Post muto.

I racconti: memoria, psicologia e antropologia
3. Il gioco degli opposti
Presenza/assenza, pace/violenza, pazienza/rivolta.
Contrasti che producono emozione, nostalgia e riflessione.
4. Dimensione domestica
Lingua e memoria collettiva come eredità intergenerazionale.
6. Stile e tono emotivo

Melting 12VHPWR Connector Claims its First AMD RX 9070 XT Victim
It appears as though AMD has also fallen prey to the melting 12VHPWR connector issues that plagued the NVIDIA RTX 4000 and 5000-series cards. Although very few AMD graphics card makers used the 12VHPWR connector for the Radeon RX 7000 series, adoption rates for the new connection standard increased with the release of the RX 9070 and 9070 XT. What appears to be first recorded instance of a melted 12VHPWR connector on an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT has been posted to the r/Radeon subreddit by a user who goes by u/Savings_Opportunity3.

Someone (well, something) who doesn't violate you because he can't, not because he wouldn't, is not a good example.
Like, Thomas Edison didn't sell me out using his light bulb. Not because he was a good person, because he physically couldn't. If he were alive today he absolutely would.

And to continue my reply to your other comment, using libre office or an alternative won't have that rallying cry effect, since you're doing it on your own.
It sounds dumb but many people won't do what they believe is right if they're alone and if the alternative is easier.
Try to forget about the weird mascot choice. It's just a rallying cry.
I also don't really get why the clippy and he probably could have picked a better avatar for people to use.
The point is (I think) that people who know what it's about will feel the support of all these strangers sharing their view, and people who don't know might look it up and get sensibilized to the cause.

Yep, not just there. I don't know if it's going to change anything fundamental but I agree with the sentiment and if nothing else, it's a statement of solidarity with other people who might feel like everybody around them is giving in to the slopshittification.
I don't know what being American or otherwise has to do with it btw.

I agree with what you’re saying but you REALLY 100% write like an LLM
Edit: you are an LLM which is worse
I've interacted with k0e3 in the past, they're no LLM. Even then, a quick profile check shows it. But you didn't check it, right? Of course you didn't, it's easier to vomit assumptions and re-eat your own vomit, right?
And the comment's "tone" isn't even remotely close to typical LLM output dammit. LLMs avoid words like "bullshit", contracting "it is not" into "it's not" (instead of "it isn't"), or writing in first person. The only thing resembling LLM output is the em dash usage—but there are a thousand potential reasons for that.
(inb4 assumer claims I'm also an LLM because I just used an em dash and listed three items.)
He became famous for fixing computers, mostly Apple products, while complaining about how bad Apple Genius bars were, and how unfair Apple's business practices are. I can respect that, and it was good that someone was speaking up about it.
You'd expect someone like that to be pro-regulation, anti-monopoly, pro-union, etc. But, it does seem like his motivation is more libertarian, and that's what makes me worry.
Crazy thing is he also uploads to Odysee and paid to develop grayjay, I'm not even subscribed to his youtube channel and thanks to him I'm moving as many subs off the platform as possible. Quite a few creators upload all their shit to other platforms.
also if you're watching someone who advocates for adblockers without using one yourself that's on you.
He barely makes money off of these videos (negligible) and encourages all his users to use adblockers.
Given his target audience I'm sure he's at the lower end of the money paid per view. Also he could've taken a sponsorship on anyone of his hundreds of videos but he has not so far, so not really big $$$
Liking to hear himself rant is not a quality in my book..
I don't like the way he speaks but he's all (I should say mostly, I don't watch all of his videos) about consumer rights which ...
How can you not like that?
Sure his delivery method is not for everyone but listen through his salt-coated style and you'll find he brings up many important points.

On the other hand, seeing this symbol more and more on other random videos outside that bubble does give a very nice sense of "I am not alone". It does more for users to find eachother than it does damage to big corpos.
But choice of the symbol itself is questionable.. Why use a big tech symbol to protest big tech? -__-

