualsiasi post di questi siti Web sul tuo profilo, se lo desideri. O come i tuoi post.
Segui Twitter! (FUNZIONALITA’ NON PRESENTE IN TUTTE LE ISTANZE, NDR)
Se hai un account Twitter, ora è il momento di non usare mai twitter.com ma usalo attraverso la tua Friendica. Vai su Impostazioni – Social Network e fai clic sulla scheda Twitter. Collegati al tuo Twitter (facile, pochi secondi). Ora dovresti scegliere “consenti la pubblicazione su twitter” e “importare la timeline remota”. Come mai? Perché ora se vuoi seguire qualcuno su Twitter, copia semplicemente l’URL di Twitter, l’intera cosa, nella stessa pagina dei contatti e seguilo. E vedrai i loro post nella tua cronologia. Facile.
Puoi rispondere a questi account Twitter da Friendica e interagire con loro da lì. Fantastico. Seguo già alcuni account Twitter e funziona alla grande.
Segui le pagine Facebook e non solo! (FUNZIONALITA’ NON NATIVA MA UTILIZZABILE ATTRAVERSO IL SERVIZIO RSS.BRIDGE, NDR)
Non puoi seguire persone/pagine di Facebook in modo “nativo” e interattivo, ma c’è un modo per farlo quando queste sono pubbliche. Vai al nostro servizio RSS-Bridge qui . Cerca Facebook Bridge | Sito principale. Ora fai clic su “Mostra altro”. E aggiungi il nome di una pagina Facebook che vuoi seguire come mostro qui sotto. “nome utente” è il nome della pagina.
Ora fai clic su “Html”. Verrai reindirizzato a una nuova pagina dove potrai vedere i post di quella pagina come tali.
Fare clic con il pulsante destro del mouse sulla signora e quindi su Copia collegamento. È tutto. Ora hai il link RSS di quella pagina Facebook. Vai alla tua pagina dei contatti e aggiungilo lì. Quindi fare clic su “connetti”. Come aggiungere contatti o siti web.
Ed è così che puoi seguire pagine Facebook o profili pubblici. Usa quel ponte RSS. Non puoi commentare/interagire con questi, ma beh… almeno puoi seguirli. Ho suggerito agli sviluppatori amici di Friendica di aggiungere l’RSS-Bridge come addon a Friendica, in modo che se vuoi seguire un utente/pagina sia facile come incollare l’URL di Facebook nel modulo “aggiungi nuovo contatto” e il il resto è magia.
Segui l’intero Internet!
Segui Youtube, gli aggiornamenti dei plugin di WordPress, l’articolo quotidiano di Wikipedia o “lo sapevi?”, le pagine VK, Vimeo, le foto di Unsplash, puoi persino seguire gli utenti e le pagine di Twitter senza un account o persino seguire gli hashtag… puoi seguire i gruppi pubblici di Telegram, o quando vengono aggiunti nuovi contenuti alla rete BitTorrent (ad esempio, se vuoi sapere quando un nuovo episodio di qualsiasi serie di documentari ti piaccia, è disponibile su torrent). Segui Sub-Reddits, o anche PornHub; segui le ultime versioni su FDroid e molto altro ancora. Ti sto dicendo che questo RSS-Bridge è fantastico e puoi usarlo come proxy per connettere la tua Friendica praticamente a tutta Internet.
Quindi sì … lentamente puoi aggiungere tutte le cose che vuoi ai tuoi amici / follower. Crea un flusso di ciò che ami da Internet.
Facebook, Twitter, Youtube e simili, pensavano che le persone dovessero essere imboccate con un cucchiaio. Aspetti che ti nutrano, e questo ha portato a un mondo in cui ciò che consumi è sempre ciò che queste piattaforme ti danno da mangiare. E lo fanno in base ai propri interessi, non ai tuoi. E finisci per non essere in grado di controllare quel cucchiaio ->>
Ci vuole un po’ di tempo per trasferirsi in un posto come Friendica. Ma non tanto quanto potresti pensare. Tuttavia, devi abituarti a nutrirti. Prendi quel cucchiaio. Scegli il tuo cibo. Vedrai che a lungo termine fa un’enorme differenza.
I wrote this blog recently about what the Fediverse is and why it is so awesome, together with how I created a monster to automate our Friendica TROM page and my personal account to post everywhere (Facebook, Twitter, TROM Live, my Live). Yesterday we had a really great TROMcast with the people behind Friendica and Mastodon, and Disroot.org. And I want to write a brief “beginner guide” to Friendica, because I love Friendica 😀. And the people behind the project are super friendly.
First of all, make an account to give it a try.
There are many “instances” so you can choose whichever. I personally recommend venera.social. It works great and the guy behind the project seems like a very nice human. Register and wait for approval. I know, it seems like a pain in the ass to wait for approval, but trust me on this. It is going to be a fast approval and they do that so that they keep these instances nice and clean. Your account will be approved 100%.
