The Animal and the Machine
in reply to Randahl Fink • • •Here we go!
Trump failing to ensure America defends Europe has now cost Google €4.125bn.
It won’t be long for the Google tax, where they actually get taxed annually by Europe.

I do not think this is related at all.
The Animal and the Machine
in reply to Randahl Fink • • •It is. Since the Second World War, every time a European nation has tried to regulate or tax the exploitative nature of the US firms, the US has quietly spoke to the government and said they will be at the back of the defence queue.
The US inherited the defence of Europe from the Second World War yet we still rely on it? Why. Why does the US pay for it? Europe does but by another mechanism. In the deal, ‘the peace dividend’ was actually Europe not spending on defence, which the US wants. The US wants the army to fight the Communists. It’s supported by large ecconmy which is boosted by the favourable terms with Europe.
America has the control of the military and the boost from Europe. Europe’s on desire to not be exploitative means Silicon Valley can only be in the US. Europe can’t compete with the aggressive exploitation of people. Europes boost is from not spending on military while the opportunity cost is invisible (except to me apparently).
But you can’t have your cake and eat it. Trump has eaten the cake. Google who doesn’t want billions in tax funds the millions in campaign funds. America is sewn up. They then ask the president to talk to Europe. The threat is not normally lack of protection but exit, so European nation’s budget for hospitals has to be directed to defence.
Now the US President is weaker as confidence is lost. Google asked the President, the President asks Europe, Europe says ‘or what?’ Nothing.
Europe is spending €1tn+as EU and probably €1tn internally and is freed from this political control of the US.
This means gate is shut on Google. Fines. Tax. And a European Silicon Valley. It has already started.

For a large company that wants to continue operating in the EU, it is impossible to owe money to the union.

Thousand = 1,000
Million = 1,000,000
Billion = 1,000,000,000
But yes, if the program had been communicated in for instance German, French or Danish, a billion would be 1,000,000,000,000

There should be way less people alienated before something significant happening to Google. I don't think there's a place on earth someone can think what this company does is right after understanding the moral, privacy and sovereignty implications of what they force down our throat year after year. But stuff don't get into regular people radar.

in reply to Randahl Fink • • •I'll believe it when we're told that the fine has actually been paid.
Regulators (of various kinds) are always making these big announcements about fines that have been issued, but I pretty well never see any announcements of fines that have actually been paid (years or decades later when the appeals have been exhausted).