It's mostly idiots who want to be part of something and some that "don't like" what is happening and "want" change but put in the least possible amount of effort pathetically to attempt to cause a change, and this only when someone popular suggests.
They never really want to stop using the product. It's like drug addicts trying to make drugs less addicting by "protesting" against the very thing they use (and will keep using) literally everyday.
Personally, I have more of a "I'm not alone" feeling when I actively leave services that I disagree with and through word of mouth find alternatives where I can talk to people who seem to have the same base values I do. Even if we disagree on other things.
It's the laziness of this initiative that drives me up a wall. People want change but they don't want to work for or sacrifice anything for it.
we can argue about the choice of symbol until the world ends. the symbol is just a thing people can recognise and rally around.
the first step of any movement is to gather people. then do something. so yes, changing a picture is lazy, but it is a virtual rally point. he talks about next steps in another video: odysee.com/@rossmanngroup:a/yo…
You Changed Your Profile to Clippy: Now What? 📎📎📎
https://fulu.org/newsletter/ & https://consumerrights.wikiOdysee
Good on him that he's actually planning on doing something more than just have ppl change their avatar. Maybe he should have put that in the original video instead of getting mad that people are calling him out for slacktivism.
Also, I have not argued the choice of symbol at any point. I don't care what image people put as their profile pic. What I was arguing was that it is weak to change your profile pic for a cause if you then keep using the products you're protesting against.
If he and the people joining his movement actually manage to make positive change, then I'm all for it. It just wasn't clear in his first video that he had ambitions to actively have laws changed. It sounded like he wanted people to change their pics that that would somehow make everybody rebel against their corporate overlords. If he didn't want people to think that was his movement, he should have elaborated in the same video instead of playing coy and splitting it up into two videos where he gets to call the critics of his movement apathetic idiots.
Good luck to him and those who join the movement. I hope they manage to make some changes.
sometimes you don't have to (or can't) have a full plan A-Z. Sometimes you just have to start somewhere - usually with gathering ppl. euromaidan is a great example of that.
but yes, louis could have put more concrete plans in his first video. as he has them. on the other hand he probably throws many things and sees what sticks. i guess that is what you have to do, if you try to change legislation against corpos with much more everything than you.
And that is fair. If he's the type to throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks before he goes into making more detailed plans, then cool. But him sitting and getting pissy about people who criticized him and calling them names is a very unselfaware move. Of he's a throw shit at the wall guy, he has to deal with the fact that people can't read his mind and that he will have to clarify like an adult and talk to his critics with respect. If he can't handle valid criticism to his poorly communicated video, he should probably change tactics and not be a throw shit at the wall guy anymore.
Again, I wish him the best of luck with his movement as he seems to have the drive to actually getting things done. I just don't respect his attitude about the criticism he received.

Clippy symbolizes the attachment our generation has to the old state of software:
- you bought it? Then it runs offline for sure!
- nothing runs on background, except if you turn it on (Yes I never turned on Windows default protection on Win xp or win 7
- You bought? You own it, you format it, you don't pay for subscription, and there is practically nothing stopping you from modifying it if you go hacker.
On top of that Clippy looks cute. Personally I'm not participating in the movement since I'm not American, but imo the choice does make sense.
While I'm typing from Ubuntu, I only switched to Linux cuz I can't get back to the old state of win xp or win 7 that was perfect imo. While some are trying to convert people into Linux, others are trying to restore the corporate business to the old acceptable state.
Neither will succeed alone, and in fact those companies are using resources of your country to produce this shit, so it makes sense that you demand it to not suck that hard.

The real question is of course whether or not anyone is gonna do something past changing their profile pictures.
I give this trend a couple of months. Maximum a year and then a bunch of people will have clippy avatars and everything will go back to normal.
Something like Stop Killing Games was an initiative that only survived because one man dedicated a good portion of his life to get the issue brought before the eyes of actual politicians. Even before the pirate software drama, Ross had been talking about this issue for years and many people agreed, but nobody did anything except for Ross. Maybe the petition would have reached its goal without piratesoftware's initial meddling. Maybe it wouldn't. His subsequent sperging turned failure into success, but the issue is still in process to be reviewed and maybe it will be a win, maybe the lobbyists will shut it down. We don't know yet. But without Ross' stubbornness, nothing would be done.
Imagine if Ross had told gamers to change their profile pic to pacman to show game companies and consumers that "we dont agree with the companies' practices? That would be a total joke.
Obviously google, facebook etc. are not going to fall to the ground with tears in their eyes with this.
It won't?
Well, that clinches it: I'm out.
Nobody expects this to do anything, it's about signaling to others that there are likeminded people who don't tolerate bullshit like "random corp bricks consumers devices" anymore.
Pff. This reminds me of the This Is Bob protest against the forced Google+ accounts that were the beginning of youtube enshittification. It didn't do shit. Anyone who wants a profile on youtube nowadays has a Google account. Google+ may have failed but the intent and mission behind it didn't. Google has total control over anyone who wants to use YouTube now.
You can set clippy as your profile pic and feel like you have done something, but it's not gonna change anything.
If people want to actually do something, they should abandon these predatory services and go open source or maybe become anti tech as much as possible. It doesn't matter whether or not you signal to the Zuckerburgers on top how you feel if you're just gonna continue to use their products.
The only thing that would scare them would be the numbers plummeting if they saw a mass exodus from their platforms and services and people actively began looking for alternatives. But most people can't be fucked to do that because they are too enmeshed with these services that it is easier to stay. But putting clippy as your profile pic is super easy and costs you nothing so yay. You get to feel like you did something without actually sacrificing anything to make change and the Zuckerburgers will look at you and shrug. "Ah, the peasants are blowing off some steam again".
Sorry for being so negative, but this is honestly so fucking weak. I may have missed something, but when has slacktivism ever changed the minds of these companies?

