We've been on X/Twitter for many years, but it's time to reduce our activity there and instead promote Mastodon as our main social media channel now. So we've done just that: x.com/LibreOffice/status/20262โ€ฆ โ€“ Welcome to all our new followers here ๐Ÿ˜Š
in reply to LibreOffice

Donโ€™t be surprised if you get a reprimand for that on X. And the question remains how many of your followers will see it there.
in reply to Matthew ๐Ÿ––

@mcbaumwolle They're just desperately trying to excuse nole ksum doing anything and everything to drive projects and users off of the platform.

I'm so glad I don't not use X and my account on their is basically dead.

in reply to Cameron Bosch

@mcbaumwolle Based on what I can see here, you might as well cut X use off completely. xcancel.com/LibreOffice/statusโ€ฆ

Wise choice! ;)

welcome! i can tell by the replies on twitter that the people there are totally not mad and we should definitely not put in the newspaper that they got mad

Oblomov reshared this.

in reply to Eniko Fox

@eniko
that ยซMastodon is fascist social mediaยป is really *chef kiss*
in reply to Oblomov

@oblomov @eniko I really wonder what the reasoning is. But not enough to ever go back to that site and ask
in reply to LibreOffice

XCancel link for those who don't have a Xitter account anymore and are still curious about the replies:

xcancel.com/LibreOffice/statusโ€ฆ

in reply to Oblomov

@oblomov funny, although unsurprising that X users think Mastodon is too hard to use, or otherwise bad.

It's nice hanging out here with the other geniuses who can figure out how to use it.

in reply to Gary Houston

@ghouston @oblomov
We'll, that twitter post has less replies and discussion than this post. ๐Ÿคท

Otoh, the deranged replies over there are far much funnier.

in reply to Gary Houston

@ghouston @oblomov I do find it strange that there seems to just be this accepted wisdom that 'Mastodon is a usability nightmare'.. parroted widely, including by those who claim to love open source and have tried it. I just don't see it.
in reply to STP

@SciPolTech @ghouston I can see how people used to be force-fed โ€œcontentโ€ with minimal or no effort can find a platform where you have to actually make choices is โ€œdifficultโ€.

Andre123 reshared this.

in reply to Oblomov

@oblomov @SciPolTech @ghouston
Brain death ? It's curious (and somehow scary) that people would be scared from the freedom to make free choices.....๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Oblomov reshared this.

@andre123 "choosing what to eat is hard and I'm hungry now, just stitch the sewage pipe directly to my mouth"?

@SciPolTech ๐Ÿคฃ brutal, but somehow correct (unfortunately)
@STP
in reply to STP

@SciPolTech

I don't think that people are lying?

You could argue that they "just" need to put in a bit more effort, but maybe it's best to find ways to further improve the user experience?

There's some really low hanging fruit, like github.com/mastodon/mastodon/iโ€ฆ.

@ghouston @oblomov @libreoffice

in reply to Stefan Bohacek

@stefan @ghouston @oblomov yeah, I'm all in favour of usability improvements. Nothing complex is ever finished and certainly not perfect. I just don't see how anyone who can function unaided in the general world can't use mastodon, especially someone who has used Twitter / X. Really the only 'issues' I can imagine are initial uncertainty about choosing an instance, and the fact that 'feed' will be very quiet unless / until you proactively populate it.

Oblomov reshared this.

in reply to STP

@SciPolTech I don't really have much more to add here, just that this attitude of disbelief is not very helpful, and contributes to people's view of the fediverse as gatekeepy and condescending.

Better to listen to people, trust them, and think creatively about how to address their problems.

@ghouston @oblomov @libreoffice

in reply to STP

@stefan I hope and tend to assume unless shown otherwise that outright lying may is rare, but I do strongly suspect that some people who parrot the 'unusable' line have put zero (or close to) effect in to really trying it.
in reply to STP

@SciPolTech

"put zero (or close to) effect in to really trying it"

In other words: "You're just doing it wrong."

We need more empathy. We all have different needs and priorities in life. Being better at computers and having the time to invest into learning new things don't make anyone superior in any way.

