Google AI Falsely Says YouTuber Visited Israel, Forcing Him to Deal With Backlash
Science and music YouTuber Benn Jordan had a rough few days earlier this week after Google’s AI Summary falsely said he recently visited Israel and caused people to believe he supported the country during its war on Gaza. Jordan does not support Israel and has previously donated to Palestinian charities.Jordan told 404 Media that when people type his name into Google it’s often followed by “eyebrows” or “wife.” That changed when popular political Twitch streamer Hasan Piker decided to react to his video about Flock AI, an AI powered camera company that 404 Media has covered extensively. Jordan’s videos have appeared on Piker’s stream before, so he knew he was in for a bit of a ride. “Anytime that he has reacted to my content I’m always like ‘Oh no, I’m going to get eviscerated in front of millions of people for being a libertarian without being able to explain my views,” he said.

This time it was a little different, however. “I looked at it and in the middle of it, his chat was kind of going crazy, saying that I support Israel’s genocidal behavior,” Jordan said. “And then I started getting a bunch of messages from people asking me why I don’t make myself clear about Israel, or why I support Israel and I’ve donated plenty of money to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund. I’ve been pretty vocal in the past about not supporting Israel and supporting a free Palestinian state.”Then someone sent him a screenshot of the AI generated summary of a Google search result that explained the deluge of messages. If you typed “Benn Jordan Israel” into Google and looked only at its AI summary, this is what it told you:
“Electronic musician and science YouTuber Benn Jordan has recently become involved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, leading to significant controversy and discussion online. He has shared his experiences from a trip to Israel, during which he interviewed people from kibbutzim near the Gaza border,” the AI summary said, according to a screenshot Jordan shared on Bluesky. “On August 18, 2025, Benn Jordan uploaded a YouTube video titled I Was Wrong About Israel: What I Learned On the Ground, which detailed his recent trip to Israel.”
Jordan had never been to Israel and he doesn't make content about war. His videos live at the cross section of science and sound and he went viral earlier this year when he converted a PNG sketch into an audio waveform and taught the song to a young starling, effectively saving a digital image in the memory of a bird. He’s also covered the death of Spotify, crumbling American capitalism, and the unique dangers AI poses to musicians.
It seemed that Google’s AI had confused Jordan with the YouTuber Ryan McBeth, a guy who does make videos about war. McBeth is a chainsmoking NEWSMAX commentator who has a video titled “I Was Wrong About Israel: What I Learned on the Ground,” the exact same title Google thought Jordan was responsible for.
It’s a weird mistake for AI to make, but AI makes a lot of mistakes. AI generated songs are worse than real ones, AI generated search results funnel traffic away from the sites where Google gets the information it is summarizing and are often wrong. Jordan’s experience is just one small sample of what happens when people take AI at face value without doing five minutes of extra research.
When Jordan learned he was being misrepresented by the AI summary, he started sharing the story on Bluesky and Threads. He told 404 Media that the AI summary updated itself about 24 hours later. “Eventually the AI picked up me posting about it and then said that there was a rumor about me, a false rumor, spread about me going to Israel. And then I was just kind of ripping the hair out of my head. I was like, ‘you don’t even know that you created the rumor!’”
He told 404 Media that he thought it might be possible that Google’s AI had defamed him and he reached out to lawyers for an opinion, not as a prelude to a lawsuit but more out of curiosity. One told him he may have a case. “I’m going to Yellowstone next week for 10 days. I’m going to be completely off the grid,” Jordan said. “Had this happened, and had this continued to spread around and become a giant controversy, I would probably lose YouTube subscribers, I would lose Patreon members.”
Jordan has covered AI in the past and said he wasn’t shocked by the system breaking down. “Everybody’s rushing LLMs to be part of our daily lives [...] But the actual LLM itself is not good. It’s just not what they claim it is. It may never be what they claim it is due to the limitations of how LLMs work and AI works, and despite the promises that are made. It’s just a really bad algorithm for gaining any sort of useful information that you can trust and it’s prioritizing that above journalists to keep the money.”
In the aftermath of the whole thing, Jordan clarified his position on the Israel-Palestine conflict. In a thread on Bluesky he said he does think that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza and why. “Hopefully, somebody sees that before they waste their time to message me to lecture me about genocide,” he said. “Although, now I’m being lectured about genocide from the other side. Now I have skin in it. Now I’m dealing with messages from people defending Israel, telling me that I’m antisemetic.”
This isn’t the first time Google’s AI summary has screwed up the basic facts about someone with a public profile. In July, humorist Dave Barry discovered that Google’s AI summary thought he had died last year after a battle with cancer. Barry is very much alive and detailed his fight to correct the record of his demise in his newsletter. Like Jordan, Google’s AI overview shifted. Unlike Jordan, it changed after Barry fought with Google’s various automated complaint systems.
When an AI makes mistakes like this we tend to call it a hallucination. Jordan used the word when he posted the updated summary of his life. “I’ve thought about it the last few days, and that’s giving it so much credit, that it could hallucinate something” Jordan said. “Generally, it’s not great at scraping data and retrieving it in a way that’s reputable.”
“The vast majority of AI Overviews are factual and we’ve continued to make improvements to both the helpfulness and quality of responses," a Google spokesperson told 404 Media. "When issues arise—like if our features misinterpret web content or miss some context—we use those examples to improve our systems, and we take action as appropriate under our policies.”