I do really think that one of the things we have to do as collective, is something somewhat impossible but,
We need to pick the things we really care about. Limit ourselves from the everything that we have been offered for so long and find what brings us joy specifically and start following and protecting that and doing it off the Internet, or at least the at large big players.
Find artists in our spaces locally that make the comedy, or comics, or stories, the developers that make their own games and movies that dont outsource their work to others so that it no longer feels like art.
We can still have globalised sharing and our spaces can support that by raising up the best of the best naturally through communication and sharing but not just by being told it's gonna be big or given to us easily.
The only way out feels like we as a collective need to start putting work into cultivating and tending to our fandoms and we cant be as greedy as it will take more work. Im fine with us being an insatiable species craving for more cause its how we don't stop, and i want new artists and new creators and new spaces. But i think we cant be lazy about it anymore. And i think doubly so we cant think we can do all of it.
Problem is that the majority of people are not going to do any of that because it takes work and people either don't want to let go of comforts, they don't care enough or they don't have the energy to be digital activists after they have finished a day of work.
It will probably only gain traction if it becomes the cool thing to do among young people and even then, it will most likely be a smaller number of young people who will bother doing all of this.
The rest will become really good at prompting their way through life because its easier, more comfortable and takes the least effort.
they don't have the energy to be digital activists after they have finished a day of work.
Good news! With the rate corporations are laying off and firing workers, pretty soon they will have plenty of time for activism.
/S
Yeah i mean that seems likely with how things are going but also things rarely go exactly to plan.
Im a realist so, i accept that it is entirely possible its gonna keep getting worse. I'm just also a sucker for optimism and maybe someday it will be better.
Probably not tomorrow or next year... Probably gonna be a lot more of this for a while.
Hold on to your optimism! We need people like you.
I consider myself a pessimistic optimist. Things probably aren't gonna happen the way we hoped, but we will adapt and make some lemonade with what we are given.
It's so rare that hyped movements go anywhere because the focus is always on the wrong things, but in the long term, if companies make it increasingly obnoxious to use their services, people will most likely silently make the move to open source through word of mouth. It isn't as sexy and bombastic as making clippy your avatar and doing armchair V for Vendetta protests, but it's through people's silent choices that change will gradually happen. Whether or not this change will be felt on a grand scale, I don't know. I also don't really care. I just believe that over time, more and more people will eventually turn their back on the big tech companies while the rest will stick around either out of indifference or ignorance and that is their right too.
Google+ may have failed but the intent and mission behind it didn't.
Google+ was Google's attempt to take on Facebook with its own social product. It definitely failed, and the intent and mission failed too. That isn't to say that they have no social data, but they definitely don't have access to the full social graph that Meta does.
It wasn't a complete failure. Before Google+ Google's various products were all siloed. Your data in gmail was in a different silo from you data from search, which was different from your data from Google Reader, etc. As part of the Google+ push, Google put out an EULA that basically said that it could share data from any google product you used with any other google product you used and it was one big unified account now. Thanks to that, they're able to target their ads based on much more data. But, they still wish they'd been able to get a Facebook competitor up and running so they could see more clearly who your friends and family were. There's so much interpersonal data they're missing out on.
The issue is what this even accomplishes.
