The public horticulture in Pogradec, #Albania is reminiscent of what we used to have in the US (at least in California). Dedicated public horticulture staff that is paid to propagate, plant, and maintain plants in city parks and "hell strips". I ran across this municipal greenhouse today.

Siamo i maggiori consumatori di integratori in Europa – secondo i dati più recenti quasi trenta milioni di italiani adulti li hanno utilizzati almeno una volta nell’ultimo anno – e in estate ne assumiamo spesso per tenerci su o risolvere vari disturbi. Ma servono veramente? Ne abbiamo parlato spesso, per esempio in questo articolo “Verità e illusioni degli integratori alimentari. Troppe bugie e troppi consumi” che riportava il parere dell’ l’Istituto federale tedesco per la valutazione del rischio (BfR) ma ora abbiamo deciso di chiedere un parere al farmacologo Silvio Garattini, fondatore dell’Istituto Mario Negri di Milano, da sempre in prima linea nella battaglia per una medicina scientifica e non asservita all’industria.
L’efficacia
“Non ci sono studi che confermino l’efficacia di questi prodotti, in termini di qualità di vita o di miglioramento del benessere“, esordisce il farmacologo, “ci piace pensare di poter risolvere tutto con una pillola, ma l’organismo umano è un sistema complesso, è ridicolo pensare che un integratore possa sostituire uno stile di vita sano”.
Una distorsione di cui, secondo Garattini la pubblicità è la massima responsabile: “Ho vissuto durante il fascismo, soffrendo per la mancanza di libertà di espressione, e in qualche modo mi sembra di trovarmi in una situazione simile”, denuncia il farmacologo, “La mancanza di informazioni corrette influenza un po’ tutto, anche la stampa che spesso ha difficoltà ad affrontare certi temi per paura di perdere pubblicità”.
Stiamo parlando di integratori, costosi – nel 2023 il fatturato del settore ha superato i 4,5 miliardi di euro – e inutili. Ma anche di altri temi, “come il legame tra alcol e cancro, confermato dalla ricerca, che molti negano perché produciamo vino”, ricorda Garattini. “O i sacchetti a base di nicotina da succhiare” (sono le nicotine pouches di cui abbiamo parlato in vari articoli “che sono venduti liberamente in tabaccheria nonostante siano fatti in modo da essere attrattivi per i bambini e contengano un principio attivo che provoca velocemente dipendenza, più di sostanze come la cannabis”.