There’s a lot to comment upon. I agree with,
”…any specific content created by ChatGPT, needs to be considered part of the package being sold by AI companies”
but the associated social phenomena go beyond markets and what is for sale and the consumer. Under the rapage by capitalism it has always been “buyer beware” and children grow up completely lacking the skills to be wary buyers, not that they’re to blame, it is a gross inefficiency to have a system that in order to function fairly and with justice requires people to spend exorbitant amounts of their learning years overcoming systemic ideological prejudices and false paradigms and the need to be wary of every product they purchase.
When I worked in the area of ISO-17025 Standards I was “not even a socialist” back then, but have intimations I would become more worldy wise, just seeing the tiny amount of effort (relatively speaking) put into ISO standards and Metrology, and the enormous invisible gain, right down to kitchen clock sync and rulers that work most of the time to the nearest fraction of a millimeter, and so much more before even getting to why airplanes do not routinely crash (even if absent flight control towers I am saying). But international standards go beyond just technology, and there’s no formal arrangement for protecting people who get isolated and introverted and feedback on their own bitterness. The cause of that is not any LLM, it is government austerity programs and all that rot.
We should not, and do not, need to live at a million miles an hour to have very good lives.
Let me be more blunt: No one ever needs an LLM. Yes, if used wisely they are labour saving, but yet still no one needs them. No one will ever need them. Like no one really ever needs a Lamborghini or a sable fur coat. The sacrifices made by our sheep each late spring should suffice, as should high quality pleasant public transport infrastructure. Acá dejé una forma de seguir una cuenta en Instagram sin tener que registrarte ahí.
Lo molesto cuando seguís una cuenta desde afuera de esa plataforma es que cuando escriben:
Link en la bioNo tenés forma de acceder a la famosa bio!
Tampoco podía entender por qué no poner el enlace, aunque no estuviera activo tuvieras que copiar esa dirección, abrir una ventana nueva en tu navegador y colocar esa dirección!
Me encuentro que esa horrible práctica (Link en la Bio) es recomendada por quienes saben sobre las redes!

El tema es que si no tenés una cuenta en Instagram no podés acceder a la bio de la persona y no encontrás ese link.

OK, sind aber nun auch keine unlösbaren Rätsel.
Letztlich gleichen sich die Symbole und Funktionen ja quer durch alle Netzwerke.
Nach zwei drei mal irren, hat man das dann doch drin, oder?
Da wir jetzt ja nicht wissen, was konkret ihr Schwierigkeiten bereitet hat können wir darüber an dieser Stelle nur spekulieren. Ich weiß allerdings aus meinen Anfängen hier noch zu gut, wie ich versehentlich eine eigentliche privat-nachricht über das Globus Symbol auf Reisen geschickt habe. Das war wirklich ein extrem unangenehmes Gefühl! Und um Gefühle scheint es hier jetzt ja auch zu gehen: Frust

So ein kleines Warnungs-pop-up wäre da schon sehr hilfreich. Zumal in der Browser-Variante die Icons eben nicht separat beschrieben werden, da musst du das von alleine zuordnen.