Traction is indeed important. But people also get exhausted (how many folk were whinging about "first I needed to make my avatar a rainbow and now it needs to be black? Oh, you mean a black box. Whoopsie" back in 2020?). It is why "just do something, it doesn't matter what" is such a stupid fucking mentality because you waste the general good will towards pointless slacktivism and then people stop caring by the time you have an idea of how to utilize them.
Which... is where the Rossman comes in. I have a lot of issues with him as a human being but as an activist he is REALLY effective... for Right to Repair... for repair shops. But he has also made his career on convincing everyday people that he is fighting for them when he is really using them as ammunition for making sure his repair shop (that totally doesn't violate any labor laws...) can stay running because OBVIOUSLY this lobbyist movement to support activity that requires a full hotplate and high powered microscope is something that everyday consumers care about (sort of in the sense of having options, but at this scale the poison pill apple compliance is actually probably just as good, if not better, for consumers)
I haven't been able to even find a good explanation of what this is even supposed to accomplish. But, dime to a dollar, it is Rossman et al demonstrating how quickly he can mobilize The Internet as a negotiating tactic for whatever he and his lobbyist buddies are pushing on right now.
Im actually fine with "just do something" mentality.
Cause if every person did to the limit of what they are capable of things would still change.
For Rossman the limit of what he is capable of might be changing laws via his followers so he can keep his repair shop running. For others it might be legal efforts. For some it could be talking directly to their parents who are the wealthy overlords, and for some it might mean running themselves. And for some its just beinf oart of a chorus that shouts what they believe in.
It has worked for religion for so long.
We are a numbers species. We arent as clever as we think and individuals actually rarely get anything singularly done themselves. But we cant stop at whats easy but what is within our reach.
If everyone "did what they can" to make the world a better place, we just might have a shot at it.
We are a numbers species
And we only have power when we act in numbers towards a focused goal.
This is why we (should) have (more) Unions instead of just "Negotiate for yourself and everyone will benefit". And that, inherently, needs leaders who know how to work towards a shared purpose.
Everyone should work towards making the world a better place. But we also need to understand what we are actually working towards and what those "somethings" actually can accomplish.
Yeah. Agreed but chicken or the egg right?
It's easy to say we just need the unions and groups but we need to build them by people just starting.
We definitely need to pick people to lead us better and not lazily accept people saying they are the right person to lead simply because they are.
It helps when we have a shared idea of what better is.
youtube pfp to clippy ?
That would require having a YouTube/Google account, so no
Okay two things.
I didn't set my pfp to clippy mainly because I'm lazy and don't really comment on Youtube.
People complaining people are only doing this to follow a trend are completely right. BUT! some of those trend chasers might actually stop and think about the message, and might realized we're all being scammed by modern tech/software companies.
I ain't expecting some mass protest or anything, but it's at the very least a small handful more people giving a shit about their relationship with technology. As apposed to most who just throw their information and money at any sign-up page that asks.
I ain’t expecting some mass protest or anything
It's hard to tell really, when even PewDiePie is making videos about DeGoogling and switching to foss and Linux. You know how influential he is among gen z (or gen Alpha, I'm not really sure).
PM->DM was a mix of making it more obvious that those were NOT private in the slightest and to better align with marketing ("send a Direct Message to the celebrity you are stalking!")
I am not sure when "pfp" took over but I've noticed over the past 3 or 4 months a LOT of random requests for a DM on discord of people asking where I got my pfp... which is literally a screenshot from a cartoon in the 00s. So I assume this is related to selling avatars to people on the game social networks?

