Leader delle nazioni aderenti a ECOWAS riuniti ad Abuja fra tensioni e nuove sfide.
Il 22 giugno 2025, la Comunità Economica degli Stati dell’Africa Occidentale (ECOWAS) si è riunita nella capitale della Nigeria, Abuja. I capi di Stato della regione si sono radunati per valutare lo stato attuale del blocco, che continua a confrontarsi con l’instabilità interna dopo una serie di colpi di stato militari avvenuti in diversi paesi membri.
Il Presidente della Commissione ECOWAS, Omar Alieu Touray, presenterà un aggiornamento sullo stato delle negoziazioni riguardanti il ritiro formale di Mali, Niger e Burkina Faso. Questo sviluppo potrebbe ridefinire il panorama politico ed economico dell’organizzazione.
Il summit si svolge mentre il Presidente nigeriano Bola Ahmed Tinubu si prepara a lasciare il suo incarico di presidente di ECOWAS, ruolo che ha assunto a Bissau nel 2023. Il mandato di Tinubu è stato caratterizzato da ambiziose dichiarazioni di intenti ma da risultati non proprio esaltanti. Sebbene abbia adottato una netta posizione contro i colpi di stato e abbia invocato un’integrazione regionale più profonda, i suoi sforzi non hanno raggiunto pienamente gli obiettivi prefissati. La sua spinta per un intervento militare contro la giunta del Niger non ha sortito effetto, e i suoi progetti più ampi per rivitalizzare il blocco restano in gran parte incompiuti.
In un ultimo gesto diplomatico, Tinubu ha convocato una riunione economica subregionale il giorno precedente, invitando Mali, Niger e Burkina Faso. Tuttavia, queste tre nazioni guidate da giunte militari hanno rifiutato di partecipare, sottolineando il fossato sempre più profondo tra di esse e l’organizzazione.
Dal summit dovrà emergere il successore di Tinubu come presidente di ECOWAS. I principali contendenti includono il Presidente senegalese Bassirou Diomaye Faye e l’ex Presidente ghanese John Dramani Mahama. Una tradizione di lunga data, sebbene non ufficiale, di rotazione della leadership tra paesi anglofoni, francofoni e lusofoni avrà il suo peso nella scelta finale.
Chiunque assuma la guida si troverà a gestire un’organizzazione in difficoltà, in un momento cruciale. Oltre a necessarie riforme interne, il nuovo leader dovrà affrontare relazioni tese con le nazioni saheliane in rottura e tentare di riportarle all’interno dell’alleanza; in tal senso le difficoltà non mancano, anche a causa degli attriti con gli stati confinanti.

The same pattern shows up all over the place, where a short-term fix makes the problem worse in the long run. This pattern is an example of a 'system archetype', and we can draw it as a diagram. Different instances of this archetype will give diagrams with different words - but the archetype is the pattern of edges with plus signs, minus signs and delays.
I've been working on the math of this stuff. I'm fascinated by how a general problem that haunts my life - I like to put off solving problems, and wind up making them worse - can be summarized as a simple diagram.

Here's another system archetype. There are two ways to solve a problem: a fundamental solution that takes a while to have any effect, and a quicker symptomatic solution... which unfortunately has a side-effect that makes the problem worse!

[H]ere is the sinkhole at the heart of the entire response to Israel over the past year and a half – a vacant centre. Trump is Trump. No one is expecting him to have a coherent, brave and stabilising response to Israel. But the problem predates him: a political establishment of ostensibly liberal, reliable custodians of stability that has no moral compass, and no care for the norms it constantly claims to uphold. Under its watch, international and human rights law has been violated again and again in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria and now Iran. Its answer has been to get out of Israel’s way at best, and arm it and provide it with diplomatic cover at worst. Joe Biden’s administration set the tone, and European governments followed. Collectively, they have clung on to a status quo of unconditional support for Israel and, in doing so, shattered the legal and moral conventions that imbued them with any measure of integrity or authority.[...] Their mandate is indeed to stabilise, but only in the sense of locking in a world order of failing assumptions and hierarchies. It is not to make the world a better place, but to cast a veneer of credibility over why it is necessary that we live in this worse one.
This default position is so naked in its hypocrisy, so ignorant and parochial in its worldview, so clear in its disregard for human life, that it represents a colossal erosion of sophistication in political discourse, and a new low in contempt for the public. Support for Israel can only be defended by facile, logic-defying references to its right to defend itself even when it is the aggressor, and Iran’s “threat to the free world”. Forgive me, but is that the same free world that backed unilateral attacks on four Middle East territories by Israel, a country whose leader is wanted by the international criminal court? At this point, the biggest threat to the free world is itself, which will sacrifice everything to ensure that not a single challenge to its power is allowed to pass.