Ja. Super! Nur leider ist das eben bei den unterschiedlichen Instanzen hier und Formen, sich hier einzuloggen so überhaupt nicht einheitlich gestaltet– und das kann halt eben schon den ein oder anderen Extrem überfordern. Mir hat letztens auch erst wieder jemand gesagt, dass er sich aufgrund meiner Empfehlung das fedi angeschaut hätte und bereits beim Anlegen eines Accounts überfordert war.
dann frage ich mich aber auch, wie solche Personen Verträge und Versicherungen abschließen?
Würfeln die das aus?
Klar ist das fediverse anders und das auch aus genau vielen Gründen.
Wenn man "scheitert", dann meist aus dem Grund, weil man sich nicht informiert hat und nur denkt, das es "genau wie alle anderen ist".
Innerhalb einer Softwarefamilie (Mastodon, Sharkey, Akkoma usw.) sind die Button alle gleich. Einzig wenn man sich dafür eine App installiert, machen genau deren EntwicklerInnen da noch was anders.
Das ist aber nicht der Fediverse Software anzukreiden sondern mehr den App EntwicklerInnen
Du, auch hier möchte ich einfach ganz gerne zu etwas mehr Verständnis für Laien aufrufen: auch ich hatte keine große Idee, als ich hier zu Mastodon gekommen bin. Bis heute bin ich keine IT-expertin und habe von vielen Dingen keinen Plan.
Leute,die mit diesen ganzen Datenkraken groß geworden sind dürften da garantiert erst einmal überfordert sein. Das hat nichts mit fehlender allgemeinen Intelligenz zu tun!

ich habe nichts von fehlender Intelligenz gesagt und das unterstelle ich auch keinem.
Nur so zu Einordnung, ich habe hier lange Jahre als Fediverse Mentor mit ganz vielen anderen, für alle Neulinge mit Rat und Tat zur Seite gestanden. Im abgespeckten Rahmen mache ich das heute noch bei der #FediverseSprechstunde von @Doris@top-netz.de
Viele kommen leider hier her und denken, das das fediverse eine 1:1 Kopie ist von irgend was und sind dann enttäuscht, wenn sie feststellen, das das doch nicht der fall ist.
Dazu kommt noch der fehlenden Lernwillen. Es soll alles sofort funktionieren udn zwar genau so, wie sie sich das vorstellen.
Das tut das Fediverse aber nicht und da rollt schon mal die erste Frustwelle über die user.
Leider hat sich auch das Verhalten sehr geändert. Wo viele Neulinge früher Fragen gestellt haben, ist das heute leider nur noch eine Minderheit.
Dafür wird aber rumgemeckert und wenn jemand dann mit Tipps um die Ecke kommt, wird dieser Verbal angegangen wegen was auch immer.
Es gibt sicher viele Gründe mit dem Fediverse nicht klarzukommen. Die meisten sind aber immer noch vorm Keyboard
Und das Menschen für eine Freizeitbeschäftigung gerne auch mal einfach etwas ohne übermäßig viel verstehen benutzen wollen finde ich nachvollziehbar. Da sollten die Hürden tief liegen. Und wer mag darf tief einsteigen.

nein, ich verstehe nicht alles. Und das was ich nicht verstehe, lasse ich mir von berufenene 3. Erklären.
Letztlich ist das Fediverse und da auch Mastodon, Selbsterklärend und die UNÜBERWINDLICHE HÜRDE, sich eine Instanz auszusuchen, hat deren Chef vor ein paar Jahren schon beseitigt, als er alle Neuanmeldungen auf seine Instanz umleitet.
Wenn man wirklich eine andere will, muss man das jetzt bewusst raussuchen. An sonsten is tder Anmeldeprozess leichter, asl wenn du dich heite bei Twitter anmelden willst.