Facebook reveals news feed experiment to control emotions
Protests over secret study involving 689,000 users in which friends' postings were moved to influence moodsRobert Booth (The Guardian)
This was surfaced in Sarah Wynn-Williams’ book.
The social media company likewise tracked when adolescent girls deleted selfies, "so it can serve a beauty ad to them at that moment," according to Wynn-Williams. Other examples of Facebook's ad lechery are said to include the targeting of young mothers based on their emotional state, as well as emotional indexes mapped to racial groups, like a "Hispanic and African American Feeling Fantastic Over-index."

No, simply because I've never commented on youtube, so it'd be pretty useless, if not counterproductive. Giving even more information about my political/tech ethics to Alphabet doesn't seem smart nor useful in my position. Also, I don't even watch youtube videos on their website now. I usually use invidious instances or newpipe.
But I'm not against people doing it, especially if the ultimate goal is spreading awareness and building a community of people with privacy oriented ideas.
Are you able to watch every video normally with invidious and newpipe on Desktop (Linux/Windows) ?
In my experience, yes. For desktop usage you can use invidious from browser and freetube [https://freetubeapp.io/] as external client/software (but I've never used Freetube so I can't comment on that). Newpipe is android only and I HIGHLY recommend it if you have Android.
The problem with invidious instances is that sometimes they get pretty laggy because of server overloads (I guess? honestly idk). You also don't have your account tailored recommendation, but in my experience you can jump around a lot, especially if your main interest are programming videos.
Another method I use is downloading the videos I'm interested into using JDownloader 2, but that's pretty extreme and I relied on this to combat my "algorithm addiction". Got fed up by it months ago, so I put my favourite channels on a RSS feeds and downloaded only the videos I was truly interested into. Usually downloading videos require way less bandwidth than streaming.

Nothing stands out very far regarding the negatives. I could speculate to a few things, though. He's not a Socialist. When the going got tough for him and his business he uprooted and moved out of NYC to Texas. I can't really think of anything else objectionable. I actually like him, though so I may be biased.
For the positives, he's helped drive a lot of the Right to Repair legislation in this country as he's reported a lot of discussions he's had with real legislators. He runs a website for mac product repair as a reference that also operates as a non-profit. He runs a daytime business repairing mac products that employs several other people. Generally he posts a lot to keep people up to date increasingly as an electronics-oriented influencer, but he used to post mac repair videos almost exclusively and he talked about having to navigate Apple's influence on regulating the second-hand market. He has also given platform to a number of other mac & electronic repair people.
To me he seems to talk-the-talk and walk-the-walk when it comes to Right to Repair, but like I said, I might be biased.
- he believes to be the morals authority
- the standards he is advocating for don't apply to him (for example fighting for open source just to release an app which isn't open source)
Why not simply go for a Reddit blackout
Well the whole reddit thing was just a bunch of volunteer mods. On the other hand, many YouTubers make a career out of the platform. Considering their livelihoods are at stake, and the vast number of YouTubers you would need to get on board to make google actually care? Organizing such a thing would be anything but simple.

Also the Reddit blackout did nothing. So I'm not why that's your reference point. Charging pfp would achieve exactly the same. Nothing.
Americans love their nothing burger demonstrations.
I think the Reddit blackout did a lot, just not everything. I'm here on Lemmy because of it. Granted I'm still on Reddit as well, and Mastodon, and Xitter...
Just keep plugging along, and every little bit helps.
This is simply the first step for organising as a group around a shared idea: using a common symbol.
It doesn't matter what the symbol is, as long as we recognize each other using it.

There's a lesson I learnt from playing team games: If your teammate makes a bad call that you disagree with, you should still follow them 100%. Going all-in on a questionable decision is almost always better than second guessing each other.
I think it applies here, and it's why right wingers and religions are so effective. They don't care if their arguments are flawed or their leader is a rapist, they're jumping into that fight every time.
Not an online gamer, but I heard a similar sentiment from a boss about 20 years ago. He told me "if you make a mistake one time, I got your back, but we'll speak in private and I'll counsel you. Make the mistake again, I'll let my pen do the talking. Make it a third time, you're off the team."
It escalates quickly, but his management style helped us learn from the mistakes. Sometimes the second time happened. But everyone was willing to go to war with this guy. I mean, proverbially. This was also a guy who would bring his grill to work and cook for everyone one weekend a month. Companies that say you're family, big red flag. A boss who walks the walk as well as talks the talk? Huge green flag.

C-o-s-a??? 😳t.me/c/1230970294/59634
Is Sanrio’s Kuromi Fighting for Ukraine? Badge on Wall Behind Zelenskyy Stands Out: .

Russia’s war against Ukraine

Sloviansk is the city where the war began in 2014, marked by its occupation by Russian militias led by Igor Strelkov, also known as Girkin. The town is located in Donetsk Oblast, a Ukrainian region cited in peace-talk discussions involving U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin over a potential front-line freeze and territorial exchanges. Zelensky urges ‘strong response‘ from US if Putin rejects talks with Ukraine.
“We are ready for the bilateral meeting. If the Russians are not, then we would like to see a strong response from the United States,” Zelensky said, adding that he asked Trump to impose additional sanctions on Moscow if it rejects talks with Ukraine.