@STP
in reply to Stefan Bohacek

@stefan that is all fair, and I certainly support having empathy, assuming good faith, etc. The meaning of my comments are essentially that in my honest opinion Mastodon doesn't have a significantly higher barrier to entry or steeper learning curve than other 'social media' platforms. Additionally, read through the comments on @libreoffice X post and it's hard to avoid the conclusion that there is quite a bit of bad faith / trolling going on in addition to genuine preference for X over Mastodon
in reply to STP

@SciPolTech @stefan absolutely, and remember that this book apparently needed to exist 10 years ago:
in reply to Chewie

@chewie Well.

dummies.com/book/technology/soโ€ฆ

@SciPolTech @libreoffice

in reply to Stefan Bohacek

@stefan @SciPolTech @ghouston @oblomov people are "lying" because they're discounting that their friend groups are the ones who educate them.

"There's this new site called Facebook, let me help you sign up." Followed by "everyone can see the message you just wrote. ๐Ÿ˜ณ Let me show you how to..." etc.

Expecting zero friction is exhausting.

Oblomov reshared this.

in reply to wavefunction

@wavefunction I don't know, I'm still just not really convinced that people lying about how difficult Mastodon/fediverse is being a major reason people prefer Bluesky.

But then you also say people expect zero friction.

Is this actually true? Any way to back this up?

People complain about user experience on Bluesky all the time. No edit button. No private posts. Etc. And as Bluesky slowly works towards greater decentralization, we'll see more challenges.

But I trust that there will be more attention put towards easing those there, rather than blame the user.

in reply to Oblomov

@oblomov Damn LibreOffice, sorry people over there are such weird dicks about doing something you believe in!

Welcome to the Fediverse! It's a fun time!

in reply to Oblomov

@oblomov wow, there is a lot of hate and ignorant nonsense there (and some everywhere, but that's pretty concentrated). Anyway, I'm glad to see you prioritising open tools as well as keeping up the good work of making them.
in reply to LibreOffice

glad you made the step ๐Ÿ˜€

(Ignore the inevitable "about time!"-people)

in reply to LibreOffice

Nice move. Twitter is only "good" if you ignore the spammy accounts, blue check monetized accounts, rage baiters, ai bots, engagements farmers, vague posters, its owner and his bootlickers, and I'm sure I forgot many more.
in reply to LibreOffice

@simonjay Congrats, even if itโ€™s late. The Fediverse is the obvious choice for FOSS.
in reply to Clarissa

@clarissawam Well, we've been on here since 2019 ๐Ÿ˜‰ And just as active here โ€“ if not more, due to the more technical audience here.
in reply to LibreOffice

Very good well done. May I suggest that you cut your ties entirely?
It will be a lot healthier for you.

in reply to LibreOffice

First of all, thanks for the great tools you give to the whole planet! We love you ๐Ÿ˜˜

What we've done here is that we kept our accounts open with only one post pointing to the Social Medias that we keep active.

Perhaps, it would make your life easier to do the same and forget about toxic-X?

in reply to LibreOffice

how about reducing it to zero? Why stay there at all when you know what type of place it is?
in reply to LibreOffice

took a while, but welcome.

based libreoffice once again Iโ€™m going to leave twitter as well soon .
in reply to LibreOffice

For anyone interested in the perverse denialism of the people stuck on the platform formerly known as Twitter, this conversation is quite a case study:
nitter.net/LibreOffice/status/โ€ฆ

Starts out with a critical X user who is, you should know, "very pro-open source in privacy". Others are concerned that Fediverse engagement might be skewed by "more bots than here", and of course the all-time great "If you want true decentralized social media then it is Nostr".

