ISC has been proudly using FreeBSD in production for a long time, including to serve critical internet infrastructure with a global user base (including you!), from the DEC Alpha days up till now, mostly on bare-metal.
In this talk I'll go over some of how we (and I) got here, how we've managed far-away installs and upgrades without remote hands during a global pandemic, and how we believe that in a Linux-centric world, BSD gives us an advantage, not only in diversity, but from the community, and touch on how a single FreeBSD box has replaced an install that used to consist of separate routers and switches.
We'll cover some of our MacGyver moments, share some head-scratchers, and even cover some of the things we'd love to see in the future, both from the community as well as where we're hoping to go.
If the conference leaders think it wise, this talk could also include a light touch on how BGP and Anycast work, both in general, as well as how the global routing table is affected by the less-and-more specific routes to F that we announce to keep local traffic local, and how ISC works with its CDN partner. (These are not BSD-specific topics, but the maturity of reasonable routing daemons in ports have meant that we can now do this without needing an upstream router).

I have a crazy idea that I can 3D print a D-sub connector. Specifically, the unobtainable 23-pin variety found on the Amiga. So I bought someone else’s DigiKey leftovers to give it a shot.
Surprisingly and helpfully, the printed engineering drawing was included. (Unhelpfully, it is in inches)
These are crimp contacts even though for the Spite Sprite they’ll be soldered directly to the board. TE actually does make push-in solder cup contacts, but they’re very hard to find these days.

Building a Halloween Vending Computer That Talks
Our hacker from [Appalachian Forge Works] wrote in to let us know about their vending machine build: a Halloween vending computer that talks.
He starts by demonstrating the vending process: a backlit vend button is pressed, an animation plays on the screen as a synthetic voice speaks through attached speakers, the vending mechanism rotates until a successful vend is detected with a photoelectric sensor (a photoresistor and an LED) or a timeout of 10 seconds is reached (the timeout is particularly important for cases when the stock of prizes is fully depleted).
For a successful vend the prize will roll out a vending tube and through some ramps, visible via a perspex side panel, into the receptacle, as the spooky voice announces the vend. It’s the photoelectric sensor which triggers the mask to speak.
The vending mechanism is a wheel that spins, the bouncy balls caught in a hole on the wheel, then fall through a vending tube. The cache of prizes are stored in a clear container attached to the top, which is secured with a keyed lock attached to the 3D printed lid. After unlocking the lid can be removed for restocking.
The whole device is built into an old PC case tower. The back panels have been replaced and sealed. The computer in the box is an ASUS CN60 Chromebox running Ubuntu Linux. The power button is obscured on the back of the case to avoid accidental pressing. The monitor is bolted on to the side panel with a perspex screen and connected to the Chromebox via VGA. Inside there are two power supplies, an Arduino Uno microcontroller, and an audio amplifier attached to a pair of speakers.
A 12V DC motor controls the vending prize wheel which feeds a prize into the vending tube. The vending tube has an LED on one side and a photoresistor on the other side that detects the vend. The software, running on Linux, is Python code using the Pygame library.

Distributed Denial of Secrets Ehud Barak emails Leak Archive.
After his first arrest for sex crimes, Jeffrey Epstein tried to get into a new line of work: surveillance. In 2015, he partnered with former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak to invest in a security tech startup called Reporty Homeland Security, now known as Carbyne. Leaked emails show that Epstein was using Barak to seek out opportunities in the surveillance industry and build connections with powerful figures around the globe, including American businessman Peter Thiel, the former director of Israeli signals intelligence, and two people in Russian President Vladimir Putin's circle.After he was first caught sexually exploiting teenage girls, Epstein had pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution in 2008; he served a little over a year in detention. Meanwhile, he invested his wealth in bizarre projects, including a ranch to breed women with his DNA and "efforts to identify a mysterious particle that might trigger the feeling that someone is watching you," according to The New York Times.
The leaked emails show that Epstein was also interested in more mundane means of spying on and manipulating people, which overlapped with the technologies governments often pursue. This interest crossed borders.
Barak's email inbox was quietly posted by Distributed Denial of Secrets, a website widely considered to be a successor to WikiLeaks, on a file-sharing platform for verified journalists and researchers in May 2025. The contents came from Handala, a hacker group named for a Palestinian cartoon character that has been leaking files taken from senior Israeli officials for several months.
Although the emails were posted without technical metadata or cryptographic signatures that would allow their authenticity to be verified, they include dozens of images, videos, voice recordings, and scanned documents from Barak and his friends and family that have never been published elsewhere. And they include information that was not publicly known at the time of the email leaks, including a reference to Epstein's birthday book.
The emails below, which have not been published elsewhere, paint a picture of Epstein as a man very eager to be at the nexus between private money and public surveillance. While they were hammering out the Reporty investment, Epstein invited Barak to come to a meeting with Thiel, cofounder of PayPal and the surveillance contractor Palantir, in May 2014. Although Barak couldn't make that meeting, Epstein insisted that Barak "spend real time with peter thiel [sic]" and offered to set up a dinner the following month.