Dieses Bild von separaten, aber koexistierenden Inseln ist kein Nachteil, sondern ein Ausdruck der sozialen Vielfalt innerhalb des Netzwerks.
Das Archipel unserer Gesellschaft
Die soziale Fragmentierung des Fediverse zeigt, dass digitale Räume weit mehr sind als technische Konstruktionen. Sie sind Spiegelbilder unserer gesellschaftlichen Vielfalt, Orte, an denen unterschiedliche Lebensweisen, Interessen und Kommunikationsstile aufeinanderprallen und koexistieren. Jede Insel bietet Raum für eigene Themen, eigene Ausdrucksformen und eigene Regeln. Für die Bewohner jeder Insel ist dies eine Form der Freiheit, die es erlaubt, sich zu entfalten, sich einzubringen und Inhalte nach eigenem Ermessen zu gestalten.Wer zwischen den Inseln reist, erkennt die Unterschiede in den Kommunikationsformen, die eigenen Rituale jeder Gruppe und die speziellen Dynamiken, die den Austausch prägen. Auf manchen Inseln herrscht Ruhe, auf anderen Energie und Bewegung, auf wieder anderen ein kreativer Fluss. Das Erleben dieser Vielfalt zeigt, dass digitale Räume genauso nuanciert sein können wie die physische Welt, und dass sie – wenn man aufmerksam hinschaut – tiefgehende Einblicke in die Art geben, wie Menschen Gemeinschaft gestalten.
Die Trennung in Inseln ermöglicht es zudem, dass unterschiedliche Bedürfnisse parallel erfüllt werden können. Informationssuchende finden Orte der Ruhe, Diskutierende Orte der Debatte, Kreative Orte der Inspiration, Organisatoren Orte der Struktur und Experimentierfreudige Orte der Innovation. Das Archipel sorgt dafür, dass jede Art der Interaktion ihren Raum hat, ohne dass eine Gruppe die andere dominiert oder die gesamte Gemeinschaft homogenisiert wird.
Das Fediverse verbindet, ohne zu vereinheitlichen, fördert Austausch, ohne Zwang aufzubauen, und erlaubt jedem, seinen Platz zu finden. Es zeigt eindrucksvoll, dass digitale Räume die soziale Vielfalt unserer Gesellschaft abbilden können. Wer sich auf diese digitale Welt einlässt, bekommt einen einzigartigen Einblick in die bunte Vielfalt menschlicher Interaktion – ein lebendiges, offenes Archipel, das sowohl Begegnung als auch Rückzug erlaubt, und das die unterschiedlichen Facetten menschlicher Gemeinschaft spiegelt.
Ein Vergleich zu monolithischen Plattformen
Im Gegensatz zu großen, einheitlich gestalteten sozialen Netzwerken, die meist eine einzige, dominante Kultur prägen, lebt das Fediverse von seiner Vielfalt und Dezentralität. Auf den bekannten Monopol-Plattformen bewegen sich alle Nutzerinnen und Nutzer auf demselben Boden, mit denselben Regeln, denselben Dynamiken und oft einem stark normierten Umgang miteinander. Unterschiede in Interessen oder Kommunikationsweisen werden hier häufig nivelliert, und kleine Gruppen, die andere Formen der Interaktion bevorzugen, geraten leicht in den Hintergrund oder verschwinden in der Masse.Das Fediverse dagegen erlaubt es, dass unterschiedliche Inseln ihre eigenen Wege gehen. Jede Plattform bildet eine Art Mikrokosmos, in dem bestimmte Nutzungsweisen, Rituale und Themen im Vordergrund stehen. Menschen, die Ruhe und Konzentration suchen, finden sie auf ihren Inseln, ebenso wie diejenigen, die intensive Debatten oder kreative Zusammenarbeit schätzen. Die Vielfalt der Inseln verhindert, dass eine einzelne Dynamik alle anderen dominiert, und schafft damit einen Raum, in dem verschiedene Lebensstile und Kommunikationsformen gleichwertig nebeneinander bestehen können. Das Archipel-Prinzip macht sichtbar, dass digitale Räume nicht zwangsläufig homogen oder vereinheitlichend sein müssen, sondern dass sie vielmehr die komplexe, fragmentierte Natur menschlicher Gemeinschaft widerspiegeln können.
