#DHS has requested more than 20,000 #NationalGuard members to help with the #Trump admin’s #immigration crackdown, according to two US officials with knowledge of the plans.
The request to the #Defense Dept came after Trump asked DHS last week to increase its ranks by pulling in 20,000 officers from state or federal agencies.
…It was not immediately clear if the #states would also have to approve the plan.
#NationalGuard #troops have generally played a supporting role to domestic authorities in enforcing #immigration issues at the #border, including logistics, security & other assistance. But the #Defense Dept ofcl said that if the request were approved, it would be the first time National Guard troops were used to help enforce an immigration crackdown inside the #US.
In the past 4 mos, the #Pentagon has sent thousands of active-duty #combat #troops & armored Stryker combat vehicles to the SW border to confront what Trump declared on his 1st day in office was an “invasion” of migrants, drug cartels & smugglers.
That’s not all. The military has also dispatched U-2 spy planes, #surveillance drones, helicopters & even 2 Navy #warships to surveil the borders & coasts round the clock.
The buildup of forces underscores how #Trump is breaking w/his predecessors’ practice of mostly limiting deployments along the #US - #Mexico border to small numbers of active-duty #soldiers & reservists. About 2,500 active-duty #troops were on the #border at the end of the #Biden admin. Now there are about 8,600.
