Nouveau driver gets a long-awaited fix!
A recent code patch has been pushed to the Linux 6.17 kernel that targets the Nouveau driver for NVIDIA graphics cards. Computers that utilize the NVIDIA graphics cards will benefit from this long-awaited fix that improves your experience when it comes to gaming and other graphics-heavy operations, such as 3D modeling!
Apparently, a bug in the Nouveau driver related to fencing has been plaguing users for ages, since the context would randomly wedge causing your X server to lock up. If it doesn’t lock up, your application or your game will at least shut down with a timeout message in the kernel dmesg output.
As described in the groupwork report, unrelated debugging work in the Blackwell architecture done this week led to a reliable reproducer for this bug, which is finally fixed. You can see the final fix here.
As Linux 6.17 releases, the fix should be backported to all supported Linux versions, and all distributions, depending on the package update policy, will get this fix for users running their Linux system with an NVIDIA graphics card powered by the Nouveau driver.

Nouveau has code that when it gets an IRQ with no allowed handler it disables it to avoid storms.However with nonstall interrupts, we often disable them from the drm driver, but still request their emission via the push submission.Just don't disable nonstall irqs ever in normal operation, the event handling code will filter them out, and the driver will just enable/disable them at load time.This fixes timeouts we've been seeing on/off for a long time, but they became a lot more noticable on Blackwell.This doesn't fix all of them, there is a subsequent fence emission fix to fix the last few.

Probably not going to make the news but this week is actually pretty big for nouveau users. @airlied and I finally tracked down a fencing bug that's been plaguing nouveau users for a while.Sometimes the context will randomly wedge, resulting in a timeout message in dmesg and your app suddenly freezing and getting killed. When this happens to your compositor or X server, you lose your session. We've seen a number of bug reports about things like this over the course of the last year or so but until this week weren't able to track it down.
Thanks to a bit of unrelated Blackwell debugging I was doing this week, I finally figured out how to reliably reproduce it and Dave was able to hunt it down in the nouveau code. The final fix was a group effort:

The fix has been merged to drm-misc-fixes and will be backported to the stable Linux kernel branches. Users should get that fix soon through their regular distro update cycle.
Hopefully, this will significantly improve the overall robustness of the nouveau stack and relieve some of the annoyance users have been experiencing.

"The solution to the confusion between AI and identity is not to abandon conversational interfaces entirely. They make the technology far more accessible to those who would otherwise be excluded. The key is to find a balance: keeping interfaces intuitive while making their true nature clear.
And we must be mindful of who is building the interface. When your shower runs cold, you look at the plumbing behind the wall. Similarly, when AI generates harmful content, we shouldn't blame the chatbot, as if it can answer for itself, but examine both the corporate infrastructure that built it and the user who prompted it.
As a society, we need to broadly recognize LLMs as intellectual engines without drivers, which unlocks their true potential as digital tools. When you stop seeing an LLM as a "person" that does work for you and start viewing it as a tool that enhances your own ideas, you can craft prompts to direct the engine's processing power, iterate to amplify its ability to make useful connections, and explore multiple perspectives in different chat sessions rather than accepting one fictional narrator's view as authoritative. You are providing direction to a connection machine—not consulting an oracle with its own agenda.
We stand at a peculiar moment in history. We've built intellectual engines of extraordinary capability, but in our rush to make them accessible, we've wrapped them in the fiction of personhood, creating a new kind of technological risk: not that AI will become conscious and turn against us but that we'll treat unconscious systems as if they were people, surrendering our judgment to voices that emanate from a roll of loaded dice."