Tweak your account.
After you are approved simply go through your settings and set up stuff. It is a lot better than Facebook and easier to grasp and very clean. You can choose to block content based on language, words, you can choose who can see your posts and such. It is up to you how you set this up. Take it easy. No rush. You don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to, and you can do any changes in time. It is your baby dear.
Start to follow people and organizations.
This is what you are there for. But how can you find them? Don’t be like a hungry bear that goes into a house and wants to eat everything it finds, and if it does not find much, it goes away. Be a nice, civilized, and sane bear and you’ll get to eat in that house very good food and not get fat. For starters you can follow us, people from TROM. Sasha, Shas, Aaron, me, Alexio and more importantly our TROM page. Then look through our contact list and add more people. Let it grow slowly and organically. In the contacts settings, you can search people based on interests (keywords). Let it grow slowly and I mean that. You may be used with Facebook and the crazy of influx of information that engulfs your entire life. This is a way for you to start as brand new and meet new people. It is like moving from New York (facebook) to a small nice village. You’ll see, life is better there ;).
The awesome part that keeps me personally there.
Friendica opens the doors to pretty much any Federated network. Say you find a Mastodon account in the wild. Copy the url to your Friendica search bar then simply follow them. Do the same for any other Federated network. Now you can interact with these people (send private messages, see their posts in your feed, comment to them, like, share, etc.).
Follow websites!
Yah! You can. Pretty much any website (since most have an RSS feed). Copy our videoneat.com url, or tromjaro.com, tiotrom.com, bigworldsmallsasha.com, trade-free.org/directory, or any other that you like, into the contacts page and just follow. You’ll get to see the posts in your feed whenever these websites post new stuff. How cool! You can also tweak the settings for each such website, individually. For example you can set up how frequently you get updates from them, if you want to get a notification when they post something new, or format how the posts should look like.
At times, if these websites support it, you can see their entire articles in you feed so no need to go to their websites. I recommend you select “fetch information and keywords” so you get to see their posts as a summary and link to the original article. And lastly, you can select to auo-reshare any of these websites’ posts on your profile if you wish. Or as your own posts.
Follow Twitter!
If you have a Twitter account, now is the time to never use twitter.com but use it through your Friendica. Go to Settings – Social Networks and click the Twitter tab. Connect to your Twitter (easy, a few seconds). Now you should choose “allow posting on twitter” and “import the remote timeline”. Why? Because now if you want to follow someone on Twitter, simply copy their twitter url, the entire thing, into the same contacts page and follow them. And you’ll see their posts in your timeline. Easy.
You can reply to these Twitter accounts from Friendica and interact with them from there. Super cool. I already follow a few Twitter accounts and works great.
Follow Facebook pages and more!
You cannot follow people/pages from Facebook in a “native” and interactive way, but there is a way you can do that when these are public. Go to our RSS-Bridge service here. Search for Facebook Bridge | Main Site. Now click “show more”. And add a Facebook page name that you want to follow as I showcase bellow. “username” is the page name.
Now click “Html”. You will be redirected to a new page where you can see the posts of that page as such.
Right click the Mrss and then Copy Link. That’s all. Now you have the RSS link of that Facebook page. Go to your contacts page and add it there. Then click “connect”. Same as adding any contacts or websites.
And that’s how you can follow Facebook pages or public profiles. Use that RSS-Bridge. You cannot comment/interact with these, but well…at least you can follow them. I suggested to Friendica-friendy developers to add the RSS-Bridge as an addon to Friendica, so that if you want to follow a user/page to be as easy as pasting the facebook URL into the “add new contact” form, and the rest is magic.
Follow the entire internet!
Follow Youtube, WordPress plugins updates, Wikipedia daily article or “did you know?”, VK pages, Vimeo, photos from Unsplash, you can even follow Twitter users and pages without an account or even follow hashtags….you can follow Telegram public groups, or when new stuff is added to the BitTorrent network (like say you want to know when a new episode from whatever documentary series you like, is available on torrents). Follow Sub-Reddits, or even PornHub; follow the latest releases on FDroid and sooo much more. I am telling you, this RSS-Bridge is amazing and you can use it as a proxy for connecting your Friendica to pretty much the entire internet.
So yah…slowly you can add up as much stuff to your friends/follows as you want. Create a stream of what you love from the entire Internet.
Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and the like, thought people that they should be spoon fed. You wait for them to feed you, and that led to a world where what you consume is always what these platforms are feeding you. And they do that based on their own interests, not yours. And you end up being unable to control that spoon ->>
It takes a bit of time to move to a place like Friendica. But not as much as you might think. However, you have to get used to feed yourself. Grab that spoon. Choose your food. You will see that it makes a huge difference in the long term.