Arr, ye be wantin’ the secrets o’ the Servarr fleet, eh? Then lend me yer ears:
Sonarr – This be the lookout in the crow’s nest, keepin’ watch fer new episodes o’ yer favorite shows. When it spies ‘em, it signals the crew to fetch ‘em down from the digital seas.
Radarr – Aye, this one’s the treasure hunter, scourin’ the oceans fer full-length films instead o’ episodes. It marks the map, finds the booty, an’ brings the shiny reels aboard.
Lidarr – The ship’s bard, huntin’ down new shanties an’ albums to keep the crew’s spirits high on long voyages.
Readarr – A learned scribe, fetchin’ tomes an’ scrolls fer them what likes a quiet night with words instead o’ waves.
Bazarr – The translator, givin’ ye subtitles fer shows an’ films in whatever tongue ye fancy, so no sailor be left in the dark.
Prowlarr – The scout, integratin’ all yer trackers an’ indexers into one mighty spyglass, so the rest o’ the crew can search the seas more smartly.
All together, they be runnin’ like a well-oiled pirate crew, each wit’ a role in findin’, organizin’, and keepin’ yer plundered media shipshape.

it helped me be able to conceptually put the pieces together a little better. it still took actually setting them up and using them for a bit to really understand certain aspects of them, or see 'why' certain things are how they are when I'd previously had no clue for some settings.
They're just media library organizers that can download media for you using torrents or Usenet. There's a different one for each type of media:
- Radar - Movies
- Sonarr - TV
- Lidarr - Music
- Readarr - eBooks
- Whisparr - Porn
There's also prowlarr, which you can use to set up a list of indexers (torrent/Usenet sites) that the other *arr servers can use, so you don't have to configure each server's indexer list individually. You can also use it as an aggregated indexer search for other things that arent managed by the rest of the suite (like software).
There's also bazarr which you can use to automatically download subtitles for your TV/movie library.
And there's flaresolvarr which can be used by prowlarr to bypass captchas for indexers that use them.
It's all pretty easy to set up, especially if you're using docker containers, although there is a community install script that'll do everything for you if you want them installed directly on Linux.
You do need a separate download client set up, like qbittorrent for torrents and sabnzbd for Usenet.
A collection of programs that will track your media directory and automatically start a torrent on a missing piece of media with a web interface that you can use to browse what you do and do not have.
- lidarr -- music manager
- radarr -- movie manager
- sonarr -- tv shows manager
- prowlarr -- torrent index manager (ie tell sonarr to check thepiratebay.
So you basically start these programs, connect them with prowlarr so that they can find torrents, point them to a media directory, and then connect that back to a torrent client such as Qbittorrent. When a new TV show comes out, they will automatically download that into your downloads directory and hardlink it to your media directory, torrent keeps seeding, it's filed away properly and no extra storage use until the hardlink breaks. So if you also have Jellyfin / navidrome pointing at your media directory, you will just see new media pop up each week.
I recommend using qbitorrent in a docker container that enforces a vpn, then you can just drop a WireGuard profile in there. AirVPN Works well for this as it supports port forwarding as well.
I personally manage the entire thing in a single docker compose file, and that's what I would recommend, because then it's set and forget.
So there's the "official" set of tools from servarr.com, but there's a few "unofficial" tools as well, but they all function similarly in that they glue several things together to make workflows nicer.
- A downloader (either a Bittorrent client or Usenet, but I will focus on Bittorrent).
- An Indexer, some remote site (like thepiratebay.org) or BitMagnet (local DHT scraper) for searching for torrents. Prowlarr is the generic indexer component, so it can provide Indexer's to other components (Sonarr, Radarr, etc.), but you don't need to use Prowlarr if the site
- A downloads folder.
- A media library folder.
After adding your media library so the component knows what you "have" already, you tell the component (say "Sonarr" for TV shows) what you "want" and it's added to a wanted list. It also knows what you already have. When you add a new show to your wanted list it can immediately download it, or it can wait for new episodes to be released and only download those. When downloading it will download to the downloads folder and then copy (you can change settings so it uses hard links, so these copies don't take up extra space). It will only copy the media files and ignore .nfo/readme.txt style files, and it will change the format to the one Plex/JellyFin want (with //S__E__ - Episode title.mkv) By default it will seed for a certain amount and then delete the files from the downloads folder/remove from the torrent client, but this is configurable. It can also look for higher quality versions like if you have 480p versions of a show and 1080p versions become available it can download them and replace the lower quality versions with higher quality (it does not do this by default).
But that's fundamentally how they work, they have a media library with certain things, and a list of things you "want" and then a way to download things to get from the want list into the media library without needing to do any manual intervention (except manually adding things to your wanted list)
