“We took the photograph while we were en route from northern #Chile to Santiago, travelling to attend the first workshop on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for the Chilean astronomical community at ESO-Vitacura. Little did we know that this journey would present us with a once-in-a-lifetime observational opportunity!
The flight was delayed, and as the plane ascended, the timing coincided perfectly with sunset. By pure coincidence, the window seat in our row was unoccupied, providing us an unobstructed view of the breathtaking landscape below. It was then that we noticed a faint but unmistakable glow in the sky: Comet C/2024 G3 Atlas!
Eager to share this spectacle, we informed the flight attendants, who promptly passed on the news to the pilots. They were as enthusiastic as us, and they made an announcement to the passengers, describing the rare sight visible outside the plane. The pilots dimmed the cabin lights and even turned off the wing lights to enhance visibility, allowing everyone onboard to experience the comet in its full glory.
The cabin was filled with awe as passengers took pictures of the comet. This moment was a testament to how celestial events can bring people together, even at 30,000 feet!”

La protezione dei dati è una difesa strategica non solo contro un loro uso non autorizzato, ma contro la loro corruzione e il furto di informazioni digitali: al contempo se una buona strategia mira a conservare l’integrità, la disponibilità e la riservatezza delle informazioni sensibili, anche tramite l’utilizzo di tecnologie e metodi per migliorare la sicurezza, rafforzare la cultura della sicurezza e della tutela della privacy, diventa necessario per “migliorare la competitività del sistema Paese“.
Gabriele Faggioli, presidente onorario di Clusit, in occasione della Giornata Europea per la Protezione dei Dati che si celebra domani, 28 gennaio, afferma: “Proteggere i dati personali oggi non significa soltanto rispettare le normative, che deve essere dato per scontato, ma vuol dire invece comprendere quali siano i rischi per i cittadini e per gli ordinamenti democratici che possono derivare dai comportamenti individuali, dalle potenzialità della innovazione tecnologica e dagli utilizzi criminosi a cui siamo esposti. Occorre poi studiare e prevenire gli impatti sulla stabilità delle istituzioni che possono discendere da strategie politiche interne ed esterne all’Italia”
Proteggere I dati, infine, è anche questione di guardiani esperti e vigili, che comprendono l’importanza di cosa è archiviato e in che modo, effettuando il controllo della loro sicurezza, identificando le vulnerabilità, operando misure efficaci contro accessi non autorizzati e garantendo conformità, disponibilità, integrità e riservatezza.
Protezione dei dati tra nuove tecnologie e sfide etiche
Se il 2024 si è configurato come un anno importante per la privacy, soprattutto a livello normativo (Data Act e Digital Services Act) e il l’Artificial Intelligence Act dell’UE vorrebbe dare forma al futuro digitale europeo, lo scenario globale richiede una risposta decisa. Secondo il Rapporto Clusit 2024 “l’andamento del cyber crimine nell’ultimo quinquennio ha mostrato una crescita complessiva del 79%. Nello specifico, in Italia, nel primo semestre dello scorso anno, è andato a segno il 7,6% degli attacchi mondiali. “Phishing e Social Engineering, che sfruttano la vulnerabilità del fattore umano, continuano a costituire una minaccia sostanziale” e le violazioni dei dati rimangono una preoccupazione significativa per individui e organizzazioni in tutto il mondo, con anche piccoli difetti software che presentano potenziali vulnerabilità
In particolare – sul fronte della privacy – preoccupa il settore sanitario del nostro Paese, in cui “gli incidenti rilevati nel primo semestre 2024 sono cresciuti dell’83%, confermando l’aumento dell’attenzione da parte dei cybercriminali per i dati sanitari, che si stima valgano oggi nel dark web oltre 30 volte il valore delle informazioni sulle carte di credito”

2025: anno di sfide contro attacchi di ultima generazione
Il 2025 sempre secondo Clusit si prefigura come un anno di sfide in ambito cyber security, laddove “all’inefficacia delle strategie e delle tecniche di difesa fino ad ora messe in campo, si contrappongono schiere di attaccanti che fanno sempre più ricorso a tecnologie di ultima generazione per colpire con attacchi di phishing altamente personalizzati e ransomware capaci di mettere fuori uso intere catene di approvvigionamento delle organizzazioni”. I progressi tecnologici e l’interconnessione hanno contribuito a trasformare profondamente le minacce digitali: per fare un esempio l’intelligenza artificiale è sfruttata per ideare attacchi sofisticati volti a eludere i protocolli di sicurezza, mentre al pari della proliferazione delle reti 5G nascono preoccupazioni per la sicurezza nella rete IoT e la potenziale compromissione dei dati sensibili, con la conseguente necessità di soluzioni hardware e software più robusti per ridurre il rischio di violazioni dei dati e attacchi alla rete.
Nel panorama contemporaneo diventa necessario “Investire nella protezione dei dati personali attraverso l’adeguamento alla normativa e, soprattutto, rafforzando la cultura della sicurezza e della tutela della privacy a tutti i livelli tramite adeguata formazione, stimolando il pensiero critico fin dalle scuole elementari e cercando come Paese di essere protagonisti del mercato digitale, è oggi fondamentale per la sopravvivenza della società digitale, per l’avvenire delle giovani generazioni e per la competitività del sistema Paese”, conclude Faggioli.

Genuinely think this is a great move forward, & the more companies that do it (& do it properly, not 4 really long days, but reduced hours, same pay) the more likely we are to move that way & IMO more free time is a huge boost to health & happiness.

But as a counterpoint, I was also excited when remote work started to gain popularity over the past few years, only to now see it decline.
Truly, the lesson has increasingly been not to take anything for granted. Someone has to actually bend that arc.