People are beyond saving.
@libreoffice

in reply to Stian

@sab itโ€™s twitter they want to argue on even the smallest thing possible.
in reply to mymy_forever

Yeah, I have never really cared about the platform so maybe I'm too easily amazed by whatever sociological phenomenon is going on there. But some real people are still on there among the bots and trolls, and I profoundly wonder what has happened to their brains to make them tolerate being on a site like this.
@theoneisrightlad @libreoffice
in reply to Stian

@sab @theoneisrightlad
it's more difficult for bots to spread here, because you don't see in the home timeline the posts of accounts that you don't follow.
and people tend to avoid to follow bots.
in reply to LibreOffice

This is fantastic news! I used to use OpenOffice ages ago. Because of your Mastodon announcement, I'm going to get a copy of LibreOffice and see if I can ditch you-know-who again!
in reply to LibreOffice

all the feedback/followers addicts will comment. Itโ€™s OK we donโ€™t want them here.
in reply to LibreOffice

"I've tried Mastodon, which is not at all user-friendly" yeah sure. x is so much more user-friendly.
in reply to LibreOffice

wow the amount of bad reasons to stay on twitter and criticize alternatives is astounding.

so many indoctrination by large commercial platforms, wow, I absolutely do not regret leaving!

in reply to LibreOffice

Good good

I love libreoffice, and have ever since it replaced openoffice.

Never had twitter so nice to see you here, and a good place to keep getting all the interesting updates and news

in reply to LibreOffice

Glad to see you taking a stand, will continue to use your wares for as long as we can.

in reply to LibreOffice

I wanted to ask for years. Is there a simple edition of LibreOffice? "LibreOffice SE"

Or is there a way I can have all the options I don't use or don't understand thrown out?

I would like to pay, perhaps others too. Am happy to contribute a bit to a crowdfunding.

in reply to LibreOffice

Welcome to Mastodon! Great to see the shift and continued commitment to open and community-driven platforms. Looking forward to your updates here ๐Ÿ˜Š
in reply to LibreOffice

Why does it seem like more and more people are leaving X or at least minimizing their activities there?
in reply to LibreOffice

thanks & good to see you here, as your system was my first introduction to the Linux sphere about 20 years ago!
in reply to LibreOffice

1. Welcome. Great software. Hope you get what you're after here.

2. You are displaying such savvy use of social media that it would be best if you were Donald Trump's social media advisor.
(The linked twitter post has been deleted. And the anti-savvy of posting a link on Mastodon to your Nazi-bar twitter post is awesome. In a bad way. Less cool than posting a dick pic in your intro.)

Edit: Following as I love libreoffice. And I love seeing trainwrecks in which no one is harmed.

It's interesting how people over there are claiming no one is here, Mastodon is too hard to use, blah blah blahโ€”meanwhile, this post here is getting significantly more engagement than that post over there.

Anyway, thank you for doing the right thing. โค๏ธ

in reply to Steve Foerster ๐ŸŒ

@SteveFoerster
seriously the replies are hilarious

"So please delete your account here, otherwise stop annoying people with your moral compass"

"Decentralized is not the future"

"I never understood why Open Source should mean pretending to be poor and small"

"Mastadon is already quite terrible when you start with it I fucking hate INSTANCES"

"But Mastodon is communist"

"Mastodon is fascist social media"

๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿคฃ

i do NOT miss twitter

in reply to Iswyrm

@iswyrm @SteveFoerster
right and if i were still on twitter it would be debilitating

but after having not been on twitter in years it's funny because it's so stupid

I think 1.5K boosts and 2.3K favorites proves people actually do use Mastodon.

I've read the first few replies. Nothing unexpected. There's no one in Mastodon, you have to stay in X, etc.

You know what, the Internet is large and if you want to know about something you will add it to your RSS or open an account in another network. News sites still exist and LO shows up there too.

in reply to LibreOffice

amazing initiative on your part! I just wish @protonprivacy did that too ๐Ÿ˜€

๐Ÿ‘ @libreoffice Am I understanding this correctly?
You are โ€œreducingโ€ your activities on #X/#Twitter, but not deleting your account?
Why not?
in reply to LibreOffice

glad to see y'all getting on the fediverse. Make sure you follow and reply to interesting people, the lack of an algorithmic feed does require a different style of social media use.
in reply to LibreOffice

How about reducing it to zero. We have (or most of us anyway).
in reply to LibreOffice

A simple screenshot would allow us to see your X.com post, without being required to leave #Mastodon to see it. I appreciate the link, though, as it could provide evidence that what you said is true, but I did not click it.

I support this decision to use a #decentralized network.
