The responses to this post are why I really like posting here. Every single reply is from someone who has actually thought about the point I made and most of them have made me think.
Posting something like that on LinkedIn, for example, would get either silence, a bunch of low-effort ‘you’re so right!’ (subtext: Please validate me now!) posts, or responses from reply guys. Oh, and people telling me that their favourite LLM fixes all of the problems that they don’t understand.
The computing industry is weird about history. People fail to understand it in two opposite ways:A lot of things just fail to pay attention to the fact that other people have seen and solved the same problem before. You get people not just reinventing the wheel, but ignoring the huge design space of wheels that’s been explored and deciding that cubes are ideal shapes for wheels and concrete the ideal building material. See pretty much every recent GUI for hundreds of examples.
But at the other extreme you get a weird worship of the past. Smart people in the past did something this way, therefore we must do things that way! The fact that their target audience was PhD students and their constraints included a processor that was barely faster than a pen and paper and had 128 KiB of RAM is irrelevant. Early UNIX did glob expansion in the shell not because that’s more sensible than providing a glob and option parsing API in the standard library, but because they didn’t have enough disk space or RAM to duplicate code and they didn’t have shared libraries. If you have shared libraries, the right choice is very different. Similarly, ‘everything is a text stream’ is a good idea when you have a computer that you connect to via a serial terminal because everything that the user produces or consumes is a text stream. When you have a system that has graphical displays, speakers, cameras, microphones, and network connections, it is much less sensible.

Versions of the bill have been struck down three times already, but the current EU leadership is committed to trying for a fourth time thanks to lobbying from some questionable sources.
If passed, the legislation would mandate the adoption of "AI" client-side-scanning systems to scan text and media for offensive content even in the context of services using end-to-end encryption.
Put simply, AI does not work reliably enough to avoid falsely reporting random people for criminal behaviour, and even if it did there are insufficient safeguards to ensure it would not be abused to spy on protestors and political opponents.
I wrote an article about this more than three years ago in my former role as the lead of the CryptPad project, and the legislation remains largely the same since then. I recommend reading that for some good reasons to oppose this effort:

Chuis franchement mal à l'aise face à cette take. C'est aujourd'hui reconnu que le bruit est une forme de pollution qui impacte la santé. Qu'il engendre du stress et qu'il exclut les personnes neuroatypiques (personnes autistes, TDAH) qui sont en général extrêmement sensibles au bruit. Je crois pas que la célébration du bruit soit une grande idée…

On sait qu'il y a une corrélation entre occupation physique de l'espace public, l'occupation sonore et l'espace public et le genre. Par exemple les personnes qui mettent leur musique sur haut-parleur dans les transports publics, c'est quasi-systématiquement des mecs ?
Et pour répondre à la question de pourquoi les gens appellent les flics au lieu d'aller demander gentiment de baisser le son c'est parce que t'as 1 chance sur 2 de te faire envoyer chier voire te faire agresser.

Tout le monde aime le calme. Après y'a celleux qui peuvent se l'offrir, aka une maison avec 1000m2 de jardin pour un foyer, et les autres, aka 3 immeubles de 20 apparts chacun sur 1000m3
@vieveca Ah mais c'est une question extrêmement politique. Mais précisément ça mérite mieux que les take nulles de cette vidéo comme postuler que vivre dans le bruit, c'est naturel. En réalité, pendant l'immense majorité de son existence, l'immense majorité de la population humaine a vécu dans des niveaux de bruit extrêmement faibles.
Tout comme poser comme principe parfaitement inquestionnable le droit de faire du bruit en paix jusqu'à 22h comme le fait Léo en moitié de vidéo… 🙄
En vrai, les villes sont pas si bruyantes. Bien sûr, les endroits où il y a de l’activité (bars, restaus, commerces, boîtes de nuit…) le sont un peu plus, mais une ville peut être plutôt silencieuse en étant assez dense.
La source principale de bruit en ville… ce sont les voitures.
@breizh @vieveca Les villes, c'est l'exemple qui est donné dans l'article au début de la vidéo. L'a personne qui l'écrit explique avoir grandi avec les bruits de la ville (klaxon, boom bass, gens qui parlent fort) et avoir été gênée par le silence de l'université de l'ivy league.
Mais en vrai, ouais la campagne c'est bruyant aussi. Y'a des machines agricoles, des animaux domestiques et sauvages… Moi j'ai grandi avec les poules et les chevaux
