What if every week we asked everyone in the US a simple question, like "What do you think of democracy? Do you think it is a good thing?" These conversations need to be happening. The cultural norm of not talking about politics could almost be calculated to create uninformed voters.

I used the thirty minutes I set aside for exercise to run down the hill to the Humboldt Botanical Gardens again. Today's run up the hill will satisfy the last of my cardio commitment for this week. It is easier walking back down the hill so I found myself enjoying all of the little things that make being outside worth the effort. A very tiny alligator lizard winding from one spot of shade to another. Bees making bee noises. A surprisingly gentle breeze making my downhill trek just cool enough to feel heavenly. "detached from reality" is fine in English. A language in which people often complain about the tendency in Germanic languages to agglomerate several words that stay separate in English into one giant monster word. I think both are objectivley equal but secretly think the agglomeration is more fun.
What I don't understand is why 19 firefighters just did there and let a handful of ICE guys interrupt their work and kidnap their co-workers. They were in the wilderness, nobody else around. Time for some cowboy diplomacy. Who would believe ICE if they said they'd been assaulted?

Like many others, I've built delay / echo #pedals / circuits using the ubiquitous #PT2399 digital delay IC. They're dirt cheap and simple to use. But the lowest delay period you can use them for is too long for some things, like #flanger / #phaser effects, or even some types of #chorus effects.
But I haven't seen much discussion of alternatives. I've been playing around with one I've built using the #M65831 digital #delay chip. It's not quite as cheap as the PT2399, but you don't have to look very hard to be able to get them for a couple of bucks (Canadian). But it seems to be so much better in this application.
First, it's designed and documented so that you can use a crystal to set its clock OR drive it directly with a CMOS-type square wave. No fiddling with drain currents and on-reset latchup problems.
Secondly, it sounds (to my ear) far better than the PT2399. The #datasheets I have for the PT2399 don't state a sampling rate; the M65831 uses 500 ksamples/s for lower delay times.
Thirdly, the range of delay available is larger. The shortest documented for PT2399 is ~31ms. For the M65831, it's 12.3ms using the default clock of 2 MHz. But the one sample I've tried is happy to run at 6 #MHz, for a delay of ~4ms. That's short enough for #flanging!

The real gem of this build though is the floppy disk drive, which looks unaltered on the surface. But its core functionality has been removed and in its place an Arduino sits, looking for NFC devices. The floppy disks similarly had NFC tags installed so that when they interact with the Arduino,it can send a command to the computer to launch a corresponding game. To the user it looks as though the game loads from a floppy disk, much like it would have in the 90s albeit with much more speed and much less noise.

I was thinking today that I have been responsible for more than just myself my whole life. As a kid my mother expected me to watch out for my younger sister who was born with Down syndrome. I was a teen mom. After my kids were grown there was a husband and grandkids to help raise. Now I am caregiver to my husband and dog mom to Summer. I don't know any other way. Today when Summer sat down and wouldn't stand up I felt really helpless. She is too heavy for me to carry comfortably for her. She can't talk to tell me what's wrong. She just looks at me like I will know what to do. I did my best and although it took awhile and a trip to the vet she feels better. This evening while we watched a spectacular sunset get better and better I held her close and said I was sorry she had a rotten difficult day. She snuggled up like not feeling good is just old news. #Sunset