Un chiffre en pleine explosion : +30 % depuis 2022. Pire, 31 enfants sont morts cette année dans les rues de la sixième puissance mondiale. Ça nous a rappelé les visages de Sofia et de ses trois enfants, Inès, Naël et Amir…

– C’est pas pour moi, c’est pour mes enfants ! Demain ils ont école tous les trois. Il fait deux degrés…

– Même pas des couvertures ? »
C’est ma rentrée, ce jeudi matin. Je me sers un grand café pour me réveiller, mais le retour à l’actualité va être plus efficace que le café. Je vois passer le rapport de l’Unicef, je me frotte les yeux pour relire le titre : « 2159 enfants ont passé la nuit à la rue avant la rentrée scolaire. » Je repense à Sofia, à la rue avec ses trois enfants hauts comme trois pommes, Inès, Naël et Amir, que j’avais rencontrés l’hiver dernier.
Je me demande aussi : comment c’est possible ? Dans un pays aussi riche ? Dans un pays où 500 personnes ont engrangé 557 milliards d’euros supplémentaires en seulement sept ans ? Mettre à l’abri ces 2000 gamins, ça coûterait si cher que ça ? C’était une promesse, une de plus, du gouvernement, en 2022 : atteindre l’objectif de « zéro enfant à la rue ». On se rappelle aussi de la déclaration d’Emmanuel Macron, un soir de juillet 2017 : « Je ne veux plus, d’ici la fin de l’année, avoir des femmes et des hommes dans les rues. » Huit ans plus tard, ils sont plus de 300 000 à y dormir, dans notre pays…
Y mettre fin ? « Les politiques ne veulent pas. »
« La situation sur le front de l’accès à l’hébergement est chaque jour plus dramatique, les pouvoirs publics doivent réagir mais malgré le dépôt de nos recours, rien ne change », déplore Manuel Domergue, directeur des études de la Fondation pour le Logement. « Au contraire, les dernières remontées de terrain et les annonces budgétaires pour 2026 nous font craindre le pire. » Adeline Hazan, présidente de l’Unicef France, à l’origine de ce rapport choc, ne dit pas autre chose : « Chaque année, nous constatons avec indignation qu’un nombre croissant d’enfants dorment dans la rue, exposés à des conditions de vie indignes et à des dangers quotidiens. » l’Unicef le répète, le martèle : « Malgré les promesses répétées des gouvernements successifs, la situation s’aggrave année après année. Ces chiffres marquent en effet une augmentation du nombre d’enfants sans solution de 6% par rapport à 2024 et de 30% depuis 2022. Face à la saturation chronique des dispositifs d’hébergement d’urgence, même les personnes les plus vulnérables – femmes enceintes ou accompagnées d’enfants en bas âge – se retrouvent de plus en plus fréquemment sans solution. » Adeline Hazan : « Pourtant, nos organisations formulent des recommandations claires et proposent des solutions concrètes, efficaces et réalistes. Ce qui fait cruellement défaut aujourd’hui, ce ne sont ni les ressources, ni l’expertise mais bien une volonté politique ferme de mettre fin à l’inacceptable. »
Une volonté politique ? En augmentant, par exemple, le nombre de places d’hébergement d’urgence, notamment des places adaptées aux besoins des enfants et des familles, ou de lancer enfin un plan ambitieux de production de logements sociaux et très sociaux ? Mais la couleur du budget annoncé par François Bayrou au milieu de l’été va dans le sens inverse : des coupes de crédits toujours plus grandes sur les plus fragiles, pour continuer envers et contre tout ses cadeaux aux plus riches, peu importe s’ils grèvent les recettes et font exploser la dette.
La République abandonne ses enfants à la rue ? Peu importe, tant que les dividendes continuent à pleuvoir.
Et tant pis si, comme on le soulignait dans ces colonnes, en 2024, 855 personnes sont mortes à la rue. Parmi elles, 31 enfants. Mais certains s’étonnent ou s’indignent, même, encore, des appels à manifester le 10 septembre…

Und aus eigener Erfahrung weiß ich, dass das körperlich anstrengend ist, weshalb es weitestgehend nur Jüngere leisten können. Folglich bleibt uns wohl nix anderes übrig als die Wehrpflicht. Zumindest, wenn wir unsere demokratische, freiheitliche, rechtsstaatliche Gesellschaft verteidigen wollen.
