It reminds me a bit of how in 2020-2021 #COVID19 #Russia was pumping anti-vaxx propaganda through their language RT editions in foreign languages while RT in Russian was doing something entirely opposite - promoting “Sputnik” vaccine. Russians were paranoid enough to know, when RT in Russian says one thing, they need to verify it at other sources, and they verified at all the Western anti-vaxx blogs that flourished for RT money.. and translated the anti-vaxx bullshit back into Russian, driving down their own vaccination rates 🤦

While I generally enjoy using my various Apple devices, there are some major pain points and endless minor papercuts that I run into every day. Some of these would be understandable, even acceptable, in the v1 of a given service/app but instead of being fixed, they linger for years, untouched by the glacial yearly OS update1 .
For a while I considered collecting them up to write a detailed blog post on them but instead I’m going to just publish them as I run into them.
Today’s grievance is a small annoyance in Find My (Apple app/service for tracking people/things). I share my location with a number of friends/family and my #1 use-case is “How far out is person X?” so that I can plan around that. Should I put the dogs up? Should I set the table? Do I have time to finish something before they arrive?
As with many Apple papercuts, it’s something that sort of/mostly works. It works just well enough to show you how good it could be, before immediately disappointing you.
When I tap on a person in Find My it loads a card with more information including how many miles away they are and the estimated drive time. Perfect! It’s exactly what I want, blog post over, all is well!
Except… They show the drive time for approximately 5 seconds or less then it disappears for no discernible reason.

I’d file a Feedback, but I worry they would “fix” it by removing the time estimate entirely. Then again, submitting a Feedback is about as effective as shouting into the void. It would be closed when then next OS shipped with a “please recheck”, or they’d ask for a sample project without reading the report.

Yes, I know they release multiple minor point releases throughout the year but that seems to be more focused on just shipping, almost, everything promised in WWDC/iPhone Launch than fixing bugs or improving existing apps. In “recent” (10+) years, Apple seems to find it acceptable to abandon the attention to detail that first attracted me to their platforms. ↩︎
Yes, I know I can tap on the “Directions” to open their location in Apple Maps which then will show the distance. That’s what I do every time, but why? They clearly can show on the main page, why only show it for 5 seconds? ↩︎

perché? come riporta il anche il CNR quella dell'estinzione dei dinosauri è "una teoria ampiamente accettata", non esiste quindi la sicurezza scientifica che sia stato il meteorite a causare la scomparsa dei dinosauri.

Ha mai sentito parlare dello strato di iridio al limite del cretacico, scoperto a Gubbio e poi in tutto il mondo? Sa che è stato individuato il cratere di impatto del meteorite e sono state descritte le conseguenze dell'impatto? Il bello è che Piero Angela ci ha fatto ore di trasmissione.
siamo in due, ma resta il fatto che l'impatto del meteorite è certo e scientificamente dimostrato, mentre la estinzione dei dinosauri come conseguenza è una teoria.
@Ali_per_Viaggiare no sono entrambe teorie, con ampie prove a loro supporto. Fino a che non verranno formulate teorie più convincenti, supportate da prove ancora più solide, quella dell'impatto rimane la teoria accettata dalla comunità scientifica. Ricordo bene le resistenze per essere accettata una teoria che prevedeva estinzioni di massa, quando si era convinti che l'evoluzione avvenisse gradualmente. Ho iniziato geologia nell'86. Non tutti i docenti erano convinti. E lo dicevano.
bene, ma dato che sono teorie, e che piu volte le teorie accreditate sono state poi sconfessate da studi successivi, perche la stupisce il fatto che Angela sogni di avere la certezza dell'evento ?
@Ali_per_Viaggiare vedo che non capisce, nessuno le ha mai insegnato, come funziona il metodo scientifico. Esistono solo teorie. Anche se arrivasse un dinosauro viaggiatore nel tempo a raccontarci come è andata, rimarrebbe una teoria. Abbiamo una tale mole di dati che confermano la teoria dell'impatto che il livello di dubbio è pari a quello dell'origine antropica del riscaldamento globale. Eppure è corretto continuare a chiamarla teoria, anche se nessuno ha dubbi su come sia andata.
vedo che lei non capisce, chiuso nella sua presupponenza. nonostante chi ne sa piu di lei abbia cercato di spiegarglielo, e non sono io. Io ho già perso anche troppo tempo. E le auguro una buona serata.