You could say this about a lot of automation tools. A properly-functioning *arr stack is nothing more than an automation tool. Punch a movie/tv show into Overseerr, the *arrs work in the background with your downloader client (torrent or Usenet), and some time later - depending on your internet bandwidth - it appears in Plex/Jellyfin.
The convenience of the end result is worth the work.
No its just not that convenient for the LOE. You know what just requires punching in the title you want? Most private tracker uis. Click download and the client picks up the torrent file from your downloads folder
Fuck retrovibed has an rss feed reader and you can just click bookmark in a trackers ui and it'll download in the background.
I took one look at the arr stack and noped right the fuck out.
Maybe not useful to you, and that's ok.
That said - just because you don't find them useful, doesn't mean you have to be a stick in the mud about it.
I setup a tdarr server/node today, it automatically sets up videos to be transcoded. I'm using it so my mini pc hosting jellyfin doesn't have to. This means the videos should direct play, saving significant resources on the mini pc. That should allow me a handful of streams at the same time if it happens.
I put the node on my main desktop pc with a GPU, so when my server sees new videos land in my jellyfin folder it should have the windows pc grab the video, transcode it over on it's own ssd, then replace the original video on the server.
meant to automate grabbing content from torrents or usenet, sending them to your torrent client, and also moving or linking the dowbloaded files
the available settings, filter for formats, etc. are pretty complex and the usecase is broad
Typical piracy requires you to search sources/indexers yourself, decide on the best search result for what you're trying to download, pass that to your download client, then manually name and sort the downloaded files into media folders once the download completes.
The arr's automate this entre process for several media types (movies, tv, music, etc), combining search results from dozens of indexers to make its decision on what to download.
Now, I open a webpage, search for a movie/show (results from imdb) and select an item I want to watch. ~15min later, that item has been found, downloaded, and sorted into my media folders where Emby/Jellyfin can display it to myself or friends.
Add on to this with Ombi, a requests platform that allows my friends+family to request media and have the arrs automatically grab it. Since setting that up a little over a year ago, it's filled almost 400 requests (not including media I've grabbed/requested myself) without me having to manually manage requests ever.
Ontop of grabbing media on request, the arr's also monitor the sources you've configured, watching for new uploads, and grabbing content that's missing from your library but monitored for, such as: newly aired episodes, media that couldn't be found earlier, or upgrades in quality for existing media (if configured/allowed to upgrade existing media).
Every time a new episode airs for a show I've added, it automatically grabs it for me. (currently 486 series monitored here)
Inside the Underground Trade of ‘Flipper Zero’ Tech to Break into Cars
Inside the Underground Trade of ‘Flipper Zero’ Tech to Break into Cars
A man holds an orange and white device in his hand, about the size of his palm, with an antenna sticking out. He enters some commands with the built-in buttons, then walks over to a nearby car. At first, its doors are locked, and the man tugs on one of them unsuccessfully. He then pushes a button on the gadget in his hand, and the door now unlocks. The tech used here is the popular Flipper Zero, an ethical hacker’s swiss army knife, capable of all sorts of things such as WiFi attacks or emulating NFC tags. Now, 404 Media has found an underground trade where much shadier hackers sell extra software and patches for the Flipper Zero to unlock all manner of cars, including models popular in the U.S. The hackers say the tool can be used against Ford, Audi, Volkswagen, Subaru, Hyundai, Kia, and several other brands, including sometimes dozens of specific vehicle models, with no easy fix from car manufacturers.
💡
Do you know anything else about people using the Flipper Zero to break into cars? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at joseph.404 or send me an email at joseph@404media.co.These tools are primarily sold for a fee, keeping their distribution somewhat limited to those willing to pay. But, there is the looming threat that this software may soon reach a wider audience of thieves. Straight Arrow News (SAN) previously covered the same tech in July, and the outlet said it successfully tested the tool on a vehicle. Now people are cracking the software, meaning it can be used for free. Discord servers with hundreds of members are seeing more people join, with current members trolling the newbies with fake patches and download links. If the tech gets out, it threatens to supercharge car thefts across the country, especially those part of the social media phenomenon known as Kia Boys in which young men, often in Milwaukee, steal and joyride Kia and Hyundai cars specifically because of the vehicles’ notoriously poor security. Apply that brazeness to all of the other car models the Flipper Zero patches can target, and members of the car hacking community expect thieves to start using the easy to source gadget.

