A look at the state of #WebAssembly, as it turns 10. It’s getting traction in some areas (though notably game engines aren’t one of them), though a pain point is its low-level model and lack of any standard implementation of structured types or garbage collection making interfacing with dynamic languages, or indeed the web DOM, a pain. As with Java, though, the web may not be where it ends up.
I think the name has caused confusion and held it back.
I know I reflexively ignored and skipped over any mention of #WebAssembly until I realized very recently that it:
1) Is general purpose and not actually a "web" thing.
&
2) Isn't yet another name for #JavaScript.

Parental controls on children’s devices make more harm than what they are trying to prevent.
They are usually a red flag for parents who don’t spend enough time engaging with their kids while they consume digital content, and instead just want to make sure that their kids won’t be exposed to crap while left unattended with a tablet for 2-3 hours.
They remove the need for a bidirectional discussion between parents and kids about what content is appropriate and what not, thus impairing their children’s critical abilities to do the right thing when they are on a non-restricted device.
They put the children out of the loop in parenting decisions and delegate parenting decisions to an algorithm instead, fostering a sense of grudge and perceived injustice.
And they come with the risks that you have every time you forbid something without the person on the other side understanding why - your children will feel even more thrilled when they break the rules.
Digital devices aren’t necessarily bad for kids. They can indeed be very valuable instruments for learning about the world. Every kid in the world should have an ebook reader. Just make sure that you sit next to them and you guide them when they use them.
And gradually give them more trust as they grow up. A kid who has the trust of their parents is much more likely to do the right thing than one who is given arbitrarily rules enforced by an algorithm by an absent parent.

Unknown parent • • •I realize that in this, the Century of the Kakistocracy, it is unlikely to pass legislation that helps actual people,but it should be absolutely illegal for business entities to buy single family residential properties. I’m not talking about like trusts, or even estates buying a singular or even adjoining property, but investment companies should not be allowed to make basic necessities like housing, an investment vehicle by owning enough property that they shift market values. We are in such an absurd bubble because vacant properties are being kept off the market specifically so as to raise prices. This leads to property taxes forcing long term owners to sell, with their houses being snapped up and kept off the market, further exacerbating the problem.
Vulture capital should be outlawed.