Certain Android VPN apps are insecure, secretly tied to one Chinese company
Techspot has a table of some known bad VPNs, and concludes:
The report does not speculate heavily on Qihoo 360's motives for concealing ownership of so many free VPN apps, an approach that likely helped boost downloads while avoiding reputational risks. The company, which has well-documented ties to Beijing's communist regime, may have pursued this strategy to minimize costs and maintain deniability.

Oh neat! Didn’t know this was a thing. Not something I need, but glad to know it exists.
I’d be surprised if it was anything other than the cheap mechanisms everything else gets. There’s very few companies manufacturing them and Techmoan is always on top of modern cassette systems and hasn’t brought it up. I could always be wrong, though.
They do indeed specify some sort of high voltage precision motor and a copper flywheel. And they claim a custom movement design.
And since it is an enthusiast device from a company with a good reputation, you can easily find teardowns online.
Anyway, you can read reviews online, there are plenty of them, and make your own mind.
Hmm, I’ve never seen someone directly link conservatism to the entire concept of society.
I didn’t know considering societal conditions was conservative. But I guess conservative leaders in the US did implement a lot of environmental protections. 🤔
Where does the line actually fall, do you think? I assume I’m over extending a bit here. Making assumptions about what you mean.
Ok, see that makes a lot more sense than whatever the other guy who replied to me is going on about and accusing me of.
Thanks for the reply.
Can you write up the logic chain that made you assume I think any particular law is good for society, let alone the one you focused on?
All I was commenting on was the idea that conservatives are the ones crying “we live in a society” and not progressives. I’ve always considered progressive ideas to be more in touch with “we live in a society!” Than conservatives who want to punish and suppress marginalized groups who are, in fact, part of society.
What the hell man?
“Fuck you I got mine” is not considering others and ignores that we live in a society. And that’s what these conservative leaders are all about.
Corporations having no responsibility for the environment and the communities they are part of is a conservative ideal. It does not support society.
I noted the environmental laws because they were exceptions, and look a bit surprising in retrospect. When one learns Nixon passed major environmental laws, they are often surprised.
Oh wait, are you here to say those environmental laws, things like the clean air act are just tools of control over the common man. Clean air and water is oppression?
Progressives say, "We live in a society, so let's not harm each other." Conservatives say, "Do what I want, not what you want, or society will crumble." Take a look at all the morality laws, and try to find even two where the ultimate result isn't punishment for daring to live in a manner they don't agree with. And the overwhelming majority of those morality laws are passed by conservatives. Even libertarians complain if someone has the audacity to tax them for the roads they use, especially the ones they use indirectly.
Even when the laws are for good reasons, control is applied. Do you not see how unnecessary regulatory burden can be used as a tool for gatekeeping? As for environmental laws, it's a bit audacious to talk about Nixon given what Trump has done in the last couple months. Who in their right mind (who isn't profiting from the sale of coal) wants to keep coal plants that operate at a loss around, whether you believe in climate change or not?
Living in a city, I can kind of get it. The number of people who simply walk in front of my bike because they're absorbed in their phone has made my commute stressful. I ended up installing a car horn on my bike which I'm sure makes their commute more stressful.
Perhaps the Walkman was the first time technology isolated people from the world around them.
Or I dunno, books.
"Will personal headphones lead to a world of silence?" We could have wished.
Also, the OG Walkman still looks brilliant. I wish they'd bring the headphone design back.
The Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame: Sony Walkman
The idea for the Walkman came from Sony’s opera-loving cofounderBrian Santo (IEEE Spectrum)
Honestly there were some food points back then. A lot of people simply are not able to wear headphones responsibly. It's only gotten worse with noise cancelling technology. The ability to ignore the outside world is great when you're in a safe space to do so, but people doing it out in public or while driving are absolutely mad.
The quotes about "breaking societal connections" or whatever are funny to me though. Because that was happening at the time, but it had far more to do with the erosion of 3rd places and the rise of car-centric infrastructure than it did headphones.
